El día domingo 2 de marzo se llevó a cabo otra ceremonia más de los Oscars, una que venía siendo muy comentada por diferentes temas que para mi se apartan de lo que es realmente importante, el cine. Es una realidad que pareciera que cada vez es menos la cantidad de personas que están pendiente de los premios pero creo que este año en especial esa tendencia cambió, siento que un poco más de gente si estuvo al tanto de lo que pasaba con las películas y con los nominados. Hoy vamos a hablar un poco acerca de eso precisamente, de algunas estatuillas entregadas y si al final fueron una sorpresa o no.

On Sunday, March 2, another Oscars ceremony took place, one that had been very commented on for different topics that for me are far from what is really important, the movies. It is a reality that it seems that less and less people are paying attention to the awards but I think this year especially that trend changed, I feel that a little more people were aware of what was going on with the films and the nominees. Today we are going to talk a little bit about that, about some of the statuettes awarded and if they were a surprise or not.

Empecemos por lo obvio, Anora se llevó los honores como mejor película. Desde que la vi estaba seguro que iba a pelear ese Oscar junto a The Brutalist pero al final fue el trabajo de Sean Baker quien arrasó. Ese film es espectacular, si no lo han visto hágase el favor y vaya a verlo (tiene una de las mejores escenas de comedia que he visto). Es un drama muy bien narrado e interpretado sobre la realidad de muchas personas. Esto nos lleva a par de premios más. Mejor director que se lo llevó Baker. Creo que estaba cantado que el estadounidense se llevaría el premio aunque Brady Corbet se había llevado el BAFTA y los Critics' Choice se lo llevó Jon M. Chu de Wicked. La realidad es que la temporada de premios y sus ganadores estuvo muy variada, ahí la expectativa que estaban generando los Oscars.

Let's start with the obvious, Anora took the honors for Best Picture. Since I saw it I was sure it was going to fight for that Oscar next to The Brutalist but in the end it was Sean Baker's work who swept the board. That film is spectacular, if you haven't seen it do yourself a favor and go see it (it has one of the best comedy scenes I've ever seen). It is a very well narrated and acted drama about the reality of many people. This brings us to a couple of other awards. Best Director, which went to Baker. I think it was a foregone conclusion that the American would take the award even though Brady Corbet had taken the BAFTA and the Critics' Choice went to Wicked's Jon M. Chu. The reality is that the awards season and its winners were very varied, hence the expectation that the Oscars were generating.

Pero hablemos de la mejor actriz. Mikey Madison es increíble, a partir de ahora las puertas que se le abrirán serán infinitas y es que lo hecho en Anora no fue fácil, aquellos que rebajen su trabajo al decir que solo bailó con poca ropa no entienden absolutamente nada. Pero yo si creo que este Oscar tenía que haber sido para Demi Moore. (Irónico que Demi vivió en la realidad lo que pasó en la película: le ganó la actriz más joven). En The Substance fue una actuación estelar, ya había ganado varios premios pero es lo dicho, siempre en los Oscars pasa algo que deja un poco descolocadas a las personas. No es que Madison no se lo mereciera pero Demi Moore se lo merecía más, es todo.

But let's talk about the best actress. Mikey Madison is incredible, from now on the doors that will open for her will be infinite, because what she did in Anora was not easy, those who demean her work by saying that she only danced with little clothes don't understand anything at all. But I do believe that this Oscar should have gone to Demi Moore (Ironic that Demi lived in reality what happened in the movie: she was beaten by the youngest actress). In The Substance it was a stellar performance, she had already won several awards but it's what I said, something always happens at the Oscars that throws people off a bit. Not that Madison didn't deserve it but Demi Moore deserved it more, that's all.

Mejor actriz de reparto y el mejor actor de reparto, Zoe Saldaña y Kieran Culkin respectivamente, estaban muy seguros de que serían los ganadores. Lo único bueno de Emilia Pérez fue Zoe y The Real Pain es una gran película en donde vimos a Kieran hacer un papel muy complicado. Otra cosa que me puso contento es que FLOW ganó película animada. La vi hace poco y le hice una reseña por acá y sinceramente es muy bonita película, que sin diálogos y con un presupuesto de apenas $3MM haya triunfado es algo muy cool. Mejor fotografía se la llevó The Brutalist y no puedo estar más de acuerdo. Los planos, los encuadres, la paleta de colores, todo eso junto es lo que hace que la fotografía destaque por lo que si, lo hecho por Lol Crawley es muy bueno.

Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor, Zoe Saldana and Kieran Culkin respectively, were pretty sure to be the winners. The only good thing about Emilia Perez was Zoe and The Real Pain is a great movie where we saw Kieran play a very complicated role. Another thing that made me happy is that FLOW won animated film. I saw it recently and reviewed it here and honestly it's a very nice film, that with no dialogue and a budget of only $3MM it won is very cool. Best Cinematography went to The Brutalist and I couldn't agree more. The shots, the framing, the color palette, all that together is what makes the cinematography stand out so yes, Lol Crawley's work is very good.

La gran perdedora de la noche fue Emilia Perez y agradecido estoy por eso. Solamente 2 Oscars. No se duda de Zoe pero si de la mejor canción, ganarle un Oscar a Elton John es atrevido. EP es una mala película por actuación, contexto, trasfondo y porque no supieron representar nada de lo que tanto "defendían", es un film ofensivo que nunca tuvo que haber tenido tantas nominaciones, 13 si no me equivoco. Quedará en la historia como de lo peor hecho alguna vez en el cine. Y es que hasta en la categoría de mejor película extranjera en donde era la "favorita" terminó perdiendo contra la brasileña I'm still here.

The big loser of the night was Emilia Perez and I am grateful for that. Only 2 Oscars. No doubt about Zoe but if the best song, winning an Oscar for Elton John is daring. EP is a bad film because of acting, context, background and because they didn't know how to represent anything of what they “defended” so much, it is an offensive film that should never have had so many nominations, 13 if I'm not mistaken. It will go down in history as one of the worst films ever made. Even in the category of best foreign film, where it was the “favorite”, it ended up losing against the Brazilian I'm still here.

Me gustó que Conclave se llevara por lo menos un Oscar, el de mejor guión adaptado; para los que no la han visto es otra que se las recomiendo mucho. Muy sobria, llena de intriga y con grandes interpretaciones. En fin, creo que fueron unos Oscars bastante decentes, la animación de Conan O'Brien estuvo muy buena con un humor muy afilado y directo, nunca se hizo aburrido ni pesado. Cero controversia con los ganadores, quizás un poco con lo de Mikey y Demi pero tampoco es un problema que vaya a trascender. Ganó la película que tenía que ganar y eso se aplaude.

I liked that Conclave won at least one Oscar, Best Adapted Screenplay; for those who haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. Very sober, full of intrigue and great performances. Anyway, I think it was a pretty decent Oscars, Conan O'Brien's animation was very good with a very sharp and direct humor, it never got boring or heavy. Zero controversy with the winners, maybe a little with the Mikey and Demi thing but it's not a problem that will transcend. The movie that had to win won and that is to be applauded.
