Movies & TV Shows Community Highlight #951
Hello! As part of our ongoing efforts to improve both interaction and curation in the Movies and TV Shows Community, this post is one of many to highlight and boost members of the past week that have posted what we believe is exceptional content.
The Details
Each week, our Moderators will monitor the posts within the Movies and TV Shows Community and handpick the ones that are believed to stand out under numerous factors: post quality, length, and subject.
There are no entry requirements, and this is not a contest, but simply a roundup intended to provide additional exposure to all of you for your efforts. Just have fun posting in the Movies & TV Shows Community and five or more posts will be chosen frequently.

Aspects that make The Substance Dantesque: a) the level of focus of the disgusting scenes: if you have a weak stomach it will make you want to vomit, b) the way Sue is born from Elisabeth Sparkle's body: something very horrifying, and similar to how God created Eve from a part of Adam, c) the horror: as the scenes progress Elisabeth Sparkle becomes a monster that causes fear, yes fear of becoming something she was not, d) mental imbalances: the plot plays with Sue and Elisabeth Sparkle. Everyone thinks they are the same person, but there is a twist.

Beverly Keane is a very striking character, a teacher at Crockett Island School. She appears to be a very correct, deeply religious woman who is judgmental, not kind or really nice to her community. At first she acts as a close support to Father Paul, but then she begins to influence his decisions and to cover up the signs of darkness that he shows, all with the aim of protecting her faith and preventing it from being questioned publicly.

This is why the film has been promoted as a supernatural or horror film. In the Spanish-speaking market it has been given the title Los Horrores de Caddo Lake. When I decided to see it, I thought it would be a story about a killer who kills young people in a lake, but it has nothing to do with that. It's a story that has an element of science fiction and at the same time it's a family drama. The plot is nothing new. The story may be reminiscent of others we have seen, but the filmmaking is outstanding and, in my case, it managed to move me.

Talking about the explanation of the film: Baby Doll, locked up in the asylum, imagines a parallel universe in which she and her friends in the asylum are prostitutes in a high-class brothel, who (just like in reality) are there against their will, within Baby Doll's invented story, also when she dances for the clients, she imagines a third parallel world in which she and her friends are heroines in search of objects that will help them in their mission: In all 3 worlds, reality and Baby Doll's two fanaticisms, the goal is the same. ... escape

Where the film slightly falters is in its pace. It almost hits too fast. We get zero backstory before we’re plunged into chaos, and while that might be thrilling, it leaves little room for emotional connection with the characters. By the end, it’s hard to remember who survived, not because the film lacked action but because it lacked those meaningful pauses to catch our breath. Plus, the dialogue occasionally feels a bit forced; there's only so much breathless one-liner action you can handle before it starts to feel mechanical.

I'll say the film was trying to be as Gen-Z as possible. Made many of the songs, visuals, and even plot not sit quite right with me. I would have rather spent that time watching actual horror, but I understand that it may appeal to a different type of audience. Nonetheless, the cast was stellar.

Something I liked about this series is that it was full of very interesting unknowns, I think that was one of the strengths of the series because even though halfway through the season I felt the need to stop watching it, I stayed there waiting for the resolution of the unknowns. Kathryn Hahn's performance is also one of the great attractions of the series, her charisma, gestures and overt evil, although controlled, made me awaken some admiration for this actress which I had not on the radar beyond her performance in WandaVision. The special effects are also quite good, much more than what we have been seeing in recent Marvel series or movies.

After five centuries of uninterrupted occupation, Portuguese colonialism withdrew from its African colonies in 1975, Angola being the most important of all. But things were not as easy as leaving and handing the country over to its people, because who were they going to hand it over to if all the inhabitants of the country had been born and lived under occupation all their lives? If we add to this that a war was already occurring due to the fight for independence and that not all factions - although they wanted to free themselves from Portugal - were in agreement, it's logical that the consequence would have been precisely what occurred: a civil war. A battle for power that lasted for 27 years (!) and when it all began, there in the city of Luanda was a brave and committed reporter named Ryszard Kapuściński.

You must see it to understand how finite the time of life is. Every time we wake up, a day is gone—one that you can never live in. Time goes by so fast until you get old. What was fashionable at some point in your life needs to never be fashionable again. Under this argument operates the life of the protagonist of this story.
