The Black Phone [Movie Review] (ESP/ENG)
In the search for a good thriller or horror movie on Netflix (because I was still not giving up hope of finding any) I came across The Black Telephone, a 2022 movie that is an adaptation of the short story of the same name written by Joe Hill, and Wow that extending a short story is not an easy task, but without further ado I'll leave you with the summary and my personal opinion about this film.
En la búsqueda de una buena película de suspenso o terror en Netflix (porque aún no perdía las esperanzas de hallar alguna) me encontré con El Telefono Negro, una película del 2022 que es una adaptación del relato corto del mismo nombre escrito por Joe Hill, y Vaya que extender un relato corto no es una tarea sencilla, pero sin más preámbulo los dejaré con el resumen y mi opinión personal acerca de este film.
Overview/Resumen
The film shows us a couple of children who live with an alcoholic and apparently depressed father after the death of his wife, the father constantly tries to repress the girl who shows signs of being clairvoyant, like her mother, as she has dreams with very important images of reality, which indicate places or people of interest. A series of strange disappearances of children are occurring in the city, and the police believe that the girl could be of help. At some point, the girl's brother, Finney, is also kidnapped by a maniac, and realizes that he is locked in a kind of bunker where he only has a mattress and a black phone that does not work, however he realizes that somehow begins to receive strange calls from previous victims, which give him instructions that could be crucial for his survival and even a possible escape.
La película nos muestra a un par de niños que viven con un padre alcohólico y aparentemente depresivo tras la muerte de su esposa, el padre constantemente intenta reprimir a la niña la cual muestra indicios de ser vidente, al igual que su madre, pues tiene sueños con imágenes muy importantes de la realidad, que le indican lugares o personas de interés. En la ciudad están ocurriendo una serie de extrañas desapariciones de chicos, y la policía cree que la niña podría ser de ayuda. En algún momento, el hermano de esa niña, Finney, también es secuestrado por un maniático, y se da cuenta que está encerrado en una especie de bunker donde solo tiene un colchón y un telefono negro que no funciona, sin embargo él se da cuenta que de alguna manera comienza a recibir extrañas llamadas por parte de las víctimas anteriores, las cuales le dan instrucciones que podrían ser cruciales para su supervivencia e incluso un posible escape.

My Opinion/Mi Opinión
I loved everything about this movie, the premise was very well executed, the story was presented in a credible way because although some people might find this absurd, it is true that many cases have been solved, or at least have obtained many answers thanks to people who are very sensitive. On the other hand I don't know if this movie can fit or not in the horror genre, beyond the suspense, because certainly what I like most about it is what differentiates it from the others, here the ghosts are not seen by the protagonist as a threat, although they are presented on screen under a dark aura and even grotesque in some scenes, this only reveals the brutality of the kidnapper and murderer, which reinforces that very popular saying that says “Do not fear the dead, it is the living that you should fear”.
Me encantó todo de esta película, la premisa estuvo muy bien ejecutada, la historia la plantearon de una forma creíble porque aunque a algunas personas esto podría resultarle absurdo, es cierto que muchos casos se han resuelto, o al menos han obtenido muchas respuestas gracias a personas que son muy sensitivas. Por otra parte no sé si esta peli pueda encajar o no en el genero de terror, más allá del suspenso, porque ciertamente lo que más me agrada de ella es lo que la diferencia de las demás, aquí los fantasmas no son vistos por el protagonista como una amenaza, si bien son presentados en pantalla bajo un aura oscura y de una forma hasta grotesca en algunas escenas, esto solo revela la brutalidad del secuestrador y asesino, lo cual refuerza ese dicho muy popular que reza "No temas a los muertos, es a los vivos a quienes debes temer"
Ethan Hawke's performance as “The Grabber” is superb, he is truly scary even without resorting to facial expressions (which is very important for an actor) as he wears a mask most of the time, it is his voice and his passive-aggressive attitude that makes him intimidating, unpredictable and? simply terrifying, but for the simple fact that what he does, many unscrupulous people did, are doing and will continue to do in real life. He is a tangible, heartless villain and above all, he could be anyone, even from your neighborhood.
La actuación de Ethan Hawke como "The grabber" (el captor) es excelsa, de verdad da miedo aún sin recurrir a expresiones faciales (lo cual es muy importante para un actor) ya que él lleva una mascara la mayor parte del tiempo, es su voz y su actitud pasivo- agresiva la que lo lleva a ser intimidante, es impredecible y... sencillamente aterrador, pero por el simple hecho de que lo que él hace, lo hicieron, lo están haciendo y lo seguirán haciendo muchas personas inescrupulosas en la vida real. Él es un villano tangible, desalmado y sobre todo, podría ser cualquier persona, incluso de tu vecindario.
I loved the character development, for example Gwen (the seer girl) began to gain more confidence in her visions, each time she took more risks until she found answers, Finney also gained confidence in himself and decided not to be a victim anymore, while Terrence (the father) began to understand his children, the fact of having almost lost Finney led him to question himself, realizing that isolating himself and acting violently was not the best way to educate them.
Amé el desarrollo de personaje, por ejemplo Gwen (la niña vidente) comenzó a adquirir más confianza en sus visiones, cada vez se arriesgaba más hasta hallar respuestas, Finney por su parte también adquirió confianza en sí mismo y decidió de forma tajante no ser una victima más, mientras que Terrence (el padre) pasó a comprender a sus hijos, el hecho de casi haber perdido a Finney lo llevó a cuestionarse, comprendiendo que aislarse y actuar con violencia no era la mejor manera de educarlos.
The cinematography is gloomy, but it is what is expected of this type of film, especially in moments of anguish, uncertainty or panic of the main character, the dark or blurry filters help to reinforce the sinister aura of the situation in which he finds himself, therefore, the audience's experience is much more immersive.
La fotografía es penumbrosa, pero es lo que se espera de este tipo de películas, sobre todo en los momentos de angustia, incertidumbre o pánico del personaje principal, los filtros oscuros o borrosos ayudan a reforzar el aura siniestra de la situación en la cuál él se encuentra, por lo tanto, la experiencia de la audiencia es mucho más inmersiva.
The ending, for me, was great, as I haven't seen one of these in a long time, because lately an inconclusive ending, without closure or leaving the audience with a feeling of emptiness, seemed to be the best option for writers and producers, and that's why I had stopped watching more recent movies.
El final, para mi estuvo grandioso, como hace mucho tiempo no veía uno de estos, porque últimamente un final inconcluso, sin cierre o que dejara a la audiencia con una sensación de vacío, parecía ser la mejor opción para los escritores y productores, y es por esa razón que ya yo había dejado de ver películas más recientes.
