Synopsis
Hogarth Hughes is a little boy who lives in Maine, USA. In the year 1957 the world was going through the Cold War and the Soviet Union was launching artificial satellites. One day Hogarth was walking through the woods when out of nowhere he finds a huge iron giant. It is a great shock for him, even more so when he notices that the giant can communicate but does not remember where he comes from.
Still, Hogarth befriends the Giant who is very curious and peaceful, but of course this would not be well received by everyone...
Perhaps the reason why this film went unnoticed is because despite being for kids, the truth is that it has a shocking message that many may consider unsuitable for children. The story poses deep moral dilemmas, those that adults have not been able to resolve, such as the use of weapons, politics, tolerance and death.
Some may argue that these are not topics for children, but I believe that not only should they be dealt with in this type of stories but that they carry a good message, as difficult as it may seem. The Iron Giant deals with these issues not from an arbitrary perspective but by posing them as social problems that no matter how old you are, you will always be affected by what happens in the world, to a greater or lesser extent. What happens outside has a direct influence on you, on your development and on your mind.
However, the story is so well constructed that it does not frame these issues in a boring and serious way, but rather it took care to create jovial characters that would explain the message in a subtle but understandable, as well as entertaining way. These messages must be transmitted in this way, not directly but understandable enough to plant an idea that would later germinate according to a certain criteria, when the child grows up.
I was that little girl. It is unthinkable that at 7 or 8 years old I understood the message perfectly, on the contrary, I only saw pleasant characters living their adventures, but later on I realized how incredibly deep everything really was.
But I insist, that was the idea, which was perfectly achieved. The characters are the perfect tool to achieve this since they are endearing, especially the great and gentle giant who looked at the world through the eyes of a tourist, who discovers everything for the first time. He gradually learns human nature, the way things work, he sees the good things but also the terribly bad ones, although his friend Hogarth also took it upon himself, from his childlike innocence, to show him that in the end the good is more important.
We clearly see how the external influences our behavior, as well as our own nature. Humanity is such a complex phenomenon that it is difficult even for a machine to understand. One of the most complicated aspects is death, that issue so feared to face, even more so in a war context. The truth is that it is inevitable, it will come at any moment for absolutely everyone.
In this film, the crux of the matter is that, on limited occasions, some can choose how to leave, and ask yourself: If you could, would you choose to die for a greater good? It's not like it's an easy decision to make, but there are people so altruistic, so selfless that they are capable of giving everything to protect a greater good, something bigger than their own lives.
We also see how difficult it is to let someone else go, the mourning for a loved one that at the moment can feel like agony, but eventually it passes and you learn to live with that pain but also with the memory of how beautiful it was. It's those life lessons that make this film an incredibly moving story. As a child I cried because the Giant simply died, but as an adult I understand it better and that makes it even sadder. He died understanding that it was a noble, necessary sacrifice.
It is at this point that we see a bit of the psychology of the hero, someone who is willing to sacrifice himself to protect others. The Giant learns this from Hogarth's idol, Superman, and although it is an obviously fictional role model, the truth is that by presenting a character who does not have the same characteristics as Superman but who can be just as noble and brave, he can also become a hero.
It does not matter the context in which you find yourself, it does not matter the way in which you were born, in the end you have something inside you, in your own abilities that you can use to do good, that you can use to change the course of things, to decide and assert yourself. This film teaches us that you can make the changes that are necessary to achieve a better life. It is up to you to make that decision and face it.
For me, this film is a treasure of animated children's cinema. It is exciting, entertaining and has powerful messages that are valuable to anyone. It should also be noted that for a low budget and the time in which it was made, the animation is fluid, quite well done and has a striking style.
For those who have seen it, it will surely bring back as much nostalgia as it did for me because it is a very moving story that makes more than one person cry, but it is worth watching it even more than once...

El Gigante de Hierro es una película infantil animada de 1999, producida por Warner Bros. Por algún motivo esta película pasó bastante desapercibida para el público general, no fue tan llamativa en su época.
Sin embargo, de pequeña en algún canal de televisión que no recuerdo la encontré y se convirtió en una de mis favoritas, por lo que les comentaré mi opinión con spoilers
Sinopsis
Hogarth Hughes es un niño pequeño que vive en Maine, Estados Unidos. En el año 1957 el mundo atravesaba la Guerra Fría y la Unión Soviética lanzaba satélites artificiales. Un día Hogarth estaba caminando por el bosque cuando de la nada encuentra un enorme gigante de hierro. Es un gran shock, más aún cuando nota que el gigante puede comunicarse pero no recuerda de dónde viene.
Aún así, Hogarth se hace amigo del Gigante que es muy curioso y pacífico, pero por supuesto esto no sería bien visto por todos...
Quizá el motivo por el que esta película haya pasado desapercibida es porque a pesar de ser infantil lo cierto es que tiene un mensaje impactante que puede que muchos consideren no apto para niños. La historia plantea dilemas morales profundos, de esos que los adultos no han podido resolver, como el uso de armas, la política, la tolerancia y la muerte.
