Presence is the latest film by Steven Soderbergh, known for pushing the boundaries of cinema. It deals a lot with the haunted house genre and has a rather particular approach, although the results are not always that good. The plot of this film is told through the perspective of a ghost who inhabits a house that a dysfunctional family buys. the camera becomes the ghost moving through the rooms and observing what the family does on a daily basis, this can be intriguing but at a certain point it is boring, the film is not based on the typical haunted house scares but rather creates tension through the family's daily life and the slow revelation of their secrets, which makes it more psychological than terrifying.

Presence es la última película de Steven Soderbergh conocido por traspasar los límites del cine, aborda mucho el género de las casas encantadas y tiene un enfoque bastante particular, aunque los resultados no siempre son tan buenos, la trama de esta película es contada a través de la perspectiva de un fantasma que habita en una casa que una familia disfuncional compra, la cámara se convierte en el fantasma moviéndose por las habitaciones y observando lo que hace la familia a diario, esto puede ser intrigante pero en un punto es aburrido, la película no se basa en los típicos sustos de la casa encantada sino que crea tensión a través del día a día de la familia y la lenta revelación de sus secretos, lo que hace que sea algo más más psicológico que aterrador.

The film begins with the camera exploring an empty house before a real estate agent called Cece arrives to show the property to the Payne family, made up of Rebecca, a very demanding executive who makes quick decisions, her kind husband Chris, her arrogant son Tyler and her sad daughter Chloe who is still processing the recent death of her best friend, Nadia, from a drug overdose, it is clear that Rebecca has a preference for Tyler, who has an attitude problem, while Chris is more concerned with Chloe's emotional well-being. From the moment they enter the house, Chloe seems to feel a presence looking directly at the camera as if she could sense something that the others cannot, the family buys the house and moves in and from that moment strange things start to happen, objects move, shelves fall and a sharp noise echoes against a mirror, convincing Chloe more and more that there is a spirit in the house and she thinks it has something to do with her friend who died, but the rest of the family pays no attention to her. The ghost keeps a close eye on Chloe, especially when Tyler's friend Ryan starts to visit without his knowledge, and as the story progresses it becomes apparent that Rebecca may be involved in some shady business dealings. The relationship between Chloe and Ryan takes a worrying turn with the increasingly obsessed presence trying to protect her.

Lucy Liu plays Rebecca, an intimidating and scheming woman whose maternal instinct is not very apparent, but it is clear that she prefers her son to her daughter. Chris Sullivan is Chris, a father increasingly frustrated by his wife's behavior and concerned about his daughter's mental health. Eddy Maday is Tyler, a model and evil athlete, as the story progresses his character becomes more complex and he becomes the most interesting member of the family. Callina Liang as Chloe always sees his suffering and the way she feels the presence seems natural and West Mulholland is Ryan.

I think that on the one hand this first-person view of the ghost is unique and raises concerns about the way it invades the family's private moments, but on the other hand the concept sometimes seems more of a technical exercise and not something necessary, that is to say, perhaps it would have worked better with a traditional approach. The pace is very slow, the scenes of family life seem endless except for a few moments when something supernatural happens, but the truth does not come across as terrifying. What I did like was the way the film uses the supernatural elements to show human themes such as pain, family dysfunction, the secrets we keep from each other and the ways in which we fail to protect the weakest, you can tell that the ghost is not there to frighten the family but to protect Chloe, which is a different take on the haunted house concept.

Opino que por un lado esa visión del fantasma en primera persona es algo único y da como preocupación la forma como invade los momentos privados de la familia pero por otro lado el concepto a veces parece más un ejercicio técnico y no algo necesario, es decir quizás hubiese funcionado mejor con un enfoque tradicional, el ritmo es muy lento, las escenas de la vida familiar se hacen eternas salvo por algunos momentos donde pasa algo sobrenatural pero la verdad no llega a ser aterrador. Lo que sí me gustó fue la forma en que la película utiliza los elementos sobrenaturales para mostrar temas humanos como el dolor, la disfunción familiar, los secretos que nos guardamos unos a otros y las formas en que no protegemos a los más débiles, se nota que el fantasma no está ahí para asustar a la familia sino para proteger a Chloe lo que es una visión diferente del concepto de la casa encantada.

Throughout the film we see that the ghost becomes increasingly stronger in its attempt to protect Chloe, especially from Ryan who turns out to be bad, in the final part the ghost intervenes to save Chloe from harm and reveals itself as the spirit of her friend Nadia, the revelation that the ghost is not there to torment but to protect can be somewhat moving about the bonds of friendship can transcend death, moreover the whole story of the ghost is a journey of self-discovery, of learning his purpose and of looking for a way to fulfill that purpose despite being locked up in the house. I think the movie shows a bit of what grief and the healing process are like, all mixed in with the supernatural stuff, the concerns about morality, responsibility and protection, although the ending has a good focus I thought it was a bit dramatic and kind of sudden, like they didn't find a way to tie everything together in a natural way. Presence is not a traditional horror movie, as it doesn't have the scares you expect, but neither is it a family drama as the supernatural elements are sometimes in the middle of the story. For me, this movie didn't work. Score 6/10.

A lo largo de la película vemos que el fantasma se vuelve cada vez más fuerte en su intento de proteger a Chloe especialmente de Ryan que resulta tener malas, en la parte final el fantasma interviene para salvar a Chloe de cualquier daño y se revela como el espíritu de su amiga Nadia, la revelación de que el fantasma no está ahí para atormentar sino para proteger puede ser algo conmovedor sobre los lazos de amistad pueden traspasar la muerte, además toda la historia del fantasma es un viaje de autodescubrimiento, de aprendizaje de su propósito y de buscar la forma de cumplir ese propósito a pesar de estar encerrado en la casa. Creo que la película muestra un poco como es el duelo y el proceso de sanación, todo mezclado con las cosas sobrenaturales, las preocupaciones sobre la moralidad, la responsabilidad y la protección, aunque el final tiene un buen enfoque me pareció algo dramático y como de golpe, como que no encontraron la forma de unir todo de manera natural. Presence no es una película de terror tradicional, ya que no tiene los sustos que uno espera pero tampoco es un drama familiar ya que los elementos sobrenaturales a veces están en el medio de la historia, para mí esta película no resultó bien. Puntuación 6/10.
