Neo Tokyo - Three Stories Each One Stranger Than The Last [ENG -ESP]
One thing that still never ceases to amaze me is how strange and even bizarre the stories in anime can be, especially in old anime where in addition to having a strange story and development, they combined it with that unique animation style of the last century, but that undoubtedly could become very strange at all times and made you question what kind of things the author thought or consumed. Neo Tokyo or in its original name Manie-Manie: Meikyuu Monogatari, is a very old anime film dating from 1987 and also has a special approach to deal with two completely independent and short stories. Probably from this movie the anime death love and robots was inspired to tell independent stories.
Practically everything in this movie is very strange, from the beginning you will be thinking about every moment that is happening and what you are seeing on screen, the whole story begins with a girl named Sachi who plays hide and seek with her cat, but soon everything seems to be a version of Alice in Wonderland when both are absorbed by a mirror and reach a strange dimension where a clown guides them among ghosts to the circus tent. Undoubtedly all very strange and practically without any sense.
Inside this circus is where the other two stories of this film happen or are shown to Sashi, neither of which is related to what we have seen before and since they are two short stories, they will not have any development or explanation of their background, they will simply show them directly and you will have to try to understand with what is shown. In addition, each story has a very different approach and aesthetics one from the other, even changing the way of animation of the characters that appear in it.
The first story is about a futuristic and deadly race, with a cyberpunk style where the animation and character design will be extremely detailed and somewhat exaggerated, with vehicles that are somewhat reminiscent of spaceships that go at high speed, so much so that the vehicles themselves as well as the body of the pilots can not withstand the speed and end up collapsing and exploding in the race, see how a famous pilot who has been a champion for a decade in a race where almost everyone dies in it, achieves a last victory at the cost of his own life. The amount of luminous and abstract scenes typical of space races are many and it achieves a contrast with the rest of the dark backgrounds, it reminded me a bit of Akira's style.
The second story has a more colorful and cartoonish style both in its color palette and character designs, creating a great contrast between the designs of the first characters both Sashi and the characters in the racing story, this second story has a peculiar approach but simpler to understand, on a planet quite complicated to explore and inhabit, a company is building a big city but due to the complicated to reach that part of the planet all the construction is being developed with robots and a single person in charge of everything, but she has stopped responding and now it is up to another employee to reach the work to see what happened and stop it by order of the company, although everything will be out of control because of a lunatic robot who does not want to obey new orders.

At the end each story has a slightly ambiguous ending that does not end to explain the story that in itself does not explain much either from its beginning, even after the two stories, we see how Sachi in the circus seems to make friends with various strange creatures that emerge from the shadows of the clown, no doubt a film that will make you think a lot about what you just saw and what is the meaning of things, it is curious these animes that with few dialogues and very strange scenes seek to tell a certain story, but they make you analyze very well each scene to try to understand it, there will always be strange animes but from time to time you can get one that will leave you thinking that you have just seen, Neo Tokyo is precisely one of them.

Una cosa que aun no deja de sorprenderme es lo extraño y hasta bizarro que pueden llegar a ser las historias en los animes, en especial en los animes antiguos en donde además de tener una historia y desarrollo extraño, lo combinaban con ese estilo de animación tan único del siglo pasado, pero que sin dudas podía llegar a resultar muy extraño en todo momento y te hacia cuestionar que tipo de cosas pensaba o consumía su autor. Neo Tokyo o en su nombre original Manie-Manie: Meikyuu Monogatari, se trata de una película de anime bastante antigua al datar del año 1987 y que además tiene un enfoque especial al tratar de dos historias totalmente independientes y cortas. Probablemente de esta película se inspiró el anime death love and robots para contar historias independientes.
Prácticamente todo en esta película es muy extraño, desde el inicio te quedaras pensando en cada momento que esta ocurriendo y que estas viendo en pantalla, toda la historia comienza con una niña llamada Sachi la cual juega con su gato a las escondidas, pero pronto todo parece ser una versión de Alicia en el país de las maravillas cuando ambos son absorbidos por un espejo y llegan a una extraña dimensión en donde un payaso los guía entre fantasmas hasta la carpa del circo. Sin dudas todo muy extraño y prácticamente sin ningún sentido.
En el interior de este circo es en donde suceden o se le muestran las otras dos historias de esta película a Sashi las cuales ninguna tiene relación con lo visto anteriormente y al tratarse de dos historias cortas tampoco tendrá nada de desarrollo o explicación del trasfondo de las mismas, simplemente las mostraran directamente y deberes tratar de entender con lo mostrado. Además, cada historia tiene un enfoque y estética muy diferente la una de la otra, cambiando incluso hasta la forma de animación de los personajes que aparecen en la misma.
La primera historia se trata de una carrera futurista y mortal, con un estilo ciberpunk en donde la animación y diseño de los personajes será extremadamente detallado y algo exagerado, con vehículos que recuerdan un poco a naves espaciales que van a gran velocidad, tanto que los mismos vehículos así como el cuerpo de los pilotos no resiste la velocidad y terminan colapsaron y explotando en la carrera, ver como un famoso piloto que lleva una década como campeón en una carrera en donde casi todos mueren en ella, logra una ultima victoria a costa de su propia vida. La cantidad escenas luminosas y abstractas típica de carreras espaciales son muchas y logra un contraste con el resto de los fondos oscuros, me recordó un poco al estilo de Akira.
La segunda historia tiene un estilo más colorida y caricaturesca tanto en su paleta de colores como en los diseños de los personajes, creando un gran contraste entre los diseños de los primeros personajes tanto el de Sashi como los personajes en la historia de carreras, esta segunda historia tiene un enfoque peculiar pero mas sencillo de entender, en un planeta bastante complicado de explorar y habitar, una compañía esta construyendo una gran ciudad pero debido a lo complicado para llegar hasta esa parte del planeta toda la construcción está desarrollándose con robots y una sola persona encargada de todo, pero ella ha dejado de responder y ahora le toca a otro empleado llegar hasta la obra para ver que sucedió y detener la misma por orden de la empresa, aunque todo estará en descontrol por culpa de un robot lunático que no quiere obedecer nuevas órdenes.

Al final cada historia tiene un final un poco ambiguo y que no termina de explicar la historia que de por si no se explica mucho tampoco de su inicio, incluso luego de las dos historias, vemos como Sachi en el circo parece hacerse amiga de varias criaturas raras que surgen de las sombras del payaso, sin dudas una película que te hará pensar mucho en que acabas de ver y en cual es el significado de las cosas, es curioso estos animes que con pocos diálogos y escenas muy extrañas buscan contar cierta historia, pero te hacen analizar muy bien cada escenas para tratar de entenderla, siempre existirán los animes extraños pero de vez en cuando puedes conseguir alguno que te dejara pensando que acabas de ver, Neo Tokyo es precisamente uno de ellos.
