Leave alone the person who is trying to get on with his life, quietly. You don't know what burdens he carries on his back. Don't think you are invincible. Don't believe that the world is as you think it is. Don't awaken the beast in all of us. No one pays attention, the human spirit is territorial and always wants to impose itself on the seemingly weak.
Guilt. Remorse. Past. Taking refuge as far away as possible from the old life is an option. Trying to find the longed-for tranquility. But we forget that there are places where the hatred of the stranger is very great. Nobody listens to advice. That's why, when everything gets out of control, it will be too late. Every action has consequences. If you are asked for something in a good way, why don't you listen? Be aware of the consequences when that person can't take any more injustice.
This film is the feature debut of filmmaker Julian Higgins, after making some short films and working on TV series. I'm always thrilled by a director's first films, when they leave their mark of narrative identity on their work. The story may not be groundbreaking, but I notice that his images are there in force. Stay tuned for the director's upcoming projects.
Deja en paz a la persona que intenta seguir con su vida, tranquilamente. No sabes qué cargas lleva a sus espaldas. No te creas invencible. No creas que el mundo es como tú crees que es. No despiertes a la bestia que todos llevamos dentro. Nadie hace caso, el espíritu humano es territorial y siempre quiere imponerse a los aparentemente débiles.
Culpa. Remordimiento. Pasado. Refugiarse lo más lejos posible de la vieja vida es una opción. Tratar de encontrar la ansiada tranquilidad. Pero olvidamos que hay lugares donde el odio al extraño es muy grande. Nadie escucha los consejos. Por eso, cuando todo se descontrole, será demasiado tarde. Toda acción tiene consecuencias. Si te piden algo de buena manera, ¿por qué no haces caso? Sé consciente de las consecuencias cuando esa persona no pueda soportar más injusticias.
Esta película es el debut en el largometraje del cineasta Julian Higgins, tras realizar algunos cortometrajes y trabajar en series de televisión. Siempre me emocionan las primeras películas de un director, cuando dejan su marca de identidad narrativa en su obra. Puede que la historia no sea rompedora, pero noto que sus imágenes están ahí con fuerza. Estén atentos a los próximos proyectos del director.

