El Gran Gatsby / The Great Gatsby (2013): Movie Review
To talk about this film the first thing to mention is its scenery, shots, colors, lighting and everything related to this, because without a doubt the production put most of its effort in this category, achieving an excellent aesthetic, where all the excesses get an atmosphere that caught me, enjoying each of the follies we see in the parties at the mansion of Gatsby.
Another strong point of the movie were the actors, Leonardo Di Caprio had an incredible performance, getting into the skin of Jay Gatsby, giving us one of the best performances of his career. Carey Mulligan also did a very good interpretation of the indecipherable Daisy, as did Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, while the rest of the cast was good, being very striking for me the transformation of Isla Fisher as Tom Buchanan's mistress, because in the first scenes I had trouble recognizing her.
Sinopsis según FilmAffinity / Synopsis according FilmAffinity:
"New York, 1920's. In the American high society, the presence of Jay Gatsby, a mysterious and immensely rich man, who everyone considers an upstart, which does not prevent them from attending his lavish parties at his grand mansion on Long Island. Gatsby is obsessed with the idea of recovering the love he let slip away years ago. To do so, he befriends his newly arrived neighbor, the young Nick Carraway."
But beyond all that, I think the film's greatest strength is in the message it conveyed to me, because wealth and fame are ephemeral, just like life itself. Living from the past and focusing your whole life on that is a mistake, because even if we see very clearly the green light on the other side of the lake, people change and evolve constantly, so we can not force anyone to be who they are not, even if we remember other things, because most of the time that image is only an idealization and not reality.
We also see the parallelism between characters, seeing the motivations of both Gatsby and his opponent in love, Daisy's husband, Tom Buchanan, seeing how they both got there and the values they both have, because although Di Caprio's character reached that social stratum with business of dubious legality, personally he seems more loyal, while Buchanan is the opposite, being of more ostentatious origins, but betrays both his friends and his wife.
As for the story, I have seen that this movie is based on a book, this one even being a remake of another adaptation in the 70's. The main complaint I have seen from many is how the director abuses pomposity and transforms the plot into a love story, being the original much more complex, as Gatsby with his ambition was behind the American dream, since coming from poverty, Daisy meant everything he always aspired to, so his feelings less romantic than what we are shown on screen.
This makes the film lose some of the important details concerning Gatsby, such as that his infatuation was not as reciprocated as seen in the film, plus we see many repetitive scenes as the story progresses, as if the director wanted to make much incapie in detail of the story, removing any hint of surprise. Likewise, Nick's interference in the story seems to me a bit exaggerated, although it becomes a little understandable, since he is the narrator of the story, from a mental sanatorium.
In conclusion, in my opinion, this film is quite good, it has many really striking elements, plus it has first class actors, who did a very good job, and although the development of the story and the script has its inconsistencies, this is not something so serious, despite the many opinions of experts on the subject, so it is a film that I would blindly recommend.
This movie is a classic and still one of my favorite movies yet.
