Miller's Girl (2024): Movie Review
Esta cinta levantó un poco de polémica hace una semanas, ya que cuenta la historia del enamoramiento, o tal vez sólo deseo sexual, que se forma entre una estudiante de 18 años y su profesor de literatura que probablemente está en sus 50, y aunque es una situación que no se aleja mucho de la realidad que vivimos día a día, estos son temas tabú que poco se tocan por lo indebido de la relación, aunque en esta cinta me hubiese gustado que hayan sido más atrevidos, tanto en su proposición como en el desenlace final.
This film raised a bit of controversy a few weeks ago, as it tells the story of the infatuation, or maybe just sexual desire, that forms between an 18 year old student and her literature professor who is probably in his 50's, and although it is a situation that is not far from the reality we live day to day, these are taboo subjects that are rarely touched because of the impropriety of the relationship, although in this film I would have liked them to have been more daring, both in their proposal and in the final outcome.
Probablemente una de las cosas que más polémica generó fue que la actriz que hizo de Cairo Sweet, la estudiante, fue Jenna Ortega, alguien que se le ha dado una imagen más impoluta por sus series pasadas como Wednesday, y el resto de sus trabajos más Family Friendly. Cairo es una chica de un pequeño pueblo sureño, que sufre un abandono contante por parte de sus padres, dos abogados muy bien remunerados, y en su deseo de dedicarse a la escritura, conoce a Jonathan Miller, su profesor y un escritor dedicado al área del erotismo, con una única publicación que no fue exitosa.
Probably one of the things that generated the most controversy was that the actress who played Cairo Sweet, the student, was Jenna Ortega, someone who has been given a more pristine image for her past series like Wednesday, and the rest of her more Family Friendly work. Cairo is a girl from a small southern town, who suffers constant neglect by her parents, two very well paid lawyers, and in her desire to devote herself to writing, she meets Jonathan Miller, her teacher and a writer dedicated to the area of eroticism, with a single publication that was not successful.

La relación y la química entre estos dos protagonistas me pareció muy buena, ya que nos van mostrando como se van haciendo cercanos, al mismo tiempo como la soledad los engulle en su vida diaria, pues Cairo es abandonada constantemente por sus padres, mientras que Miller, pese a estar casado, vemos como están en horas bajas y como su relación va en decadencia, ya que el trabajo de su mujer y su propia melancolía los aleja cada vez más.
The relationship and chemistry between these two protagonists seemed very good to me, as they show us how they become close, at the same time as loneliness engulfs them in their daily lives, as Cairo is constantly abandoned by her parents, while Miller, despite being married, we see how they are in low hours and how their relationship is in decline, as his wife's work and his own melancholy pushes them further and further apart.
Luego todo empieza a tener un significado diferente cuando la asignación para el final del curso es escribir un ensayo con el estilo de su autor favorito, por lo que Cairo decide hacerlo basando en el mismo profesor Miller, combinando la realidad con la ficción y agregando bastante erotismo, llegando al punto que Miller tiene que darse autoplacer para calmar sus ansias, situación que lo llevó a ver que había pasado los límites con su estudiante.
Then everything starts to take on a different meaning when the assignment for the end of the course is to write an essay in the style of his favorite author, so Cairo decides to do it based on Professor Miller himself, combining fact with fiction and adding quite a bit of eroticism, reaching the point that Miller has to indulge in self-pleasure to calm his cravings, a situation that led him to see that he had crossed the limits with his student.
Aquí es donde la película pierde fuerza, ya que cegada por el rechazo, y por la misma juventud, Cairo busca venganza sin importar que vidas arruine, pues también tiene de un hilo a otro profesor y a su mejor amiga, planeando todo de antemano de forma muy fría, mientras que Miller en vez de enfrentarla, da un paso al lado por el miedo, negando o no aceptando la culpa que también acarrea en toda esta situación.
Here is where the film loses strength, as blinded by rejection, and by the same youth, Cairo seeks revenge no matter what lives she ruins, as she also has another teacher and her best friend by a thread, planning everything beforehand in a very cold way, while Miller instead of confronting her, steps aside out of fear, denying or not accepting the guilt she also carries in this whole situation.
Los demás personajes también tienen un transfondo y desarrollo interesante, como Winnie, la amiga incondicional de la protagonista, quien busca sacarla del cascarron, terminando muy afectada ante la traicion y manipulación que sufrió, más aún sabiendo que su jueguito se le había salido de las manos. La ambientación también me pareció acorde a lo que se quería transmitir en la película, aunque los viajes del Cairo por el bosque, haciéndola ver como un ser que no encajaba allí o algo por el estilo, simplemente no tenían sentido para mí.
The other characters also have an interesting background and development, such as Winnie, the unconditional friend of the protagonist, who seeks to get her out of her shell, ending up very affected by the betrayal and manipulation she suffered, even more so knowing that her little game had gotten out of hand. The setting also seemed to me in line with what the film wanted to convey, although Cairo's travels through the forest, making her look like a being that didn't fit in there or something like that, just didn't make sense to me.
En conclusión, la película me pareció algo pretenciosa, el factor del erotismo no me pareció que se allá desarrollado bien, pero lo que menos me gustó fue la conclusión de la historia, ya que deja un final abierto en que es fácil intuir que tendrá un cierre que destruirá la vida de todos, pero mas alla de eso, no queda claro si inclusive es otra de las fantasías literarias de la protagonista, por lo que no me dejo satisfecho, teniendo que decir que pudiera recomendar esta película para ver y sacar conclusiones de la polémica, no teniendo mucho más que agregar.
In conclusion, the film seemed somewhat pretentious, the erotic factor did not seem to me to be well developed, but what I liked least was the conclusion of the story, as it leaves an open ending in which it is easy to sense that it will have a closure that will destroy the lives of all, but beyond that, it is not clear if it is even another of the literary fantasies of the protagonist, so I was not satisfied, having to say that I could recommend this film to see and draw conclusions from the controversy, not having much more to add.
