(ESP-ENG) The Crow [2024] - Movie Review!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
I repeat what I have always said: the crisis of creativity and inability to create things from scratch that Hollywood is going through is very big. How many productions disguised as “new” based on great classics of the past have we not been seeing in recent times? - In fact the most recent one I saw was Twisters. I ask for new stories, not sequels, prequels or spin-offs, and the reason for that is because many of those things don't work, with their exceptions of course. The Crow is originally from 1994, 30 years ago, a movie starring Brandon Lee, son of the legendary Bruce Lee, who died tragically on the set of that film when he was shot by a gun that was being used in the filming. Is this film the same as that one? - No, in the background yes, but not in its form.
Eric Draven (Bill Skarsgård) is a guy who has been alone all his life, since he was a child he has had to live the unthinkable to the point that he has never felt love or affection. In the reformatory where he is he meets Shelly Webster (FKA Twigs) and they click at the first glance (by the way, strange that there are men and women mixed in this “prison” but well). Falling in love was instantaneous, the life they begin to build is like something out of a fairy tale because everything seems to indicate that they are perfect for each other, soul mates. The thing is, Shelly has a past, a rather dark and sinister one that unfortunately she can't escape from. One night they are both attacked and killed, and Eric has to see it all, something that marked him forever, even after death.
But Eric doesn't die completely, he falls into a kind of purgatory where he is proposed to take revenge for what happened to him, to which he agrees. Now, with a series of supernatural powers, he returns to the world of the living to make each and every one of those involved in the death of his beloved wife pay. In terms of story it is practically the same as the original, perhaps there are certain things that were changed but as I said, the background is the same. For example the way in which Eric returns to “life” is different in this version, here everything is a little more idyllic, it is much more attached to the feelings and as they say in one of the lines in the film: “it's not anger, it's love”. And that's exactly where I see the difference.
For me this is a love story, much deeper than the one in '94. Beyond the revenge and the desire to kill everyone, Eric's real driving force is the immense love he felt for Shelly, that's the reason why he does everything you will see in the film. I think they sought to pay homage to their relationship in this film and it's all about that. The plot is very simple, there is no loss, there is no plot twist, that is, it goes in a straight line. Some may not like that, personally it doesn't bother me, I already knew the story so I knew, more or less, what to expect. Yes there are its weird things in the script, the “jail” thing I still don't get. This doesn't take away from the fact that it's a super entertaining film, it can get a bit cheesy at times but in the second half it makes up for it a bit.
Another strange thing is how similar this character is to Jared Leto's Joker. I say this both physically and in terms of personality, maybe it's just a generalization and that's how they all really are but I found it curious. The acting level is top, we know that the Skarsgård family are all cracks and here Bill proves it. I had seen him in “Boy Kills World”, which in terms of violence is very similar to this film and I was surprised. Here he is on the same path, lots of gore, lots of blood, violence with guns, swords, mutilations, decapitations; it is a role that he is quite good at. On the other hand FKA Twigs, an unknown actress for me, was average, I don't highlight her but she wasn't a disaster either. What I did notice is the chemistry in both of them, hence they worked well as a couple.
As I said the film is very violent and graphic but at the same time goes hand in hand with the love behind every decision and move Eric makes, it's a mix that I think works well, killing and doing it in the way he does it having as a flag not hatred but Shelly as a flag is poetic/dramatic. The Neo-noir style is also appreciated and is very well achieved, in general there is a good cinematography. I liked everything about the visuals, I enjoyed it a lot. Anyway, honestly I'm still sticking with the original even though this film is not bad, I'm very nostalgic about movies. I give it a 6.5/10, I feel it could have been a little better. Anyway, watch it, it's more than fine to pass the time. It's less than two hours long. Here is the trailer.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡Hugs to all, see you all in the next one!

Looks like it truly could be entertaining, although I wonder how they enjoyable it is being straight to the point. This is the first time I am learning of Bruce Lee's son. He looked like he did a great job with his role, telling from the trailer.
Bruce Lee's son made several movies, in fact one of the mythical ones was with Jean Claude Van Damme, very good indeed. It's a pity what happened to him because that movie, even without him, is impressive.
