REVIEW: THE POWER OF THE DOG
The Power of the Dog starts off strong with a lot of tension. Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a tough, mean rancher who seems to enjoy making everyone around him uncomfortable. When his brother George (Jesse Plemons) marries Rose (Kirsten Dunst) and brings her and her son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee) to live with them, Phil quickly makes it clear he doesn’t like them. He picks on Rose and Peter in subtle but cruel ways, and you can feel the tension building. From the start, you know something big is going to happen, and it keeps you interested.
As the movie goes on, it slows down a lot. The scenes of the ranch and the mountains are beautiful to look at, but the story takes its time. There are a lot of quiet, uncomfortable moments between the characters, and not much action happens. At times, it feels like it’s dragging, and you might wish it would get to the point faster. But the slow pace helps build suspense, and you start to feel the same unease the characters are feeling. It’s not a fast-paced movie, but it’s one that pulls you into its mood.
Benedict Cumberbatch is amazing as Phil. He makes you believe in the character completel he’s mean and scary, but you can tell there’s more going on underneath. Kodi Smit-McPhee is also really good as Peter. At first, Peter seems shy and weak, but as the story goes on, you see he’s a lot smarter and stronger than people think. Kirsten Dunst does a great job as Rose, showing her struggles and how she slowly falls apart, but her character doesn’t get as much focus as you might expect, which is a bit disappointing.
The ending ties everything together in a really shocking way. It’s the kind of twist that makes you think back on everything you just watched and realize how clever the story was. The Power of the Dog is not a movie for everyone it’s slow and quiet, and it takes patience to get through. But if you stick with it, it’s a powerful and beautifully made film. I’d give it an 8/10 it’s not perfect, but it’s definitely worth watching.
