Asteroid City (2023)- REVIEW - [ENGLISH-SPANISH]
One of director Wes Anderson's latest films, released in 2023, is Asteroid City, a film within a film within a show within a play, all set in an invented town in the middle of the desert in the 1950s. The film is coherent throughout, visually everything is symmetrical and well arranged, although the desert is new territory for this director and he knows how to take it very well to a retro American experience, there are diners, motels and even a huge crater made by an asteroid. In Asteroid City the Junior Stargazers convention is taking place, a group of bright young people presenting their science fair projects, Augie Steenbeck is a war photographer whose wife has died but he hasn't told his children and Midge Campbell is a movie star but she has her problems, these two lonely people meet and start to fall in love or something like that.

Jeffrey Wright plays a military man with more on his mind than we are led to believe and the group of child actors all give good performances, although Jake Ryan stands out as Augie's son Woodrow, who is in love with Johansson's daughter. But for me the best was Bryan Cranston who plays the role of a television presenter who narrates everything that happens. He has a weight that sustains the film even when things get quite strange. There are also Edward Norton and Adrien Brody who, although they only appear in the scenes shot in black and white, are interesting.

I quite liked Anderson's work with the plot and the visual effects, at times I felt completely immersed in the world he created, the last scene with the alien is great and I laughed a lot but at times I felt like I was just watching a pretty picture with not much going on or being said. I think Anderson took a risk and he pulled it off, it shows how we deal with our feelings through art, the characters in the film struggle with loss, fear and confusion, it's as if the director exposes our fears, but in a 1950s setting and includes aliens while he's at it.
Me ha gustado bastante el trabajo realizado por Anderson con la trama y los efectos visuales, a veces sentía que estaba completamente metida en el mundo que creó Anderson, la última escena en la que aparece el alienígena es buenísima y me reí demasiado pero en algunos momentos sentí como si solo estaba viendo una foto bonita sin mucho que hacer o decir en el fondo. The ending is one of those that leave you wondering what happened here, it shows how the characters in the play and the real lives of the actors in the television series are represented, how their worlds are mixed, it's a bit illogical but I think it wants to show that art and life are more connected than we imagine, in the end the actors say the phrase you can't wake up if you don't fall asleep and this makes sense, we lose ourselves in stories, in art, in being able to find ourselves in the world, I think Asteroid City is a surprising film, this director always goes above and beyond and shows his weirdest side, although it's not his best film, I liked it. Score 7.5/10.
