One Metric To Rule Them All!

Welcome to my blog :)

If you are new here, I can't begiun to express how much it means to me that you spend a few minutes of your day and hang out with me and my content!

A quick note about yours truly. I'm 'Jongo' and I've been on the blockchain since December 2017. The community kind of gave me the nickname 'Jongo' because of no one could figure out what my 'name' was....

You see, in all my brilliance, when I joined I thought it would be cool to add my middle initial to my username....Jon G. Olson. Of course, no one knew me, so I became known as....

Jon Golson

Soon, people started to shorten it to....Jongo. I didn't name myself, the community did! So I wear it like a badge :)

And why is this important or what the heck does this even have to do about this post?

I'll explain :)

Jongo does these posts every Saturday night. I call them #MyHiveGoals and it's my way of highlighting my week on the blockchain. My wins, my losses and some metrics I use to judge my progress here.

I talk about the $HIVE Power I have accumulated over the past 7 days. And how far away I am to my goals that I set for myself every year.

I also track my $HIVE I earn per day, the $LEO I accumulate as well but there is a metric I leave out which I wanted to talk about tonight.

First up, the idea for this post was from @yeckingo1 and a comment they left on my blog the other day....

Followers matter on this blockchain!

It really made me realize how important that number is on our blogs....

Recently I reached a nice little milestone here on chain, where I earned my 4000th follower.

You see, this may seem like a vanity metric to some. Kind of like our reputation scores on the chain. But for me, this might be the most important metric one can focus on when it comes to growth on chain.

Sure, there is lots of attrition. And a lot of the followers I had from 2017 might not be around anymore. But to me, this is the true measuring stick when it comes to....Success on a true #web3 platform.

One of my pillar pieces of content was something I called the 5-500-5000 formula. The idea is simple, engage with 5 members of the community every day, this becomes 500 followers on chain which leads to eventually earning 5000 Hive Power from constant effort.

The spark to this maybe the daily engagement but I think what adds the fuel to the fire, is the target in followers.

Why?

I don't know about you, but I rarely find the 'hot topics' here on chain. What I end up looking at, engaging with and curating are things from my following feed!

So as a content creator here, I think focusing on growing your following is paramount to long term success.

Remember, your follower list is built into every app that builds here on chain. I didn't need to grow my following on 3speak, and then Liketu and then InLeo....I just focused, on growing my following on the blockchain as a whole.

That's very powerful, considering, you own this account....No one can stop you from gaining followers here.

And to me, that's a great activity to focus on and spend my time on here.....Is this the one metric to rule them all?

I've been following your posts to the degree that I didn't realize I never actually clicked "follow." Well, now it's done.

I've got Jongol fever.

ha ha ha ha thank you kindly!

Jongol fever....Singing like Stevie huh?

I agree with you about spending most of the time engaging with people on my following feed. I've recently begun to think of it as my "Frens Feed"

I remember when I first started with @ecency that some days I had to scroll through lots of posts about topics that didn't interest me. But now, my Frens Feed gives me a constant stream of great content that I can enjoy at any time of day.

Completely agree.....It's such better content to consume when you have built an online relationship with followers / followings.

December 2017..., that blows me away as I'd thought you'd joined much earlier than that. Possibly Spring of 2016 which is when I started lurking (and learning) on Steemit before officially joining in July 2017. Samstonehill's videos from Bali were what pushed me over the top to finally join and start pitching in, and I've been at it ever since.

In September of 2017 I flew to Germany and lived there for the next 5 months. I had so much trouble (with Coinbase) trying to buy crypto as a US citizen while being an EU resident. But your 5-500-5000 formula seems to have served you well, and now you're a pillar of the community here on Hive, and a real-life example that plugging away every day can lead to success.

I have a question for you: Did you make a big initial investment in the STEEM token all at once to get started? (as some did). Since I couldn't open a CB account, I had to buy the token via Steam gift cards on Paxful, which meant $250, cost me $500! Which limited my ability to grow as fast as I wanted to.

So I'm always curious how those that are whales now, accelerated their growth. Was it a large initial investment for you or the slow burn of daily engagement and organic growth? I heard there was one guy who took out a 2nd mortgage, and another that sold his car in order to invest in the platform. Also, when did you and Taskmaster become friends and decide to do your landmark podcast? (that might be worthy of a post on its own!) :) Thanks to the both of you for inspiring so many of us.

It's funny because at the time, it was mammoth investing for me. I'd get an extra 25 bucks and buy 5 tokens LOLOL But nah, nothing huge up front. Mostly 25 tokens here and there when I could, and a lot of content. I got my big 'kick' when I sold steem for hive.

A lot of the OG's of the chain started mining Steem on day one. Lots of them got in at the right time and right place. But some of the newer guys and gals, invested heavily into it.

@taskmaster4450 was a guest on our old Monday night live shows for CTP, and we just thought it would be a good idea to keep the talks going. Started doing them directly after that.

I feel the hardest thing is building a list. I recently learned about google's reader monetization which is same as substack. I am learning to build list now because you can turn paid list using that tool. I wasted so many years not doing it.

It's the one thing I'm so thankful I did for years and years of building businesses online. Build that list.

Congratulations on reaching 4,000 followers. I understand the need for followers or a list, but maybe it's just because I don't really bother too much, it hasn't mattered as much to me. However, I do engage with everyone who shows up on my posts and I agree that things will just move forward here with collecting more followers.

avatar

I bet if you tracked it, you'd be pretty happy with the followers you are attracting ;)

Thank you for noticing my comment. For me this is the most important metric because Hive is primarily a community and the more connections you have, the more useful you are to the community. Sometimes we focus a lot on economics, but if Hive becomes world-famous, those 4,000 will become 4 million and then the money will arrive by itself.
Also, although some may not believe it, there are things more important than money.

avatar

That's a great way to look at it. The community is here and will only get bigger and much more active. Now is a great time to grow!
