SOMETHING LIKE GOLD // WORTH THE HYPE!?

Source
“Something Like Gold” is a perfect example of an overhyped movie!
A friend suggested I watch this and give my take on it afterward. While I had it on my to-watch list, the movie was so talked about nearly everywhere I turned on social media that it served as a constant reminder until I finally watched it.
And oh my! Y’all should be calming down with some of the hyping, please!
Truth is, most of the people hyping this movie will recklessly talk down on really great ones. Anyways, at the end of the day, it’s perception cum opinions, right?
SYNOPSES
Tamara Jola-Scott (Sandra Okunzuwa who doubles as Producer) is an overpampered, spoilt, rude and pompous daughter of millionaire businessman, Jolayemi Scott (Patrick Doyle).
Tamara believes that the world revolves around her and that the sun rises and sets at her feet.
Mean to everyone including her friends, she would then get the embarrassment and humiliation of her life on her wedding day when her rich dad is taken into Police custody, his properties and assets seized due to embezzlement of company funds.
Entrusted into the hands of Mayowa (Mercy Johnson), their former maid by her father, Tamara would then find herself in an opposite universe where life is completely different from her normal Princess-like bubble.
Having been abandoned by her fiancé, Demola (portrayed by Timini Egbuson), her supposed society wedding called off and learning to embrace a new life, Tamara would then meet different people including Tunde (played by Kunle Remi) as well as get a shocking realisation about her childhood and true identity causing her to question her existence reflecting on her behaviour.
MOVIE REVIEW
While this Romcom movie had potentials to be a big hit being that it had some of our faves in it even though the storyline is a familiar one, it however fails to deliver as it was neither here nor there in its approach to storytelling.
Firstly, the storyline, the plot, and the delivery felt all over the place. The title itself, I really can’t correlate with the movie. Please, which part of the movie portrayed “Something Like Gold?” I really really would like to know!
Secondly, the opening scene, which seemed really promising, in my opinion, made room for the disconnect in the movie, and personally, a void was left in my viewing eyes. How do you explain all that pandemonium?
Honestly, the only striking thing…like what really stands out for me, is Mercy Johnson’s character, which by the way was introduced disjointededly but later managed to clear out by way of flashback. Mercy Johnson took that role personally. She interpreted her part like her life depends on it.
The cinematography was equally cool, I’m not gonna lie! Best believe Kayode Kasum as Director to deliver in terms of sharp picture quality.
Although Kunle Remi and Teniola Aladese (as Yemisi) did great, Timini Egbuson’s was less impressive. Veteran actors like Patrick Doyle and Segun Arinze (who played Demola’s father) did not really do it for me. Possibly because they only featured sparingly.
Sandra Okunzuwa, being the lead character, over dramatised her role that it oozed of an over-exaggerated aura for the most parts of the movie. She really didn’t need to have done too much. What was all that shouting for?
Again, there was a disconnect for how Tamara had a turnaround after a period of self-reflection. The emotions really didn’t add up enough for the sudden change in behavior.
Overall, this movie is somewhat interesting but could have been better if it had given more careful thought and planning. It simply falls short to live up to expectations, leaving much to be desired.
All that said, I'll rate this movie a5.5/10.
I hope that this was interesting to read. Thanks for coming around.
I think I reviewed this film, or if not, at least I may have talked about. And clearly, you're using just as disappointing words as I used. How did she transform? Why didn't she make up with her old friends and why did she label them as fake when she was the one mean to them? What was Timini's essence in the film?? So many questions without given answers. I regretted the time spent seeing this film, and I'm glad you think so as well. Nicely done!
