To Catch a Killer | Film Review [En-Es]
He is not looking for destruction, he is looking for relief

I like movies about police investigations trying to catch a killer. It's a genre I love. That's why I was eager to see To Catch a Killer, with the added bonus that it's directed by Argentinean Damián Szifrón, a filmmaker who doesn't have a very extensive filmography, but who is well known for the series Los Simuladores and for the film Relatos Salvajes, which gave him an international accolade by getting him an Oscar nomination.
I think it is his darkest film. There is not much trace of humor in this story. It is the tone that the filmmaker, who is also in charge of writing the screenplay, together with Jonathan Wakeham, of whom I don't know any previous work, wanted to give it.
The film has an intense beginning, something that is appreciated. These stories need to be able to immerse the viewer in the plot as soon as they begin. A disturbing sequence.
It is the stalking of a killer who covers his tracks very well. A killer who is hard to crack and whose cops are always one step behind. It may sound familiar, as there are thousands of similar stories. Szifrón doesn't create anything new or groundbreaking. It is a story that handles all the clichés of crime movies. The important thing is that the story is entertaining and it is a remarkable film.
Me gustan las películas sobre investigaciones policiales que tratan de atrapar a un asesino. Es un género que me encanta. Por eso tenía ganas de ver To Catch a Killer, además con el añadido de que está dirigida por el argentino Damián Szifrón, un cineasta que no tiene una filmografía muy extensa, pero que es muy conocido por la serie Los Simuladores y por la película Relatos Salvajes, que le dio un espaldarazo internacional al conseguir una nominación al Oscar.
Creo que es su película más oscura. No hay mucho rastro de humor en esta historia. Es el tono que quiso darle el cineasta, que también se encarga de escribir el guión, junto con Jonathan Wakeham, del que no conozco ningún trabajo anterior.
La película tiene un comienzo intenso, algo que se agradece. Estas historias necesitan que nada más comenzar sean capaces de sumergir al espectador en la trama. Una secuencia inquietante.
Es el acecho de un asesino que cubre muy bien sus huellas. Un asesino difícil de descifrar y cuyos policías están siempre un paso por detrás. Puede sonar familiar, ya que hay miles de historias similares. Szifrón no crea nada nuevo ni rompedor. Es una historia que maneja todos los tópicos del cine policíaco. Lo importante es que la historia sea entretenida y es una película notable.
In this cat and mouse story, he seeks to delve into the psychological aspect of the characters. The motivations of the killer. A man who knows how to hide, who seems to be off the grid, almost untraceable. Why does he kill? Does he enjoy killing? What does he want? What does he seek by committing these horrible acts?
On the opposite side is Eleanor, the cop with a shady past that prevented her from being accepted into the FBI. Someone capable of understanding the motivations of another broken soul. The same system has relegated her to a role, judging her by condemning her for past mistakes. But unlike the killer, she has more control and is not a psychopath.
Misanthrope, is the title by which it is also known. In several countries it has been distributed with that title. That is what the killer in the film really is. Someone who feels a deep rejection and hatred for the rest of human beings. That is why the task of catching him is difficult, since it is impossible to predict what his next move will be.
It is not only the killer's cunning that poses a problem for the detective in charge. The team will have to face the political inoperativeness, the one that only thinks about the reelection campaign. The one that cares about its economic interests, pressuring and at the same time hindering the work of the investigation.
En esta historia del gato y el ratón, busca adentrarse en el aspecto psicológico de los personajes. Las motivaciones del asesino. Un hombre que sabe esconderse, que parece estar fuera del sistema, casi imposible de rastrear. ¿Por qué mata? ¿Disfruta matando? ¿Qué es lo que quiere? ¿Qué busca cometiendo estos actos horribles?
En el lado opuesto está Eleanor, la policía con un pasado turbio que le impidió ser aceptada en el FBI. Alguien capaz de entender las motivaciones de otra alma rota. El mismo sistema la ha relegado a un papel, juzgándola al condenarla por los errores del pasado. Pero a diferencia del asesino, ella tiene más control y no es una psicópata.
Misántropo, es el título por el que también se conoce. En varios países se ha distribuido con ese título. Eso es lo que realmente es el asesino de la película. Alguien que siente un profundo rechazo y odio por el resto de los seres humanos. Por eso la tarea de atraparlo es difícil, ya que es imposible predecir cuál será su próximo movimiento.
No sólo la astucia del asesino supone un problema para el detective al mando. El equipo tendrá que enfrentarse a la inoperancia política, aquella que sólo piensa en la campaña de reelección. La que se preocupa por sus intereses económicos, presionando y a la vez entorpeciendo el trabajo de investigación.
Szifrón knows how to take advantage of a good cast. Shailene Woodley is fantastic playing Eleanor. I like seeing her in these types of stories. Her character is compelling and she is effective in conveying emotions.
She is accompanied by Ben Mendelsohn, one of those actors who excels in everything he does. Whether as a good lead, supporting or villain, this actor is great. Here he plays Lammark, the FBI special agent in charge of catching the killer and who at the same time must deal with bureaucracy to keep his job.
The killer I won't tell you which actor plays him, but he is an actor I have seen in many productions and the character fits his physique perfectly.

Szifrón sabe aprovechar un buen reparto. Shailene Woodley está fantástica interpretando a Eleanor. Me gusta verla en este tipo de historias. Su personaje es convincente y ella es eficaz transmitiendo emociones.
La acompaña Ben Mendelsohn, uno de esos actores que destaca en todo lo que hace. Ya sea como buen protagonista, secundario o villano, este actor es genial. Aquí interpreta a Lammark, el agente especial del FBI encargado de atrapar al asesino y que al mismo tiempo debe lidiar con la burocracia para mantener su trabajo.
El asesino no les voy a decir que actor lo interpreta, pero es un actor que he visto en muchas producciones y el personaje se adapta perfectamente a su físico.

Haaablame muchachon I saw the trailer and I liked it, it left me lost enough and curious to know this crime story that if, wow that can take time to cook then if you start with action or with things that impact better to arouse interest as fast as possible.
I do not remember having seen Mendhelsohn but I notice only with the trailer that stands out in his interpretation, seeing the trailer alone of the two the one that fits the most is him.
Noted to know the actor of the killer when watching the movie because that is the maximum ingredient in this kind of plots 😀

Me gustó esta película, disfrute en gran parte de la historia aunque no me convenció mucho el final; creo que se pudo hacer mejor.
La química entre Woodley y Mendelsohn es lo mejor del film asi como muchas escenas de tensión y la posterior cacería del asesino; es un film con todos los clichés tal como dices en la reseña y eso la hace entretenida.

Me dieron unas ganas enormes de ver esta película! La forma en la que describes la trama y la dinámica entre los personajes me tiene realmente intrigado. Ese juego del gato y el ratón entre el asesino y la detective Eleanor suena de lo más emocionante. e encanta el género de las historias policiacas de persecución a un asesino en serie. si, el cineasta argentino. Este film es entretenido, no es una obra maestra y no creo que la vuelva a ver, pero si es un buen film para pasar el rato
