Pompoko (The raccoon war) Review ESP/ENG

Today it was Pompoko's turn, or as we know it in English “The Raccoon War” is another of Ghibli's films, but the one I like the most, since through my cinematographic journey through the films of this studio I have discovered that not all of them are to my liking, but this is one of the ones I appreciate the most, especially because it is customary in several of the films of this company, involving elements of Japanese folklore, such as tanuki (a kind of dog / raccoon) to which is attributed the ability to metamorphose at will. Something I found extremely interesting.
Hoy le tocó el turno a Pompoko, o como la conocemos en español "La guerra de los mapaches" es otra de las películas de Ghibli, pero las que más me gustan, ya que a través de mi recorrido cinematográfico por las películas de este estudio he descubierto que no todas son de mi agrado, pero esta es de las que más aprecio, sobre todo porque ya es costumbre en varios de los films de esta compañía, involucran elementos del folclore japonés, como lo son los tanukis (una especie de perro/mapache) a los que se les atribuye la capacidad de metamorfosearse a voluntad. Algo que me pareció sumamente interesante.
Overview/Resumen
The film begins with a war between raccoons (they are called Tanuki but they are Tanukis) they fight each other for territory and resources, until the older ones make the younger ones understand a reality that was before their eyes and that little by little was advancing almost without them realizing it: the real enemies were the humans, whose accelerated progress and development was leaving nature without space, their urban complexes were beautiful, but little by little they were making the raccoon populations were displaced, for this reason they decide to organize and create a plan in which, using their transfiguration skills, they would mingle among humans to cause chaos and thus make them desist from continuing with the development that had caused so much damage to forests and other green areas.
La película inicia con una guerra entre mapaches (se les llama así pero son Tanukis) ellos luchan entre sí por territorio y por recursos, hasta que los más ancianos les hacen entender a los más jóvenes una realidad que estaba ante sus ojos y que poco a poco iba avanzando casi sin que se dieran cuenta: los verdaderos enemigos eran los seres humanos, cuyo acelerado progreso y desarrollo estaba dejando a la naturaleza sin espacios, sus complejos urbanísticos eran hermosos, pero poco a poco fueron haciendo que las poblaciones de mapaches quedaran desplazados, por esta razón deciden organizarse y crear un plan en el que, valiéndose de sus habilidades de transfiguración, se mezclarían entre los humanos para causar el caos y de esta manera hacer que desistan de continuar con el desarrollo que tanto perjuicio les había causado a los bosques y demás areas verdes.

