Old, Heroic, Thrilling: "Bridal Mask" Series Review
One of the longest episode series I've seen in a long while, it took my friend and I almost more than a week to finish this series since we had to wait for each other to continue lol. I bet I'd have felt less of all I felt seeing this series if I had seen it alone but it was all too much on me as my friend kept pointing out what I'd have just skipped through and enjoy the scenes.
A friend shared the series with me though not the complete season and it took me a while before I decided to see it, you could relate if it has happened with you before. I wish I had seen it much earlier than I did. Maybe it was seeing it with a friend from start to finish or maybe it's the iconic storyline, but it was a great experience.
"Bridal Mask" is a 28 episode series released in the year 2012, more than 12 years since that time. An old series with the genres "History, Period drama, Romance" starred by Joo Won from the medical series "Good Doctor" and the action movie "Cartel". I'm not familiar with the female lead but I've seen the supporting male lead in a few other series, not memorable enough though.
The storyline is about A Joseon guy who becomes a police officer under the Japanese evil rule over his own country. To get his family out of poverty, he becomes a popular loyal dog to the Japanese among Joseon people. Among his many successes in the police force, catching Bridal Mask became his die hard goal. Bridal Mask is the Joseon hero who keeps saving his people from the Japanese tyrants.
The Bridal Mask turns out to be the elder brother to Japanese loyal dog and after his death, knowing what his brother was fighting for, the police man began a double life. Living as bridal Mask who saves his people and an annoying police officer who his people hates. He has a childhood first love, a friend who turned to an enemy and a country to serve.
The series takes us on an exposition of what the Japanese colonisation was like, of course it's only a bit about it but I like that we could actually just picture it at our own imagination using what they've shown us. There is the organization of wealthy and corrupt Joseon people who are at the head of selling away their country, the forceful use of Joseon women for comfort at war zones and the constant beatings and killings of the disobedient Joseon people.
In the midst of this is the police officer who will try to make everything right while hiding his double life identity, and a love that only exist in movies (where one dies for love lol). The female lead has got to be one of the few ones I couldn't bring myself to like in the series until the end, annoying is the word for her role in the series. It didn't change anything in the series though, I just wish she was given a better role.
It's funny how I enjoyed watching this supporting male lead character act evil and too smart sometimes and I didn't like the female lead, really funny but it's the truth. He is the best friend to the main lead when he was just a teacher to Joseon children but became an enemy when he started working as a police officer at a high rank.
I tell you, his facial expression in this series is iconic. His role made me curious to go check him out in the other series I've seen him wondering why he wasn't memorable to me in them. He played the role of being a son to a Japanese citizen who is a part of the evil organization that is colonizing the country and he didn't fail to show his true colour immediately he became a police.
The highlights for me in this series were all the scenes where bridal mask is on action. While it was both funny and annoying with the way he uses his weapon to act out, it was still memorable and thrilling how he succeeds with his plan most of the times.
One scene that left my friend and I almost in tears was where the lead character lost his brother to his own bullet and his mother on the same day. We didn't cry but believe me, it was heartwrenching to watch that scene to make anyone want to cry. It reminded me of some old movies that brought me to tears in the past.
In conclusion, it's an old series but I'll recommend it to anyone. The storyline is a good and unique one and will keep you thrilled until the end, the suspense is top notch too. Since it's an old one, I want to believe there are many who have seen it long before I did, have you?

One of the best to ever see the screen even though it didn't end well for me but it was a show I'll be willing to see again and again
Yeah, the end wasn't satisfying but I enjoyed the storyline totally.
