The vikings: Valhalla, it is the first viking series that I've seen, and I am watching it right now. And in this post I want to share with you some of my impressions about its first season. The season has eight episodes, and from the beginning it can hook one easily, let me show you in three simple points, the first two about the series itself and the third my personal appreciation, that means, some reflections that I had during the development of the show.

The context

The context is double: For one side, it's the different battles between Vikings and England, but for the other side, it's a spiritual battle of faith, between the old beliefs and the Christian beliefs than they are mixed among the people of vikings. We can situate ourselves to have a clearer idea of where we are, at the beginning of the 11th century, when the fight between the two people was being intensifier more and more.

I think that when we are in front of a history movie, we must are very conscientious that who tell us this history they have their perspective and intentions, so the development of the film will be led for those. This series isn't an exception, so it tells us the history highlighting a side more than the other, it isn't bad just we must pay attention to this, to the end in these conflicts there aren't good and evils pure but a little of both in each group. For example, in respect to the spiritual battle between Vikings and Christians beliefs. From the beginning, the violence that some Christians spread was giving a negative point of view about this faith, in one of the episode an character says that in both religions there are good and evils people, it means how each one understands and practices their beliefs can't be the measure for to judge the truth of the same.

The characters

The principals characters are some vikings: some brothers, Leif and freydis, and Harold and Olaf, but it's very important the king Canute as well, so he leads a revenge, but he finishes builds an empire or at least with this intention. These characters with others show us things interesting about the Vikings culture: their ability on the sea, the sense of revenge, some of their Gods, their beliefs of a life after the death, the Valhalla is in fact like the paradise for the Christians, etc. There is a darkness side among the Viking people, it is represented in the series for the berserkers, a group that thinks must to pure the world of the pagans through the murder.

In the side of the Saxons, we can meet with some important characters as well, like the Aetherled II, who make to scale the confrontation to an level of violence without control, Queen Emma, a woman very smart that impressed us from the beginning for her attitude, Godwin, the advisor of the turn ruler, someone very astute as well, that acts according to circumstances and his interests. The young Edmund, Prince and king of England but his impulses weren't good allies, in fact, he has a sad end. Finally, we have some characters of nobleness, although they weren't conformable with the state of things, they must obey if they didn't want to face to a premature death.

My conclusions

• This series brings us closer to the reality of the clashes between Vikings and Saxons, which were full of events that influenced the course of history.

• It is very interesting how the diverse cultures interact. Tolerance should prevail, but the series shows us the harsh and regrettable reality of what happens when it does not.

• The characters are well-developed, and the plot is engaging. However, sometimes the plot jumps ahead too quickly, which can be confusing. I would give this series an overall rating of 7/10.

Esta es la primera serie vikinga que veo y la estoy disfrutando mucho. En esta publicación quiero compartir contigo algunas de mis impresiones sobre su primera temporada. La temporada tiene ocho episodios y, desde el principio, te engancha fácilmente. Te lo muestro en tres puntos, los primeros dos sobre la serie en sí y el tercero mi valoración personal, es decir, algunas reflexiones que tuve durante el desarrollo de la serie.

El contexto

El contexto es doble: por un lado, las diferentes batallas entre vikingos e Inglaterra, pero por el otro, una batalla espiritual de fe, entre las antiguas creencias y las creencias cristianas que se mezclan entre el pueblo vikingo. Podemos situarnos para tener una idea más clara de dónde estamos, a principios del siglo XI, cuando la lucha entre los dos pueblos se intensificaba cada vez más.

Creo que cuando estamos frente a una película histórica, debemos ser muy conscientes de que quien nos cuenta esta historia tiene su perspectiva e intenciones, por lo que el desarrollo de la película se verá guiado por ellas. Esta serie no es una excepción, por lo que nos cuenta la historia destacando un lado más que el otro, no es malo solo hay que prestar atención a esto, al final en estos conflictos no hay buenos y malos puros sino un poco de ambos en cada grupo. Por ejemplo, respecto a la batalla espiritual entre las creencias vikingas y cristianas. Desde el principio, la violencia que algunos cristianos esparcen da un punto de vista negativo sobre esta fe, en un episodio un personaje dice que en ambas religiones hay gente buena y mala, lo que significa que cómo cada uno entiende y practica sus creencias no puede ser la medida para juzgar la verdad de las mismas.

Los personajes

Los personajes principales son algunos vikingos: los hermanos Leif y Freydis, y Harold y Olaf, pero también es muy importante el rey Canuto, que lidera una venganza, pero termina construyendo un imperio o al menos con esa intención. Estos personajes junto a otros nos muestran cosas interesantes sobre la cultura vikinga: su habilidad en el mar, el sentido de la venganza, algunos de sus dioses, sus creencias en una vida después de la muerte, el Valhalla es de hecho como el paraíso para los cristianos, etc. Existe un lado oscuro entre el pueblo vikingo, representado en la serie por los berserkers, un grupo que cree que debe purificar el mundo de los paganos a través del asesinato.

En el lado de los sajones, también podemos encontrarnos con algunos personajes importantes, como Ethelred II, quien escala la confrontación a un nivel de violencia sin control, la reina Emma, una mujer muy inteligente que nos impresiona desde el principio por su actitud, Godwin, el consejero del rey de turno, alguien muy astuto también, que actúa según las circunstancias y sus intereses. El joven Edmund, príncipe y rey de Inglaterra, pero sus impulsos no fueron buenos aliados, de hecho, tiene un final triste. Finalmente, tenemos algunos personajes de nobleza, que aunque no estaban conformes con el estado de cosas, debían obedecer si no querían enfrentarse a una muerte prematura.

Mis conclusiones

• Esta serie nos acerca a la realidad de los enfrentamientos entre vikingos y sajones, llenos de acontecimientos que influyeron en el curso de la historia.

• Es muy interesante cómo interactúan las diversas culturas. La tolerancia debería prevalecer, pero la serie nos muestra la dura y lamentable realidad de lo que ocurre cuando no lo hace.

• Los personajes están bien desarrollados y la trama es atractiva. Sin embargo, a veces la trama avanza demasiado rápido, lo que puede resultar confuso. Le daría a esta serie una calificación general de 7/10.