My Opinion/Mi Opinión
I loved this movie, I found it very dynamic, it has a perfect rhythm, it is not too slow and the important events do not happen too fast. I loved the concept of the Tanukis as that may explain the fact that the “raccoons” can transform, they are not ordinary raccoons, they are practically yokais. I also really enjoyed the transformation process, which is evidence that it was not a quick process and much less easy, everyone had to practice and work hard to achieve it and some did not get to achieve it, even so, they were all useful from their positions, in that declared and clandestine war against humans.
Amé esta película, me pareció muy dinámica, tiene un ritmo perfecto, no es demasiado lenta ni tampoco los hechos importantes suceden con demasiada celeridad . Amé el concepto de los Tanukis ya que eso puede explicar el hecho de que los "mapaches" puedan transformarse, no son mapaches comunes, son prácticamente yokais. Además disfruté mucho el proceso de transformación, lo cual evidencia que no fue un proceso rápido y mucho menos fácil, todos debieron practicar y trabajar duro para lograrlo y algunos no llegaban a conseguirlo, aún así, todos fueron útiles desde sus posiciones, en esa guerra declarada y clandestina contra los humanos.
The scenes I enjoyed the most were those where the raccoons scared the humans, especially one in particular, seriously, even I was scared. And it is a policeman who sees a supposed woman on the street squatting and crying, and when he tries to find out what's wrong he discovers that the woman in question has no face so the man runs away terrified, but when he gets to the police station the same thing happens, none of the policemen has a face and neither do those in a store where he goes on the run, that is, all that turns into a terrible nightmare for humans, why? Because the raccoons, or rather, the Tanukis, know that the human being is gullible by nature and therefore is vulnerable in this sense, everything he does not know disconcerts him and in the end ends up terrifying him.
Las escenas que más disfruté fueron esas donde los mapaches asustaban a los humanos, sobre todo una en particular, en serio, hasta a mi me dio miedo. Y es que policía que por la calle ve a una supuesta mujer que está en cuclillas llorando, y al intentar averiguar qué le pasa descubre que la mujer en cuestión no tiene rostro así que el hombre sale corriendo aterrorizado, pero al llegar a la estación de policía sucede lo mismo, ninguno de los policías tiene rostro y tampoco los que están en una tienda a la que él va en su huida, es decir, que todo aquello se vuelve en una terrible pesadilla para los humanos ¿por qué? porque los mapaches, o mejor dicho, los Tanukis, saben que el ser humano es crédulo por naturaleza y por ende es vulnerable en este sentido, todo lo que desconoce lo desconcierta y al final termina aterrorizándolo.
Now, let's go back to the initial issue why raccoons attack humans, it is not progress as such that bothers them, but that in their eagerness to grow humans take the territory of animals and also use many more resources than nature could regenerate in a short time. However, raccoons sometimes get out of hand, do not measure consequences and end up killing people, as when some trucks and machinery slid down ravines. I honestly believe, without being wrong, that this is Ghibli's most ecological film.
Ahora bien, volvamos al tema inicial por el cual los mapaches atacan a los humanos, no es el progreso como tal lo que les molesta, sino que en su afán por crecer los humanos toman el territorio de los animales y además utilizan muchos más recursos de los que podría regenerar la naturaleza en poco tiempo. No obstante a los mapaches a veces se les va la mano, no miden consecuencias y terminan hasta asesinando personas, como cuando algunos camiones y maquinaria se deslizaron por barrancos. Creo honestamente y sin llegar a equivocarme que esta es la película más ecológica de Ghibli
It is also, and although it may not seem so due to its aesthetics, one of the films with a more adult concept, not only because of everything I have already explained above, but also because there are many adult references or that at least could be a little incomprehensible to children, such as when explaining the mating process between raccoons, the season they use for that and how they are organized within the community.
Es además, y aunque no lo parezca debido a su estética, una de las películas con un concepto más adulto, no solo por todo lo que ya expuse anteriormente, sino porque hay muchas referencias adultas o que al menos podrían resultar un poco incomprensibles para los niños, como por ejemplo cuando se explica el proceso de apareamiento entre mapaches, la temporada que usan para eso y como se organizan dentro de la comunidad.

¡Qué análisis tan completo y apasionado de Pompoko! Es una película fascinante y, como mencionas, una de las más ecológicas de Ghibli. Su mensaje sobre la lucha entre el desarrollo humano y la naturaleza es poderoso, y la manera en que los tanukis usan su folclore y habilidades para resistir es muy original.
También es cierto que, a pesar de su apariencia caricaturesca, Pompoko tiene un trasfondo muy maduro. La forma en que muestra la desesperación de los tanukis por conservar su hogar, sus intentos fallidos y la eventual resignación es bastante cruda. Y la escena del "terror" que mencionas, con los humanos siendo engañados por las ilusiones, es impactante y memorable.
Es curioso cómo Ghibli logra combinar estos temas adultos con un diseño visual que podría parecer infantil, pero que en realidad esconde una historia profunda y con múltiples capas.
Me alegra mucho que te haya gustado mi análisis, es que el film fue tan bueno que merecía que le dedicara tiempo. La narrativa es maravillosa y pese a la estética nos damos cuenta de que tiene mucha profundidad, es fascinante como Ghibli puede hacer esa combinación, tal como dices, de la estética con profundidad de sus temas, temas por demás interesantísimos y que están tan vigentes hoy en día, como eso del uso indiscriminado de los recursos naturales.
hahaha the name of this story made me laugh 😂😂, the raccoons are one of my favorite animals hahaha they are very tremendous and I am very attracted to their eye spots as if they were thieves hahaha
About studio Ghibli I still need to see more to evaluate its quality in different movies but what is clear to me is its seal, it has an authentic way of transmitting an idea, I have noticed the folklore and that encourages me to see why it implements it in a funny visual way keeping that idea of the legend, I hope in this case to see that because I have noticed the influence of the Tanukis over there in Japan without knowing that the change is attributed to them, what peculiar trait they have transmitted to this little animal that I don't see it at all related to that 😅
This movie calls me to see it haha, as soon as I saw the thumbnail I clicked haha now with more detail of what it offers that is not purely childish, if not also leaves scenes of adult topical that I value it because at first glance they seemed cuddly and nothing more haha but there is much more within the story to know 🤗
Te la recomiendo de todo corazón, seguramente te gustará, yo también creía que manejaba un tema muy infantil y Vaya sorpresa que me llevé 😄. Amo la forma en la que el estudio siempre mezcla elementos muy folckloricos con un matiz más moderno, como una mezcla entre realidad y fantasía, es sencillamente fascinante.
