New Life es la primera película del director John Rosman en 2023,es una película interesante pero frustrante a la vez porque empieza de una manera, cambia a otra y termina en un lugar completamente diferente, la primera parte de la historia muestra a Jessica huyendo de unos misteriosos hombres vestidos de traje que al parecer están relacionados con un arma biológica. Al principio no sé por qué pero intenta desesperadamente llegar a Canadá, también está Elsa que tiene sus propios problemas, recientemente le han diagnosticado esclerosis (ELA) y está empezando a afectar a su cuerpo.

La trama es bastante sencilla, pero lo que viene a continuación no lo es tanto, la historia cuenta cómo Jessica huye de los malos de siempre además de que es portadora de un virus mortal que convierte a las personas en criaturas similares a los zombis. Al principio intentan venderlo como Ébola, pero es algo mucho peor. Por el camino hay desconocidos que ayudan a Jessica sin saber que están firmando su propia sentencia de muerte al hablar con ella, mientras Elsa la persigue, intentando ocultar a sus colegas su deteriorado estado.

Creo que una de las cosas buenas de New Life es la actuación Sonya Walger interpreta a Elsa hace muy bien el papel de alguien que tiene que lidiar con la lucha física de alguien que se enfrenta a la ELA y con el peso emocional de alguien que sabe que su tiempo se acaba. Hayley Erin hace el papel de Jessica, acepta un trabajo en un bar donde trabaja para Molly, interpretada por Ayanna Berkshire.

La película tiene una transformación de thriller de persecución a película de terror y los efectos de maquillaje de los infectados son bastante impresionantes para una película que creo no fue de tanto presupuesto pero mi problema con la película es ese cambio zombie que ocurre a la mitad y nunca se explica por qué Jessica se mantuvo escondida acerca de su condición, una conversación podría haber evitado todo esto, pero esto nos lleva a una trama enredada en la que la gente no habla entre sí, otra cosa que me parece forzada es la subtrama de la ELA que parece que formara parte de otra película.

Para mí New Life es un buen ejemplo de cómo la mezcla de géneros puede mejorar o dañar la historia de una película, me gusta el intento de Rosman de combinar un thriller de persecución con horror corporal y personajes sobre la enfermedad terminal, pero me dio la sensación de que intentó abarcar demasiado y el mayor defecto de la película es la explicación de por qué Jessica nunca se entera de que está enferma. A pesar de todo esto la película es capaz de mantener su esencia incluso cuando cambia de género, especialmente en las escenas en las que personas inocentes ayudan a Jessica, sin saber que al hacerlo están cavando su propia tumba. Aunque la película tenga problemas de estructura no puedo negar la intención de Rosman de arriesgarse con los diferentes géneros y mantener la tensión de la película.

New Life cierra con los temas de la supervivencia, la codicia y el costo humano de los avances científicos, una vez que Jessica se entera de que es la paciente cero de este virus zombi y de que todas las personas que la han ayudado se han infectado, la película da un cambio más oscuro. Jessica y Elsa se enfrentan en una cabaña remota donde el deterioro de Elsa por la esclerosis y la culpa de Jessica por haber propagado el virus sin saberlo crean bastante tensión y suspenso. El final de la película insinúa que Jessica nunca tuvo una oportunidad de escapar, ya que sus perseguidores tenían demasiado poder y dinero, al final se descubre que lo que perseguían con la sangre de Jessica nunca fue salvar vidas, sino convertir el virus en un arma, esto demuestra que a veces los verdaderos monstruos no son los infectados, sino la gente de traje, tomando decisiones en salas de juntas, esto demuestra que los intereses de las grandes corporaciones son más importantes que los individuales y el beneficio siempre parece tener prioridad sobre la vida humana. New Life son tres películas en una, un thriller de persecución, una película de terror corporal, un drama de personajes sobre una enfermedad terminal, me gustó lo que Rosman quiso lograr pero creo que fue muy ambicioso y aunque cada una de las piezas es interesante por sí misma no encajan tan bien como deberían, yo le doy 5.8/10.

At first I don't know why but she desperately tries to get to Canada, there is also Elsa who has her own problems, she has recently been diagnosed with sclerosis (ALS) and it is starting to affect her body.

The plot is simple enough but what comes next is not so simple, the story tells how Jessica is on the run from the usual bad guys plus she is a carrier of a deadly virus that turns people into zombie like creatures. At first they try to sell it as Ebola, but it's something much worse. Along the way there are strangers who help Jessica without knowing that they are signing their own death warrant by talking to her, while Elsa chases after her, trying to hide her deteriorating condition from her colleagues.

I think one of the good things about New Life is the acting Sonya Walger plays Elsa does very well in the role of someone who has to deal with the physical struggle of someone dealing with ALS and the emotional weight of someone who knows her time is running out. Hayley Erin plays Jessica, she takes a job at a bar where she works for Molly, played by Ayanna Berkshire.

The movie has a transformation from chase thriller to horror movie and the makeup effects of the infected are pretty impressive for a movie that I believe was not that big budget but my problem with the movie is that zombie change that happens in the middle and it is never explained why Jessica was kept hidden about her condition, a conversation could have avoided all this but this leads to a convoluted plot where people don't talk to each other, another thing that seems forced to me is the ALS subplot that seems like it was part of another movie.

For me New Life is a good example of how mixing genres can improve or hurt a film's story, I like Rosman's attempt to combine a chase thriller with body horror and characters about terminal illness, but I got the feeling that he tried to cover too much and the biggest flaw of the film is the explanation of why Jessica never finds out she is sick. Despite all this the film is able to maintain its essence even when it switches genres, especially in the scenes where innocent people help Jessica, unaware that in doing so they are digging their own grave. Although the film has structure problems I cannot deny Rosman's intention to take risks with different genres and maintain the tension of the film.

New Life closes with the themes of survival, greed and the human cost of scientific advances, once Jessica learns that she is patient zero of this zombie virus and that all the people who have helped her have been infected, the film takes a darker turn. Jessica and Elsa face off in a remote cabin where Elsa's deterioration from sclerosis and Jessica's guilt for unknowingly spreading the virus create quite a bit of tension and suspense. The end of the film hints that Jessica never had a chance to escape, as her pursuers had too much power and money, in the end it is discovered that what they were after with Jessica's blood was never to save lives, but to weaponize the virus, this shows that sometimes the real monsters are not the infected, but the people in suits, making decisions in boardrooms, this shows that the interests of large corporations are more important than the individual and profit always seems to take precedence over human life. New Life is three films in one, a chase thriller, a body horror film, a character drama about a terminal illness, I liked what Rosman wanted to achieve but I think it was too ambitious and although each of the pieces is interesting on its own they don't fit together as well as they should, I give it 5.8/10.
