Heretic is a movie that got under my skin because it's not the typical horror movie, it's more of a psychological horror and religious debate, I think I was already afraid to go visit someone at their house because you meet every crazy person. The truth is that these two girls in the movie got into a lot of trouble and I do believe that these things happen in real life, a while ago I read a news item about a woman who had five husbands and she wanted a sixth one and when the man refused the other five husbands kidnapped him, they all ended up in jail because where else are they going to go but to jail for having someone kidnapped.

Heretic es una película que se me metió en la piel porque no es la típica película de terror es más un terror psicológico y de debate religioso, creo que ya me dio miedo ir a visitar a alguien a su casa porque uno se consigue con cada loco. Lo cierto es que estas dos muchachas de la película se metieron en un buen problema y yo sí creo que estas cosas pasan en la vida real, hace rato leí una noticia de una mujer que tenía cinco esposos y ella quería un sexto y como el hombre se negó lo secuestraron los otros cinco esposos, terminaron presos todos porque a donde más van a ir sino a la cárcel por tener a alguien secuestrado.

Mr. Reed, who looks quite charming, from the moment he opens the door of his house, which is quite secluded, I was quite suspicious and I said something is going to happen here. In Heretic there are no demons or possessions, the terror is about someone coming to tear down all your beliefs, it seems to me that the directors knew how to increase the tension without resorting to cheap tricks and that hooked me.

El Sr. Reed que se ve bastante encantador, desde el momento en que abre la puerta de su casa que está bien apartada me generó bastante desconfianza y dije aquí algo va a pasar. The plot seems simple two missionaries enter a house to talk about their faith and end up caught in a battle of wits and beliefs with the owner of the house, but it's the way the film is made that makes it seem so compelling. At first Mr. Reed seems curious about the subject but as the conversation progresses it becomes clear that he has other plans, he says he has studied many religions and believes he has found the one true faith and is determined to make the sisters see things his way whether they want to or not. Although this man tells them that they can leave whenever they want this is not so simple because the house is a labyrinth, the dead end itself, I think they wanted to show that beliefs can trap you even when you think you are making your own decision. I really don't understand why human beings always seek to be right, I am one of those people who believe that everyone can believe in whatever they want as long as it doesn't hurt anyone.

La trama parece sencilla dos misioneras entran en una casa para hablar de su fe y terminan atrapadas en una batalla de ingenio y creencias con el dueño de la casa, pero es la forma como está hecha la película que hace que parezca tan convincente. Al principio el Sr. Reed parece que tiene curiosidad sobre el tema pero a medida que avanza la conversación queda claro que tiene otros planes, él dice que ha estudiado muchas religiones y cree haber encontrado la única fe verdadera y está decidido a hacer que las hermanas vean las cosas a su manera, quieran o no. Hugh Grant is Mr. Reed, I was always hanging on every word and I was wondering if this guy has studied theology or what religion he is, in my opinion this role fits him well because he is quite convincing. Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East are the sisters Barnes and Paxton who have nothing to envy Grant's performance, Barnes is the more skeptical of the two and is always trying to find a way out and the other seems a bit more naive although she gets her act together when things get more desperate.

What I liked most about Heretic is that it doesn't make Mr. Reed a straight up bad person and the missionaries innocent victims, and although the plot is simple the film has quite a bit to discuss about faith, belief and how we come to believe in that. It's not often you see a horror movie that is basically a theological debate but I think it worked here, Reed says that all religions are nothing more than repetitions of ancient myths and uses games like Monopoly to Radiohead lyrics to defend his point. This made me think about where my beliefs come from and I think that many times it is imposed by society and family and when we grow up we choose our path, but if we are different from what the environment is used to sometimes they look at us funny. On the other hand, the fact that the house is dark and gloomy fits very well with the suspense and desperation in which these two women are involved.

Lo que más me gustó de Heretic es que no hace del Sr. Reed una persona mala de forma directa y de las misioneras unas víctimas inocentes, y aunque la trama es sencilla la película tiene bastante que discutir sobre la fe, las creencias y cómo llegamos a creer en eso. No es común ver una película de terror que sea básicamente un debate teológico pero pienso que aquí funcionó, Reed dice que todas las religiones no son más que repeticiones de mitos antiguos y utiliza juegos como el monopolio hasta letras de Radiohead para defender su punto. Esto me hizo pensar sobre de dónde vienen mis creencias y creo que muchas veces es impuesto por la sociedad y la familia y cuando vamos creciendo es que vamos escogiendo nuestro camino, pero si somos diferentes a lo que está acostumbrado el entorno a veces nos miran raro. Por otro lado el que la casa sea oscura y tenebrosa cuadra muy bien con el suspenso y la desesperación en la que están metidas estas dos mujeres.

The best part is the ending, just when you think you know what is going on, the movie takes a change and mixes reality with something more mystical and spiritual, the movie plays with the idea of miracles, Mr. Reed is always questioning this to the missionaries because for him they are just stories that people tell to reinforce their faith. The score I give Heretic is 7.5/10 because it is not the kind of horror that is based on gore or scares but on the fear that grows little by little as it questions your whole worldview and made me question and reflect on many things not only about faith but about those walls and mental hurdles that you put up because someone made you believe it was so, I came to wonder if my beliefs were a strength or a potential trap.