Algunos pueden argumentar que no son temas para niños, pero considero que no solo deberían tratarse en este tipo de historias sino que llevan a un buen mensaje, por difícil que parezca. El Gigante de Hierro trata estos asuntos no desde una perspectiva arbitraria sino planteándolo como problemas sociales que no importa la edad que tengas, siempre serás afectado por lo que ocurre en el mundo, en mayor o menor medida. Lo que sucede en el exterior tiene una influencia directa en ti, en tu desarrollo y en tu mente.
Sin embargo, la historia está tan bien construída que no plantea estos temas de manera aburrida y seria, sino que se encargó de crear personajes joviales que explicarían el mensaje de manera sutil pero entendible, así como entretenida. Esos mensajes deben transmitirse así, no directos sino lo suficientemente comprensibles para sembrar una idea que más adelante germinaría según un cierto criterio, cuando el niño crezca.
Yo fui esa niña. Es impensable que a los 7 u 8 años yo entendiera perfectamente el mensaje, al contrario, solo veía personajes agradables viviendo sus aventuras, pero luego me di cuenta de lo increíblemente profundo que realmente era todo.
Pero insisto, esa era la idea lo cual se logró perfectamente. Los personajes son la herramienta perfecta para lograrlo puesto que son entrañables, sobretodo el gran y gentil gigante que miraba el mundo desde los ojos del turista, del que descubre todo por primera vez. Él poco a poco va aprendiendo la naturaleza humana, la forma en la que funcionan las cosas, ve las cosas buenas pero también las terriblemente malas, aunque su amigo Hogarth se encargó también desde su inocencia infantil demostrarle que al final lo bueno tiene mayor importancia.
Vemos claramente cómo lo externo influye en nuestro comportamiento, así como también nuestra propia naturaleza. La humanidad es un fenómeno tan complejo que incluso para una máquina es difícil de entender. Uno de los aspectos más complicados es la muerte, esa cuestión tan temida de afrontar, aún más en un contexto bélico. Lo cierto es que es inevitable, llegará en cualquier momento para absolutamente todos.
En este film el meollo del asunto es que en ocasiones limitadas algunos pueden escoger cómo partir, y es que plantéatelo tu mismo: Si pudieras, ¿elegirías morir por un bien mayor?. No es como que sea una decisión fácil, pero existen personas tan altruistas, tan desinteresadas que son capaces de entregarlo todo por proteger un bien mayor, algo más grande que sus propias vidas.
También vemos lo difícil que es dejar ir a alguien más, el luto por un ser querido que en el momento puede sentirse como una agonía, pero finalmente pasa y aprendes a vivir con ese dolor pero también con el recuerdo de lo bonito que fue. Son esas lecciones de vida la que hacen a esta película una historia increíblemente conmovedora. De niña lloré porque el Gigante simplemente moría, pero de mayor lo comprendo mejor y eso lo hace aún más triste. Él murió entendiendo que era un noble sacrificio necesario.
Justamente en ese punto vemos un poco de la psicología del héroe, alguien que está dispuesto a sacrificarse por proteger a los demás. El Gigante aprende esto del ídolo de Hogarth, Superman, y aunque sea un rol a seguir evidentemente ficticio lo cierto es que al plantear un personaje que no posee las mismas características de Superman pero que puede ser igual de noble y valiente, también puede convertirse en un héroe.
No importa el contexto en el que te encuentres, no importa la forma en la que hayas nacido, al final tú tienes algo en tu interior, en tus propias capacidades que puedes utilizar para hacer el bien, que puedes usar para cambiar el curso de las cosas, decidir y hacerte valer por ti mismo. Esta película nos enseña a que tú puedes hacer los cambios que sean necesarios para lograr tener una vida mejor. Está en ti tomar esa decisión y afrontarla.
Para mí esta película es una joya del cine animado para niños. Es emocionante, entretenida y con mensajes poderosos al igual que valiosos para cualquier persona. También hay que destacar que para tener un presupuesto bajo y la época en la que fue hecha, la animación es fluida, bastante bien hecha así como con un estilo llamativo.
Para quienes la hayan visto, seguramente les traerá tanta nostalgia como a mí porque es una historia muy conmovedora que hace llorar a más de uno, pero vale la pena verla incluso más de una vez...
En cierta forma, la gran mayoria de peliculas clasificadas para niños, no son 100% para niños jaja tienen sus mensajes profundos y escenas que podrian considerarse no aptas para niños jaja pero bueno, es una pena que esta pelicula no haya recibido el credito que se merecia, es muy bonita a pesar que la vi hace muchos años y poco recuerdo de ella.
Tienes toda la razón. Creo que es precisamente por eso, para sembrar una idea que realmente se entenderá es mucho tiempo después.
