El género del terror en los últimos tiempos siento que ha tenido un resurgir importante, desde hace un par de años se ha visto que grandes títulos de películas han salido a la luz siendo muchos de ellos unos éxitos, obviamente no todos porque este tipo de cine es muy complicado de lograr y sobretodo de complacer. Pero si hay alguien, si existe una actriz que es de las que siempre va a llamar la atención y que sin dudas es de las mejores del terror es Mia Goth, una reina de este género. La última película que vi de ella fue Infinity Pool y como era de esperarse estuvo a la altura; en este nuevo film habría que decir lo mismo, con sus diferencias pero en términos generales estuvo muy completa.

But if there is someone, if there is an actress who is always going to draw attention and is undoubtedly one of the best in horror is Mia Goth, a queen of this genre. The last movie I saw of her was Infinity Pool and as expected she was at the height; in this new film we would have to say the same, with its differences but in general terms she was very complete.

Hay que recordar que este film forma parte de una trilogía de Ti West que llega a su final y que es producida por la A24 (X, Pearl, MaXXXine) la cual se ha caracterizado por ser un slasher si, pero con muchos tintes psicológicos. Esta película se trata de Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) quien es una estrella porno pero que tiene todas las intenciones del mundo de ser ahora una estrella de Hollywood. Para lograr eso ella tratará de hacer lo que sea necesario hasta llegar a donde ella se lo proponga. La cosa es que un día decide ir a una audición que puede que le cambie la vida ya que estamos hablando de la saga de películas más importantes de terror de la época. Que pasa? - pues que contra y viento y marea logra el papel principal y finalmente su oportunidad termina llegando.

What happens? - Well, against all odds she gets the lead role and finally her chance ends up coming.

Pero no todo es felicidad para ella porque dentro de ese mundo aparece un asesino serial a cambiarlo todo. Esta persona está yendo tras otras mujeres de la industria y tal parece que conoce todo el oscuro pasado de Maxine, porque si, ella no es nada inocente como aparenta ser. A partir de acá comienza una especie de cacería entre ella y este asesino que no ve el momento de ponerle las manos encima. Hace falta que hayan visto las anteriores películas para entender esta? - no, pero si pueden ver por lo menos "X" sería mejor. Y cuando digo que no hace falta es porque a lo largo del film este nos va dando flashbacks para entender un poco mejor el contexto de todo lo que está pasando.

This person is going after other women in the industry and it seems that he knows all of Maxine's dark past, because yes, she is not as innocent as she appears to be. From here begins a kind of hunt between her and this killer who can't wait to get his hands on her. Do you have to have seen the previous movies to understand this one? - No, but if you can see at least “X” it would be better. And when I say that it is not necessary is because throughout the film it gives us flashbacks to understand a little better the context of everything that is happening.

Hay varias cosas que me parecieron muy top y una de ellas es la ambientación, todo lo que tiene que ver con lo visual, pareciera que estuviéramos viendo una película de terror clásica de los 80, creo que ese aspecto lo clavaron, la estética es muy buena. Al estar ubicada en 1985 hay muchas referencias de aquel año y una de las que más me llamó la atención es haberse ayudado del "night stalker" para darle más profundidad a la trama. No se si ubican a aquel asesino serial que aterrorizó a la ciudad de Los Ángeles matando a decenas de mujeres. Pues bueno, como aquello estaba en su auge lo que hace es darle un toque más de thriller psicológico a todo haciendo que la historia sea un poco más oscura de lo que de por si ya es.

There are several things that I found very top and one of them is the setting, everything that has to do with the visual, it seems that we were watching a classic horror movie of the 80's, I think they nailed that aspect, the aesthetics is very good. Being set in 1985 there are many references to that year and one of the ones that caught my attention is to have helped the “night stalker” to give more depth to the plot. I don't know if you know that serial killer who terrorized the city of Los Angeles killing dozens of women. Well, as that was in its heyday what it does is to give a touch more of psychological thriller to everything making the story a little darker than it already is.

Otra cosa que vemos es el gore. Como ya les decía estas películas no destacan por ser especialmente gráficas, si tienen sus escenas en donde el slasher está presente, de hecho hay una en especifico que la recuerdo y me duele, pero pienso que no es lo que destaca. Las escenas más llamativas por lo general son aquellas en donde abunda la sangre pero que no terminan de ser muy explícitas. Esto no lo voy a ver como un fallo o una crítica pero si que es verdad que por lo menos a mi me gusta mucho este elemento en las películas de terror. Creo que si tuviera que darle una palabra para describir todo lo visto en este aspecto sería "clásico" y es que hasta en la construcción de ciertas escenas se van a lo más mainstream del cine y eso está bien, son guiños al género más original.

Another thing we see is the gore. As I was saying, these movies are not particularly graphic, they do have their scenes where the slasher is present, in fact there is one in particular that I remember and it hurts me, but I think it is not what stands out. The most striking scenes are usually those where blood abounds but they don't end up being very explicit. I'm not going to see this as a failure or a criticism but it is true that at least I like this element in horror movies. I think if I had to give a word to describe everything seen in this aspect would be “classic” and is that even in the construction of certain scenes go to the most mainstream cinema and that's fine, are winks to the most original genre.

El elenco es muy bueno, además de Mia Goth la cual es espectacular tenemos a Kevin Bacon, Lily Collins, Michelle Monaghan, Giancarlo Esposito, Sophie Thatcher, etc. Maxine es una mujer que sabe profundamente lo que quiere, sabe que tiene un pasado en sus espalda que tiene que mantener oculto y por tanto no le va a temblar el pulso para hacer lo necesario para llegar a donde quiere; en su personaje vemos una progresión de esa personalidad la cual como es obvio está afectada psicológicamente siendo este cierre el que tanto anhelaba. Sinceramente Mia Goth es de las actrices más sólidas del cine de terror y aunque este film no haya sido un 10 el trabajo sigue siendo muy bueno.

The cast is very good, besides Mia Goth, who is spectacular, we have Kevin Bacon, Lily Collins, Michelle Monaghan, Giancarlo Esposito, Sophie Thatcher, etc. Maxine is a woman who knows deeply what she wants, she knows she has a past behind her back that she has to keep hidden and therefore she will not tremble her pulse to do what is necessary to get where she wants; in her character we see a progression of that personality which is obviously affected psychologically being this closure the one she longed for. Sincerely Mia Goth is one of the most solid actresses in horror cinema and although this film was not a 10 the work is still very good.

Muy recomendable el film, quizás para mi se queda ligeramente corta pero eso no quita la calidad que tiene. 7/10. Al final es un buen thriller psicológico con sus pinceladas de gore y el típico slasher. Menos de dos horas dura. Les dejo el tráiler por acá.

Highly recommended the film, perhaps for me it falls slightly short but that does not detract from the quality it has. 7/10. In the end it is a good psychological thriller with touches of gore and the typical slasher. Less than two hours long. I leave the trailer here.
