Moana 2 has impressive animation that includes water effects that almost make you feel like you're on the beach. The movie looks incredible. It's the continuation of Disney's 2016 hit with Moana and Maui, in another adventure across the ocean, but this time the journey seems less focused and more like a collection of linked episodes. Three years after the first movie, Moana has become an explorer who travels the ocean on her own, she has not met anyone during her travels, which is a problem for the future of her island Motunui. When her ancestors show her a vision of a cursed island called Motufetu, Moana discovers that this island was the ocean's connection to all the islands and villages in the ocean before the vengeful god Nalo hid it. If this curse is broken, the villages scattered throughout the ocean can be unified, bringing a future of prosperity to Motunui. So Moana gathers a team made up of an inventor called Loto, a warrior called Moni who is obsessed with Maui, a grumpy farmer called Kele, his pet pig Pua and a silly chicken called Heihei. The plot itself draws attention because it is very similar to the first movie, although it tries to expand the world, Moana leaves the island, encounters obstacles, finds Maui and fights against a powerful force of nature. The problem is that the stakes never seem as urgent or clear as in the original movie, however, Nalo the evil god barely appears in the movie, he only appears in a scene halfway through the credits that seems more like something for a third movie than a proper ending for this one. The visuals of the movie are impressive but the plot is incoherent; it's as if you were watching several episodes of a TV show instead of a single movie.

The biggest problem I have with Moana 2 is that it doesn't have the emotional core of the first movie. The themes of finding your true self and your place in the world are something that you can identify with and that's what made Moana good. This sequel tries to expand on those ideas by focusing on connection and community but it never reaches the emotional level it's aiming for. The songs are quite enjoyable in their own right, but none of them stuck in my head like How Far I'll Go and You're Welcome, the water effects are very good and among the best I've seen in an animated film, the beautiful images can only take a film so far if the story is weak and incoherent. The villain part of the movie is also frustrating, Nalo the god who cursed Motufetu and divided the ocean people is invisible until he makes his appearance in the mid-credits scene, the most exciting part of Moana 2 is when he finally reunites with his friend Maui and together they reach the island of Motufetu to face Nalo's curse in the form of a massive storm, by using their combined strength and the power of their connection they manage to raise the sunken island back to the surface, breaking the curse and creating a beacon for the scattered peoples of the ocean to find each other again, this part is visually beautiful, with swirling water and magical lighting effects but I still insist it doesn't have the emotional weight of the first one.

El mayor problema que tengo con Moana 2 es que no tiene ese centro emocional de la primera película, los temas de encontrar tu verdadero yo y tu lugar en el mundo es algo con lo que uno se identifica y es lo que hizo que Moana fuera buena, esta secuela intenta ampliar esas ideas centrándose e en la conexión y la comunidad pero nunca llega a esa parte emocional que intenta. Las canciones son bastante agradables en su momento, pero ninguna se me quedó grabada en la cabeza como pasó con How Far I'll Go y You're Welcome, los efectos de agua son muy buenos y de los mejores que he visto en una película de animación, las hermosas imágenes solo pueden llevar a una película hasta un nivel si la historia es débil e incoherente. Moana 2 is a visually impressive film that doesn't live up to the magic of the original, the water effects are impressive but that's not all there is to a film, especially when the story is incoherent and the emotional core that made the first film so special is missing, I hope that if Moana 3 is made it will be a better experience. Lo más extraño es que tras esta supuesta victoria la película termina con una escena a mitad de los créditos donde aparece Moana y a otros dioses malvados jurando vengarse de Moana, no es el final de la historia me parece que está abriendo paso para una tercera película o serie de televisión y le quita esa sensación de cierre que dio el final principal, el final intenta concluir con el tema de la conexión haciendo que Moana regrese a Motunui tras haber aprendido que había abierto la puerta para que su pueblo se reconectara con otros al otro lado del océano. Moana 2 es una película visualmente impresionante que no está a la altura de la magia de la original, los efectos del agua son impresionantes pero eso no es todo en una película menos cuando la historia no es coherente y el centro emocional que hizo que la primera película fuera tan especial ha desaparecido, espero que si llega a salir Moana 3 sea un mejor experiencia.
