Men In Black: CineTv Contest

@cinetv released a prompt a few days ago asking us to talk about our favourite film with an alien. While there are a few that instantly jump to mind, I'd like to talk about one that I haven't seen in years, but really want to watch again.

Here's A Link To The Prompt Post For Anyone Interested In Participating.

Aliens In Film
As mentioned in the prompt post, aliens have always been a part of the human consciousness, from recent history with science fiction and galaxy-spanning tales in comic books, novels, and films, to the ancient Greek stories of boats that could sail to space and visit other worlds and even as far as ancient myths about gods coming down to visit our ancient ancestors.

The unknown is interesting to ponder, and while sometimes it can be scary, most of the time it can invigorating to imagine what may well be out there... or even here with us right now. The truth of the matter is, we just don't know, and that in part is the beauty of it; I think some things are better off remaining a mystery, as there's no fun definitive proof and evidence.

Men In Black
This is a movie I haven't seen since I was a kid, and when I saw it then I thought it was brilliant. I loved the idea of aliens walking among us, and as well as being thought-provoking, it was also very funny and didn't take itself too seriously.

Will Smith plays J - who is a cop chosen along with a few other people considered the best of the best, but through his own initiative and intelligence is singled out by Tommy Lee Jones (Agent K) to be chosen as his new partner and introduced to a world that is completely alien - excuse the pun - to the one he knows.

I think the idea for this film is great; that Earth is an intergalactic refugee world for aliens who need to hide out or find somewhere more hospitable where they can just make a living. Also, the idea of the memory-wiping pen is really good too and funny. This object is used a lot throughout the film as they go from person to person talking about alien sightings and eventually being put on the case of a "Big Bad" who always freaked me out as a kid.

The film is a great idea and is obviously based on the mysterious people who have been sighted multiple times in real life, whenever some kind of UFO or Alien sighting takes place. I have heard a lot about them while looking into all this stuff, and while there is no damning evidence of who they are, or what they do, it is still pretty interesting to hear accounts of people who have interacted with them or seen them.

Other Worlds
I've always been a big fan of sci-fi, ever since being introduced to Star Wars at an early age. The idea of other worlds, races, cultures, history, and technology has always fascinated me, and that fascination is kind of the reason I write my own science fiction stories.

Thinking of all of this stuff is a lot of fun, and sometimes I can write something that I completely get lost in, which is most of the fun of writing - or just about any creative hobby - in general.

I do prefer sci-fi that takes place far away from Earth, and not in our own timeline. I've always preferred the Star Wars style of things where it is set, "In A Galaxy, Far Far Away..." As opposed to being set on Earth, or being set in the future, not that I don't enjoy many science fiction films that are set here, because realistically most of them are. Like, Starship Troopers, District 9, Paul, E.T, Star Trek, Independence Day, and of course Men In Black.

The reason I prefer sci-fi that doesn't revolve around Earth - especially when writing - is that I think there is much more freedom to create and get away from here for a bit, which should be what it's about.

Time For A Re-watch
I'm going to watch this film again soon and I can't wait as it has been so long and I'm sure there are many elements of it that I've completely forgotten. As far as I know, it's Amazon Prime, however, I think it's leaving in the next 4 days, so I'd better hurry up and throw it on.

I just watched Life with Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ryan Reynolds... It's not a bad movie, but it is very predictable... As many "alien" movies... :)

I noticed a lot of the good movies from the 80's and 90's are mostly pay to watch now. I don't recall going to many movies after my daughter was born.

yep, a brilliant film with a darn good cast. It still bugs me to watch it. pun intended. Actually it's been quite awhile since I last watched it. Too many other films on my list right now, so it could be awhile.

I actually went and had a rewatch last night, it's really good and still holds up. I watched the second one, but that one kind of feels a bit different.