Set in a deep American town, it tells a story with a modern western feel, addressing thorny issues such as racism, extreme machismo, abuse (in all its forms) and impunity in an environment where the law is a dead letter.
When I say that it has a lot of western feel to it, it is not just because it is set in a remote, cold and conservative town where carrying a gun is an everyday occurrence. The protagonist, Sandra, is the outsider who arrives in a place where she is not well regarded. A place where she will find it hard to fit in, coming from a big city where she had a former job as a law enforcement officer. So she finds herself unprotected in a land where everyone makes their own rules and those who should be in charge of dispensing justice are mere puppets in a corrupt society.
Everything has a limit. No matter how much you want to stay out of trouble. You just want to live in peace. When it is trouble that bothers you at your doorstep and you see how much abuse is going on everywhere. They will push you to forget your principles and, like them, act without caring about the consequences of your actions, seeking justice in a ruthless and cruel world.
Ambientada en un pueblo de la América profunda se nos cuenta una historia con aires de western moderno, abordando temas espinosos como el racismo, el machismo extremo, el abuso (en todas sus formas) y la impunidad en un entorno donde la ley es papel mojado.
Cuando digo que tiene mucho de western, no es sólo porque esté ambientada en un pueblo remoto, frío y conservador donde llevar pistola es algo cotidiano. La protagonista, Sandra, es la forastera que llega a un lugar donde no está bien vista. Un lugar en el que le será difícil encajar, ya que viene de una gran ciudad en la que tuvo un antiguo trabajo como agente de la ley. Entonces se encuentra desprotegida en una tierra donde cada uno pone sus propias reglas y los que deberían encargarse de impartir justicia son meras marionetas en una sociedad corrupta.
Todo tiene un límite. No importa cuánto quieras mantenerte alejado de los problemas. Sólo quieres vivir en paz. Cuando son los problemas los que te molestan en la puerta de tu casa y además observas la cantidad de abusos que hay por todas partes. Te empujarán a olvidar tus principios y, como ellos, actuar sin importarte las consecuencias de tus actos, buscando la justicia en un mundo despiadado y cruel.
A man's world. The protagonist is used to a similar environment. Before becoming a teacher she had to excel in a male-dominated environment. But that was in the city. Now she's in no man's land.
Thandie Newton is fantastic. It is her character, her performance, that endows the whole story with energy and strength. She is Sandra, the teacher dealing with the loss of her mother, trying to make peace with the ghosts of her childhood. She wants to rebuild her life, in the middle of nowhere. She is the only African American teacher where she teaches and only wants those whose job it is to protect to do their job. I think the actress won an award for this film.
She's an actress I like more as time goes on. I remember her early movies. I didn't pay much attention to her until she came out in Mission Impossible 2. I must admit I didn't like her character in that movie, but then she gave several outstanding performances in TV series and movies. The rest of the cast is small, but solid. Jeremy Bobb also stands out in his supporting role. Even the director reserves a small character for himself.
Gods Country is a little known film that is worth watching. Look for it on streaming services depending on the country you live in and leave me your opinion in the comments.
Un mundo de hombres. La protagonista está acostumbrada a un entorno similar. Antes de ser profesora tuvo que destacar en un entorno dominado por hombres. Pero eso era en la ciudad. Ahora está en tierra de nadie.
Thandie Newton está fantástica. Es su personaje, su interpretación, lo que dota a toda la historia de energía y fuerza. Ella es Sandra, la profesora que se enfrenta a la pérdida de su madre, que intenta hacer las paces con los fantasmas de su infancia. Quiere rehacer su vida, en medio de la nada. Es la única profesora afroamericana donde da clase y sólo quiere que aquellos cuyo trabajo es proteger hagan su trabajo. Creo que la actriz ganó un premio por esta película.
Es una actriz que me gusta más a medida que pasa el tiempo. Recuerdo sus primeras películas. No le presté mucha atención hasta que salió en Misión Imposible 2. Debo admitir que no me gustó su personaje en esa película, pero luego hizo varias interpretaciones sobresalientes en series de televisión y películas. El resto del reparto es reducido, pero sólido. Jeremy Bobb también destaca en su papel secundario. Incluso el director se reserva un pequeño personaje.

Hola. Parece un filme genial. Aunque pueda ser ambientada en realidades desconocidas para algunos, creo que la esencia de la idea que quiere transmitir nos muestra que ese tipo de situaciones pueden estar en nuestras vidas cotidianas. Además por su reseña veo que interna transmitir valores muy importantes para la convivencia. Saludos.
Thandie Newton is an amazing actor, I got to like her films when she acted in one of Tyler Perry's films. Since then, I always look forward to her movies. Also, I like Higgins' works. Unfortunately the streaming site I use, haven't uploaded this movie yet, but still I will be on the look out for it. From your review, I will be watching this movie. Though I can see a lot of people didn't enjoy this movie that much. Regardless, I will watch it.
The themes you highlighted that was explored in this movie is something I would like to see.

I love Newton, as an actress she never disappoints; and what you have reviewed makes us want to see this director's first feature film. Let's see how he portrays the abusive society that still inhabits villages far from the big capitals...

It sounds good, the struggle for diversity is something that has always been with us. Finding peace is something that may seem utopian, but there are people who love to live in storms. Thanks for the recommendation.
También me gusta mucho la actriz y la vi en varias películas, recuerdo la Misión Imposible 2, creo que la vi como tres veces. Me encantan las películas de acción y más aún si son policiales.
Muchas veces las que tienen poca difusión son mucho mejores que otras. Creo merece la pena.
