Riveting! Review Of Silo (2023)

Then Allison (played by Rashida Jones), the wife of the sheriff (played by David Oyelowo), hears that the powers that be in the Silo are lying to its residents to keep them under control and that there's life outside the silo. Hurt from the inability to have children after her doctor lied to her, she asks to leave the silo, hurting her husband.

The residents of the Silo watch from the screen as Allison steps outside in a white suit, cleans the screen, walks a few feet and collapses, revealing that it's unsafe outside. Her husband, the sheriff, is heartbroken and begins to investigate the "truth" of the things his wife heard. Then he meets Juliette Nichols (played by Rebecca Ferguson), an engineer working in Mechanical, a lower level of the Silo and the "truth" begins to unravel. Will these dissidents succeed in exposing and stopping the powers brutally controlling the Silo?

Review

I'll say the raves are justified. The plot of this ten-episode dystopian series is brilliant. The first two episodes are exciting but in the general sense of the entire series, I can say it's slow paced. We see a couple trying to have a baby but it quickly becomes clear that their government, referred to as "Judicial", doesn't want them to. The search for the "truth" begins after two deaths that residents of the Silo think it's natural is shown to be murder. Someone doesn't want the truth to be exposed and wants the residents living in subservience and fear of the unknown.

I love the creator, Graham Yost's artistic style of storytelling in the sense that the protagonist is not immediately introduced in the first two episodes until later. The story and drama gradually builds from a riveting point that gets the audience's attention, enriching the character development and eventually leading to a satisfying climax. The puzzles fit together and in the last three episodes, they answer the intrigues surrounding the series. This is classic.

The cast's performance is outstanding. Rebecca Ferguson impressively embodies the role of Juliette. She is brave, unconventional, independent, and a risk-taking truth seeker because of love. Yet she's vulnerable because of her past that somehow links her to the conspiracies going on at the top. She's always been a fixer and rising to the top, she works to "fix" the rot and lies in the system.

Common who played the part of the villain Sims did great too. I'm reminded of his similar role in John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017). He plays the role of a villain very well.

In my opinion, Silo shouldn't only be watched for the fun of it but viewers should reflect on the message. This series challenges its audience to think deeply on the concept of truth, the conditioning that shapes our perceptions of the world and the source of the conditioning.

Overall, Silo is a TV series worth watching and the last four episodes are so riveting that you would want to watch them at a stretch because I did! I look forward to the second season. I'll give it 3 stars out of 5.
