I saw this movie a couple of years after its release. The good reviews caught my attention and I found it an interesting film. It is independent cinema. Shot with a very low budget, unknown actors for the time, and where Sean Baker was in charge of practically everything. Operator, script, direction, editing, photography, casting, I'm sure he even looked for the wardrobe.
What caught the attention of many at the time, is that the film was shot entirely with Iphone cell phones, specifically with the model 5. Obviously the color was modified in the post-production process, but the fact that Iphone was used grabbed headlines in some film portals.
The use of smartphones of the manzanita brand, gives it an almost documentary style. A style that the director had already shown with Take Out, which I will write about soon and also another that I have yet to see. The Prince of Broadway. It is this documentary air that gives more realism to his scenes, as well as a very dirty texture.
Vi esta película un par de años después de su estreno. Las buenas críticas me llamaron la atención y me pareció una película interesante. Es cine independiente. Rodada con muy bajo presupuesto, actores desconocidos para la época, y donde Sean Baker se encargó prácticamente de todo. Operador, guión, dirección, montaje, fotografía, casting, seguro que hasta buscó el vestuario.
Lo que llamó la atención de muchos en su momento, es que la película fue rodada íntegramente con moviles Iphone, concretamente con el modelo 5. Evidentemente el color se modificó en el proceso de postproducción, pero el hecho de que se utilizara Iphone acaparó titulares en algunos portales de cine.
El uso de smartphones de la marca de la manzanita, le da un estilo casi documental. Un estilo que el director ya había mostrado con Take Out, de la que escribiré próximamente y también de otra que tengo pendiente de ver. El príncipe de Broadway. Es ese aire documental el que le da más realismo a sus escenas, a la vez que una textura muy sucia.
Set in a city that many associate with glamour, fame and show business, what we see is the shit. Marginal areas and characters. Sleazy businesses, streets of drug dealers, alleys where prostitution is practiced. Everything that a tourist is NOT going to photograph to show off on social networks. It is a constant in the films of this filmmaker and in all of them he does it with great respect, he does not pretend to judge his characters, nor their professions, nor their mistakes. He shows them with their virtues and defects, letting them live, because they are beings who also have aspirations, dreams, looking for a happiness that seems to flee them.
Sad lives. A lot of sadness is transmitted in his characters. They are the losers, the excluded. African-American transsexual prostitutes are the two main characters. Without Dee, who has just been released from prison and when she asks her best friend about her boyfriend, she discovers that he has been unfaithful with another prostitute, a biological woman. This fact triggers the whole plot of the film, as she will look for the unfortunate woman who slept with her man, not realizing that the problem is her boyfriend, who is a pimp.
Alexandra, the other transsexual prostitute, who dreams of being a successful singer and invites everyone to her performance that night, where she will receive the blow of reality, realizing that in the city of dreams, not all of them come true.
Razmik, is another character, with a subplot that intersects with the main one, is an Armenian immigrant who works as a cab driver and loves to hire transsexual prostitutes. He has a wife and children, as well as a nagging mother-in-law, one of those who seem to detest him. What little we see of him conveys that he is trapped in a life he doesn't want.
Although dramatic at its core, the plot presents hilarious situations. There is energy and fast pacing in some of the funnier moments. The sequence in the cafeteria with all the characters present is hilarious. A delightful film that, following the filmmaker's style, shows us ugliness in a beautiful way.

Ambientada en una ciudad que muchos asocian con el glamour, la fama y el espectáculo, lo que vemos es la mierda. Zonas y personajes marginales. Negocios de mala muerte, calles de traficantes, callejones donde se ejerce la prostitución. Todo lo que un turista NO va a fotografiar para presumir en las redes sociales. Es una constante en las películas de este cineasta y en todas ellas lo hace con mucho respeto, no pretende juzgar a sus personajes, ni sus profesiones, ni sus errores. Los muestra con sus virtudes y defectos, dejándolos vivir, porque son seres que también tienen aspiraciones, sueños, buscando una felicidad que parece huirles.
Vidas tristes. Se transmite mucha tristeza en sus personajes. Son los perdedores, los excluidos. Las prostitutas transexuales afroamericanas son las dos protagonistas. Sin Dee, que acaba de salir de la cárcel y cuando pregunta a su mejor amiga por su novio, descubre que éste le ha sido infiel con otra prostituta, una mujer biológica. Este hecho desencadena toda la trama de la película, ya que ella buscará a la desgraciada que se acostó con su hombre, sin darse cuenta de que el problema es su novio, que es un proxeneta.
Alexandra, la otra prostituta transexual, que sueña con ser una cantante de éxito e invita a todos a su actuación de esa noche, donde recibirá el golpe de la realidad, dándose cuenta de que en la ciudad de los sueños, no todos se hacen realidad.
Razmik, es otro de los personajes, con una subtrama que se cruza con la principal, es un inmigrante armenio que trabaja como taxista y le encanta contratar prostitutas transexuales. Tiene mujer e hijos, además de una suegra regañona, de esas que parecen detestarle. Lo poco que vemos de él transmite estar atrapado en una vida que no desea.
Dramática en el fondo, la trama presenta situaciones hilarantes. Hay energía y ritmo trepidante en algunos de los momentos más graciosos. La secuencia en la cafetería con todos los personajes presentes es divertidísima. Una película deliciosa que siguiendo el estilo del cineasta nos muestra la fealdad de una manera hermosa.

Gracias por la recomendación para iniciar la semana, el tema no es de esos que me atrapen, quizá por lo de los tristes personajes y las escenas hilarantes, pero creo en tu opinión como critico.

Estuve algo ocupada con la universidad y un curso del Doctorado, como dice Mary a veces la realidad está fuerte, peo si he tomado fotos, he escrito ideas, y también tengo pensado ver algunas series.

Often independent films are not taken into account because they are low budget films that are not very well known or recognised, but nevertheless they have quality films that show realities, as in the case of this film.
Now the fact that the film was filmed with telephones caught my attention, you can see that it is very different and you can see that documentary style that you mention when you see the trailer.
There is a mixture of sadness, dreams of the characters and real life situations that are often not shown in a film. It's good to bring a different kind of cinema to review and share. Thank you very much JC.

Rodada con Iphone 5. Es muy divertida y triste al mismo tiempo. Quizás a muchos no les guste si la llegan a ver. Todo transcurre en un solo día/noche. Todos los temas recurrente del cineasta estan presentes sin juzgar a los personajes o sus acciones.
Parece muy interesante la forma en que fue rodada, serías gran director de cine!!
This is a very interesting take on cinematography. It is my first time to hear of a film shown using phones, it portrays things at a different perspective. Now about the film, it is kind of a dark genre and something that peaks my interest. Thank you for sharing about this.
I often watch local films or documentaries that have a low budget for capturing photos and videos but what was amazed me with this movie you share is that they just use a cellphone and still get good and clear shots. Thank you for sharing, I will include this in my movie watchlist
