(ESP-ENG) Heretic | Faith is not questioned - Movie Review!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Is your faith unshakable, how sure are you of everything you believe in? - These are some of the questions that one as a spectator asks oneself while watching this film and logically they are the same ones that throughout the film invite the pure and hard questioning of our two protagonists to the point of making them slightly doubt. Heretic is a production inclined to suspense and psychological thriller led by an extraordinary Hugh Grant, a guy with some strange motivations that through a wild and incisive questioning seeks to break all the bases of belief of these two sisters in faith that appear at the door of their house.
Sisters Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Paxton (Chloe East) are two Mormon missionaries who go from house to house spreading the word of their religion and seeking to convert as many people as their ability to do so and their faith will allow. Being the way they are, Mormons are quite particular when it comes to dress and behavior, they receive a lot of rejection but that doesn't stop them since their beliefs go far beyond. This all changes when they arrive at a remote house and knock on the door. Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant) receives them and in a very calm and kind tone decides to listen to them. What they do not know is that this will be the beginning of a nightmare.
They enter the house a little deceived and from that moment on, a very great tension begins to be perceived, a very heavy and strange atmosphere that little by little begins to turn on the alarms of these two young women. From here the vibe changes to start a kind of “game” which is none other than to test everything they believe through refutations and “demonstrations” that all religions are the same and that they are nothing more than instruments of social control. This is what the film is about, how these two sisters in faith try to get ahead with an incredibly twisted man in front of them.
The level of distress and discomfort that this film can generate is high. And this happens for several reasons. The first is the staging, all very gloomy and mysterious; the second is the way everything was recorded, the shots and framing used are very good, they use a lot of close-ups that do is highlight the emotions in a more direct way, see the camera so close to the faces and realize all the facial expressions certainly makes everything more disturbing; and the third is the great acting of these three actors. Sophie Thatcher, who I have already said but she is an actress who is very good at these roles full of terror.
Another very interesting point is the script. All the dialogues and interactions that take place lead the viewer to real doubt. The objective of this Mr. Reed is that these missionaries see and understand that the border between belief and skepticism is a very thin line that can be crossed in a very simple way, everything will depend on the conviction and faith that they have. The arguments that this man gives may seem very real to the point that when you are watching the scenes you may start to think a little and reason what he is saying, the doubt is real friends. The issue here is the reason for all of this and the convincing power that it may or may not have. These missionaries may appear to be gentle, but I can tell you that they are not, sometimes they pay with the same coin.
I liked the film because it has no clichés, no jumpscare, those that are sometimes so necessary. Everything revolves around a dense environment full of extreme control where intelligence and insight are vital for survival. All three performances are spectacular, not for nothing Grant was nominated for several awards for this performance. I enjoyed it, I was expecting something more of the run of the mill but instead I ended up watching a film that makes you think while at the same time inflicting intrigue and tension.
I give it an 8/10. I think it's a very successful film that can surprise the viewer. The performances are top notch along with all the atmosphere created around the interpretations. I recommend it without any doubt. It lasts a little less than two hours. I leave the trailer here.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.

Saludos!!
