Sony's latest attempt to expand its Spider-Man universe is Kraven the Hunter, and I basically didn't like this superhero movie that tries to be both a serious character study and an action-packed blockbuster, but it fails at both, although I must say it's not the disaster that was Madame Web, and serves as a good reminder of why these spin-offs without Spider-Man were doomed to failure from the start. The movie tries to reinvent Spider-Man's classic villain as an anti-hero, who protects animals, not hunts them, and this seems like a big departure from the comics to me. The interesting thing about this film is that it tries to mix several genres in one, which is family drama with lots of brutal fight scenes and also some environmental message. The violent action scenes make it look like an R-rated movie but the plot seems written for a much younger audience, and the movie never settles into a rhythm.

El último intento de Sony de expandir su universo Spider-Man es Kraven the Hunter, básicamente no me gustó esta película de superhéroes que intenta ser tanto un estudio serio de personajes como un éxito de taquilla lleno de acción, pero no lo consigue en ninguno de los dos, aunque debo decir que no es el desastre que fue Madame Web, y sirve como un buen recordatorio de por qué estos spin-offs sin Spider-Man estaban condenados al fracaso desde el principio. The story begins with young Sergei on a hunting trip in Ghana with his father, Russian crime boss Nikolai, and his younger brother Dmitri. Sergei has a nasty encounter with a lion that should have killed him, but he is saved by a mysterious girl called Calypso, who uses some kind of magic potion that gives him animal abilities. The movie moves on and Sergei is now an adult and runs around as Kraven, fighting poachers and criminals using his powers to stay away from his father's criminal empire. Aleksei Sytsevich, who becomes Rhino, starts to get out of control and kidnaps Dmitri. Now Kraven is forced to team up with Calypso, who is also an adult, to save his brother. Along the way, the character The Foreigner appears, bringing his own set of mysterious powers. All these characters and their backstories have to be developed in the story, as well as the themes of masculinity, family legacy, man and nature.

La historia comienza con el joven Sergei en un viaje de caza en Ghana con su padre, el jefe del crimen ruso Nikolai y su hermano menor Dmitri. Sergei tiene un desagradable encuentro con un león que debería haberlo matado, pero es salvado por una misteriosa chica llamada Calypso, que utiliza una especie de poción mágica que le da habilidades animales. Taylor-Johnson is Kraven, his action scenes are good especially when he jumps from building to building, the fight sequences are brutal and very well done, with some creative deaths that really justify the R rating. Russell Crowe with an exaggerated Russian accent that somehow works is Nikolai. I didn't find the rhinoceros threatening but Alessandro Nivola gives him a weirdness that seems entertaining. Christopher Abbott as The Foreigner is nice but his character is somewhat underused and the weak point is Ariana DeBose as Calypso, I don't think she was the best choice and she has no chemistry with Taylor-Johnson and this kills their scenes together.

It's hard not to feel some disappointment when talking about Kraven the Hunter, although Aaron Taylor Johnson has a certain physical presence for this role, the film is full of a serious identity crisis that makes it difficult to fully connect with it, most of the violence and gore seem like a forced marketing gimmick and not something natural to the story, and something that frustrates me is that the film never commits to its interesting premise about a hunter who becomes an animal protector, or the environmental message and the brutal action movie that it sometimes aspires to be. The family relationship between Sergei, Dmitri and their father Nikolai is good, but the script skips over these relationships to get to action sequences with lots of special effects that often seem like they will never end. I think the biggest problem with the movie is that it tries to be a serious study of toxic masculinity, while at the same time presenting scenes of Kraven running around biting people's noses off and in the end the change in tone of the movie prevents it from finding its balance.

In the final part, the film tries to tie up all the loose ends with a confusing mixture of action and unresolved plots. In the end, the final battle is chaotic, with Sergei facing both Rhino and The Foreigner. The dimly lit forest setting is where the fight takes place, and Kraven uses his animalistic abilities to take out Rhino's henchmen in increasingly violent ways. in that part the visual effects were very bad and it looked more like a video game, all this leads to that strange moment when Dmitri starts to turn into a chameleon and it seemed so forced to me as if they were trying to prepare a sequel that I don't think I'll ever see. The attempt at an emotional payoff with Sergei finally accepting his nature as a hunter while still trying to maintain his principles of animal protection is confusing and contradictory to everything the movie tried to say earlier about toxic masculinity. I found it a bit silly and out of place that Kraven put on his lion skin vest in the final scene while looking at himself in the mirror, as well as the last minute change with Calypso, which adds nothing to the story but confusion. The impression I got was that they couldn't decide if they wanted a dark and serious ending or something more traditional for a superhero movie, so they tried to throw everything at it and see what came out. I think if the movie had chosen a path and focused on that it might have worked, but it was rather confusing and disappointing. Score 5.5/10.

En la parte final la película intenta atar todos los cabos con una mezcla confusa de acción y tramas sin resolver en su final, la batalla final es caótica, con Sergei enfrentándose tanto a Rhino como The Foreigner, el escenario de bosque con poca luz es donde tiene lugar la pelea, Kraven utiliza sus habilidades animales para acabar con los secuaces de Rhino de formas cada vez más violentas, en esa parte los efectos visuales fueron muy malos y parecía más un videojuego, todo esto conduce a ese extraño momento en el que Dmitri empieza a convertirse en un camaleón y me pareció tan forzado como si estuvieran intentando preparar una secuela que creo que nunca veré.
