I saw it some time ago and came across it again relatively recently, so why write about it now? Because I firmly believe that it is a film that deserves to be seen and felt by as many people as possible, as it is different, creative and truly inclusive.

Hoy quiero compartir mis pensamientos sobre CODA: Señales del corazón (2021), una joya cinematográfica la cual ganó reconocimiento por su autenticidad y emotividad, llevándose incluso el premio Oscar a la Mejor Película. La vi hace algún tiempo y volví a toparme con ella hace relativamente poco. ¿Por qué escribir sobre ella ahora? Porque creo firmemente que es una película que merece ser vista y sentida por la mayor cantidad de personas posible, ya que es diferente, creativa y realmente inclusiva.

For those of you who are not familiar with the title, CODA stands for “Child of Deaf Adults”. This film introduces us to the life of Ruby Rossi, a teenager who is the only hearing person in her deaf family. Imagine for a moment being the bridge between two worlds, the constant interpreter for your parents and your brother, as you try to forge your own path and discover your own voice.

Para quienes no estén familiarizados con el título, CODA les indico que son las siglas en inglés de "Child of Deaf Adults" (Hijo/a de Adultos Sordos). Esta película nos introduce en la vida de Ruby Rossi, una adolescente que es la única persona oyente en su familia sorda. Imagínense por un momento ser el puente entre dos mundos, la intérprete constante para tus padres y tu hermano, mientras intentas forjar tu propio camino y descubrir tu propia voz.

The film, directed by Sian Heder, is set in a Massachusetts fishing community. The Rossi family struggles to keep their fishing business afloat, and Ruby plays a crucial role as a performer in negotiations and day-to-day life. However, Ruby harbors a secret, a passion that clashes head-on with her family's needs: she loves to sing. When she joins her high school choir, directed by the kind but firm Bernardo Villalobos (Eugenio Derbez), she discovers a surprising vocal talent and begins to dream of a future beyond her small town.

Her parents, Frank and Jackie (played by Troy Kotsur and Marlee Matlin, both deaf actors), are strong, independent and loving characters, even if they sometimes struggle to understand their hearing daughter's aspirations. Her brother Leo (Daniel Durant), also deaf, brings an additional perspective on the complexities of identity and the quest for independence within the family.

There are scenes that will make you laugh out loud, such as Ruby's awkward interactions with her family, and others that will leave your heart pounding, especially when it comes to her desire to pursue her passion for music. Music, by the way, plays a crucial role in the story, not only as a means of expression for Ruby, but also as a bridge between her and her family.

Debo destacar que uno de los aspectos más sobresaliente de la película es su capacidad para equilibrar momentos de comedia y drama. Hay escenas que te harán reír a carcajadas, como las interacciones torpes de Ruby con su familia, y otras que te dejarán con el corazón en un puño, especialmente cuando se trata de su deseo de seguir su pasión por la música. La música, por cierto, juega un papel crucial en la historia, no solo como un medio de expresión para Ruby, sino también como un puente entre ella y su familia.

Now I would like to share with you what really moved me about CODA. From the very beginning, I felt deeply connected to Ruby's internal struggle. How often have we felt torn between the expectations of our loved ones and our own desires? The film captures that tension so authentically and poignantly that it's impossible not to empathize. Moreover, the naturalness with which the life of a deaf family is portrayed. The film avoids falling into stereotypes or idealization, showing moments of joy and connection as well as frustrations and misunderstandings. The inclusion of deaf actors in the main roles is a huge success, bringing authenticity and depth to the performances.

There are scenes in which the sound is attenuated or disappears completely, allowing us to experience the world from the perspective of the deaf characters. These moments are particularly powerful and invite us to reflect on the importance of communication and different sensory experiences. What to say about the songs chosen, they are not just an accompaniment, but are narratively integrated, reflecting Ruby's feelings and aspirations. There is one scene in particular (which I won't spoil for you) where the music is used in such an innovative and emotive way that it gave me goosebumps. The way the sign language interpretation and the music are intertwined is just brilliant and makes you feel the song in a completely different way.

Ahora quisiera compartir con ustedes lo que realmente me movió de CODA. Desde el principio, me sentí profundamente conectada con la lucha interna de Ruby. ¿Cuántas veces nos hemos sentido divididos entre las expectativas de nuestros seres queridos y nuestros propios deseos? La película captura esa tensión de una manera tan auténtica y conmovedora que es imposible no empatizar con ella. Por otra parte, la naturalidad con la que se representa la vida de una familia sorda. La película evita caer en estereotipos o en la idealización, mostrando tanto los momentos de alegría y conexión como las frustraciones y los malentendidos. La inclusión de actores sordos en los roles principales es un acierto enorme, aportando autenticidad y profundidad a las interpretaciones.

Hay escenas en las que el sonido se atenúa o desaparece por completo, permitiéndonos experimentar el mundo desde la perspectiva de los personajes sordos. Hay una escena en particular (que no voy a spoilearles) donde la música se utiliza de una manera tan innovadora y emotiva que me puso la piel de gallina. La forma en que se entrelazan la interpretación en lenguaje de señas y la música es simplemente brillante y te hace sentir la canción de una manera completamente diferente.

CODA is a film that makes you laugh, moves you to tears (yes, prepare tissues) and leaves you with a warm feeling in your heart. It shows us that silence is not absence, but a different form of communication, rich in nuances and emotions. It is one of those stories about family, identity, communication, unconditional love and the courage to follow our own dreams, even when it means defying the expectations of those we love the most.
