Ao Oni The Animation - The Legend Of A Killer Ogre And Its Bad Visual Design [ENG -ESP]
I have always had my doubts and doubts with all anime or anime movies that carry the phrase “The Animation” in the title, sometimes these series manage to have interesting results, a little curious, entertaining and even of good quality, while in other cases we are left thinking that at least they managed to create a peculiar story in their style. Ao Oni The Animation is a movie of the year 2017 and that if I am not mistaken is based on the story of a video game, it is a story of terror and suspense which manages to entertain at times, but has perhaps one of the endings that left me more unhappy in the anime and movies I've seen.
The story introduces us to the young boys of a school club, the folklore club composed of 5 members, although the 5 have some relevance in the story most of it focuses on 3 of them who are Manabe, Murakami and Takashiro who will be the president of the club. The whole story focuses on how they are investigating an ancient local legend about a kind of Ogre that inhabits the nearby mountain and who is said to have devoured several small children long ago leaving only traces of blood.
The local story although most consider it simply an ancient legend, has had great popularity thanks to a video game inspired by the same which came to have manga and anime versions, however the students of the club believe that it is much more than a simple local legend and want to investigate its origin talking even with the creator of the video game who was a local of the town, but everything will become strange when before the meeting with the creator of the video game this one commits suicide in strange conditions.
The story gradually creates a greater sense of suspense and some terror by showing that the creature of legends is not just a fantasy creation and that there really may be something mysterious and dangerous, even much closer to the boys of the group being present in their own school, it also shows how it seems that someone or something strange wants the whole story to be kept secret and it seems that all those who are focused on discovering about this strange creature seem to have a tragic end.
One aspect they use at the beginning is to show the creature in very dark shots or simply show it in a very blurred and fuzzy way which creates doubt about what its true form will be like, this is always helpful in horror stories because it generates more suspense not knowing what it is that murders people in the dark. However, when the creature is fully and sharply shown it completely loses its horror element and becomes something even absurd, this is mostly due to its design and animation style.
This film practically in its entirety is produced by CGI and although it has always been a questionable subject, in Ao Oni The Animation the quality is quite criticizable and can be annoying, while some characters like Manabe and Takashiro can have an acceptable result, the rest at times presents quite strange and annoying designs to the eye, an aspect that can detract from the story and the horror element of the story, that is even more annoying when the full designs of the ogres appear.
The development of the story in Ao Oni The Animation is a bit changeable, at times it manages to create a feeling of mystery and suspense, at the same time creating possibilities to mislead the viewer and not be so predictable, at other times especially after the appearance of the ogres and in moments of action it can fall back on aspects a bit predictable and even cliché in horror movies, despite everything at the end of the story, manages to get to the same without the viewer has much idea of what will really happen, although personally got so unexpected end for me by the simple fact of using a style of closure that I do not usually like because for my taste can be a bit frustrating and even boring, besides leaving several aspects in the intrigue. Although the story has several aspects that can be criticized at the end it can be somewhat different, if it had been made with a better animation style it would have been a much better result.

Siempre he tenido mis reversas y dudas con todos los animes o películas anime que lleven la frase “The Animation” en el título, algunas veces estas series consiguen tener resultados interesares, un poco curiosos, entretenidos y hasta de buena calidad, mientras en otros casos nos quedamos pensando que al menos consiguieron crear una historia peculiar a su estilo. Ao Oni The Animation se trata de una película del año 2017 y que si no me equivoco está basada en la historia de un videojuego, se trata de una historia de terror y suspenso la cual logra por momentos entretener, pero tiene tal vez uno de los finales que más inconforme me dejaron en los animes y películas que he visto.
La historia nos presenta a los jóvenes muchachos de un club escolar, el club del folclore integrado por 5 miembros, aunque los 5 tienen cierta relevancia en la historia la mayor parte de la misma se centra en 3 de ellos quienes son Manabe, Murakami y Takashiro quien será la presidenta del club. Toda la historia se centra en como ellos están investigando una antigua leyenda local sobre una especie de Ogro que habita en la montaña cercana y de quien se dice devoro a varios niños pequeños hace mucho tiempo dejando solamente rastros de sangre.
La historia local a pesar de que la mayoría la considera simplemente una leyenda antigua, ha tenido gran popularidad gracias a un videojuego inspirado en la misma la cual llego a tener versiones de manga y anime, sin embargo los estudiantes del club creen que se trata de mucho más que una simple leyenda local y deseen investigar a fondo su origen hablando incluso con el creador del videojuego quien fue un local del pueblo, pero todo se volverá extraño cuando antes de la reunión con el creador del videojuego este se suicide en extrañas condiciones.
La historia poco a poco va creando mayor sensación de suspenso y algo de terror al dejar ver que la criatura de las leyendas no es simplemente una creación fantasiosa y que realmente puede existir algo misterioso y peligroso, incluso mucho más cerca de los muchachos del grupo estando presente en su propia escuela, también se va mostrando como parece que alguien o algo extraño quiere que toda la historia se mantenga en secreto y que parece que todos los que están enfocados en descubrir sobre esta extraña criatura parecen tener un trágico final.
Un aspecto que utilizan al inicio es mostrar a la criatura en planos muy oscuros o simplemente mostrarla de forma muy difuminada y borrosa lo cual crea la duda sobre como será su verdadera forma, esto siempre resulta útil en las historias de terror debido a que genera más suspenso no saber qué es lo que asesina a las personas en la oscuridad. Sin embargo, cuando la criatura se muestra completamente y de forma nítida pierde completamente su elemento de terror y pasa a ser algo incluso absurdo, esto se debe mayormente a su diseño y estilo de animación.
Esta película prácticamente en su totalidad es producida mediante CGI y aunque siempre ha sido un tema cuestionable, en Ao Oni The Animation la calidad es bastante criticable y puede resultar molesta, mientras algunos personajes como Manabe y Takashiro pueden tener un resultado aceptable, el resto por momentos presenta diseños bastante extraños y molestos a la vista, un aspecto que puede restarle importancia a la historia y al elemento de terror de la historia, eso es aún más molesto cuando aparecen los diseños completos de los ogros.
El desarrollo de la historia en Ao Oni The Animation es un poco cambiante, por momentos logra crear un sentimiento de misterio y suspenso, al mismo tiempo de ir creando posibilidades para despistar al espectador y no ser tan predecible, en otros momentos en especial luego de la aparición de los ogros y en momentos de acción puede recaer en aspectos un poco predecibles y hasta cliché en las películas de terror, a pesar de todo al final de la historia, logra llegar hasta la misma sin que el espectador tenga mucha idea de lo que realmente va suceder, aunque en lo personal consiguió tan inesperado final para mí por el simple hecho de utilizar un estilo de cierre que no me suele gustar debido a que para mi gusto puede resultar un poco frustrante y hasta aburrido, además de dejar varios aspectos en la intriga. Aunque la historia tiene varios aspectos criticables al final puede ser algo distinta, si se hubiera hecho con un mejor estilo de animación hubiera sido un resultado mucho mejor.
