The Brothers Sun is the latest Netflix action comedy drama created by the same creator of Glee, Brad Falchuk. Away from the hubbub of Taipe, Bruce Sun is a highschool student living an average asian-american life with her nurse mother, Eileen who is trying to make ends meet. Bruce is an aspiring improv and it is his ultimate dream to become a famous improv artist and has a nice crib along with a sexy lamborghini. His mother, much like a typical asian-immigrant in the US, wanted Bruce to become a doctor. While it might seem like that is the only conflict they might have, an ugly truth is waiting for Bruce to be revealed.

Far in the eastern world, Charles Sun is a ruthless man who has earned his own reputation to be the most feared renowned gangster under his father’s wing, the crime lord of Taiwan. While Charles was baking, a few assassins were going to his house and were about to kill him. It draws the attention of his father, who is known as Big Sun. Inside Charle’s penthouse, Big sun was shot and pronounced coma. As the big brother, he was bound to protect his family. He immediately travels to LA to meet and protect his mother and mother, Elieen and Bruce.

Growing up in different circumstances, it creates an intriguing dynamic between the two brothers. One is a known for feared assassin living a lavish lifestyle, and a part of a triad, another is only a highschool boy living an average life. Paired with more supporting characters such as TK (John Lee) and the beautiful Highdee Kuan as Alexis, together they try to figure out the truest meaning of family and their dreams.

Having Michelle Yeoh as one of the main characters, makes this series quite memorable. Yeoh has that charisma and intriguing intimidating tone while she talks. She makes the perfect role as the Triad’s queen and her stern look is pretty iconic. Like in Crazy Rich Asians, in this series, she also plays mahjong and gossips with the other asian ladies while gathering intel. It might look like her gathering is something of a waste of time but these asian ladies are way better than the FBI. They know everything.

While I personally don’t know the rest of the cast, It was Justin Chien that caught my attention the most. To be honest, he should star in one of Crazy Rich Asians type of dramas. He got that look and aura that could make him as par as Nick Young(Henry Goulding). Even better if the Crazy Rich Asians was something like Triad Rich Asians.

Sam Song Li who plays as Bruce is definitely successful in portraying the role of regular asian-american who also hustles as well as portraying the child with unconventional dreams and wishes to go against their parents. As a member of the triad, Bruce is far from the ruthless image but he has his own unique ways to show that he’s part of the Sun’s family.

Shot in Taipei as well as LA, it was quite an intriguing contrast. When in LA, there are yellow hues and mellowed lighting which creates a warm ambience. Though the cinematography is pretty much like narcos or even crime-related movies, it still supports its comedic elements throughout the scenes.

Last but not least, if you are a fan of Michael Yeoh, this is one of her best series/movies that she ever starred in. Though it’s giving Crazy Rich Asians vibes, the fights, the guns and the gore scenes, will certainly differ from the lovey-dovey Crazy Rich Asians. This series is an experience itself. I am certainly patiently waiting for the next season to come out. We need more Justin Chiang and Michael Yeoh!
