Civil War - Review.
A few months ago the United States became a phenomenon with Alex Garland's latest movie, Civil War, and since it was recently released on platforms the fever for the movie has returned, and for me, who had not seen it, this fever has taken over my body and I decided to see the movie as soon as possible. Good decision, especially since I have some good speakers in the livingroom, because I already said it, the sound is half of the movie; the other half, well, everything else
Hace unos meses estados unidos se volvió un fenómeno con la última película de Alex Garland, Civil War, y como hace poco se estrenó en plataformas la fiebre por la película ha vuelto, y para mí, que no la había visto, esta fiebre se ha apoderado de mi cuerpo y decidí ver la película lo antes posible. Buena decisión, sobre todo porque tengo unas buenas cornetas en la sala, porque ya lo digo, el sonido es la mitad de la película; la otra mitad, bueno, todo lo demás.
It's not that the movie is bad, the movie delivers incredibly well. It's just that I feel it's a political critique that does nothing more than hit you in the face, like a child crying to get what he wants..., but just like the child, with so much noise and grimacing, in the end you get what he wants. And it is understandable that the U.S. has raised a red flag with the film, as it is a direct criticism of what can happen in the country.
No es que la película esta mala, la película cumple increíblemente. Es que siento que es una crítica política que no hace más que golpearte a la cara, cómo un niño que llora para obtener lo que quiere… pero justo cómo el niño, con tanto ruido y mueca, al final se entiende lo que quiere. Y es comprensible que Estados Unidos haya disparado una señal de alerta con la película, ya que es una crítica directa a lo que puede pasar en el país.
But then, what is Civil War about? This is, in addition to a criticism, a tribute to journalism, as it follows a group of war journalists who, in a fictional America divided into two sides, must travel across the country to interview the president before something happens to him. This leaves us then a road movie, as the protagonists are always on the road where they meet people or situations that create an incredible panic and despair, with emphasis on the appearance of Jesse Plemons with a character that does not last on screen more than ten minutes and still left me with goose bumps. Alex Garland has always been interesting to me, from "The beach" to "Ex-machina" or even "men", his films, whether directing or screenwriting, are a blast to watch, but with Civil War we are looking at a before and after, and I'm not exaggerating. One of the reasons why the film was mentioned so much is because it is A24's first big budget film, showing the direction the company wants to take from now on. That's not to say it's bad or good, just different, and, if nothing else, Civil War is a good calling card.
Pero entonces, ¿de qué va Civil War? Esta es, además de una crítica, un homenaje al periodismo, ya que sigue a un grupo de periodistas de guerra que, en una américa ficticia dividida en dos bandos, deberán recorrer todo el país para entrevistar al presidente antes de que le pase algo. Esto nos deja entonces una pelicula de camino, ya que los protagonistas van siempre en carretera dónde se encuentran a personas o situaciones que crean un pánico y una desesperación increíble, haciendo yo énfasis en la aparición de Jesse Plemons con un personaje que no dura en pantalla más de diez minutos y aun así me dejo la piel de gallina. Alex Garland siempre me ha parecido interesante, desde "la playa" hasta "ex-machina" o "men", sus películas, ya sea por dirección o por guion, son una pasada de ver, pero con Civil War estamos ante un antes y después, y no estoy exagerando. Una de las razones por las cuales la película fue tan mencionada es porque es la primera película de gran presupuesto de A24, mostrando así el rumbo que quiere tomar la productora a partir de ahora. Esto no quiere decir que sea malo o bueno, sino diferente, y, por lo menos, Civil War es una buena carta de presentación.
The sound design is worthy of an Oscar, and I have never heard such real gunshots in a movie, and here let me tell you that they are not few. This comes hand in hand with an almost null soundtrack, which I think is a magnificent success by Alex Garland to tell his story, which, in addition, is detached from the science fiction stories that usually shows in his films. Along with the sound design, the photography also seems to me to be a success, and it had to be, since part of the story focuses on the photographers, which creates both moral and ethical questions, making us reflect on how important reporters can be in situations like this.
El diseño de sonido es digno de Oscar, y es que nunca había escuchado disparos tan reales en una película, y aquí déjenme decirles que no son pocos. Esto viene de la mano con una banda sonora casi inexistente, lo cual me parece un acierto magnifico por Alex Garland para contar su historia, que, además, se despega de las historias de ciencia ficción que suele mostrar en sus películas. Junto al diseño de sonido, la fotografía me parece también un acierto, y tenía que serlo, ya que parte de la historia se centra en los fotógrafos, lo que crea preguntas tanto morales como éticas, haciéndonos reflexionar en lo importante que pueden ser los reporteros en situaciones así.
The movie is amazing and highly recommended, that's not denied, but what makes me turn away from it a bit is the fact that it's set in the United States, something that seems so implausible that it turns me off. Maybe I just don't know much about it and it's more of a latent problem than I have in mind, but for me, it's a situation as fantastical as Planet of the Apes. However, if I don't see it as a criticism but as a movie, it ends up being something magnificent wherever you look at it.
La película es increíble y altamente recomendable, eso no se niega, pero lo que me hace apartarme un poco de ella es el hecho de estar ambientada en Estados Unidos, algo que se me hace tan inverosímil que me desconecta. Tal vez justo de eso no sepa mucho y es un problema más latente del que tengo en mente, pero para mí, es una situación tan fantasiosa cómo la del planeta de los simios. Sin embargo, si no la veo como critica sino como película, esta termina siendo algo magnifico por dónde se le vea.

I think there are a lot of ways that they could have done this film better but it was still pretty decent. IT's worth a watch in my mind.
