Oriana y sus referentes en los periodos del Barroco y Rococo[ENG-ESP]
The purpose of this post is to study the film "Oriana" by Fina Torres, filmed in 1985, and to evaluate which features of the different artistic periods are found in its aesthetic treatment.
El presente post como finalidad estudiar la película "Oriana" de Fina Torres filmada en el año 1985, y evaluar que rasgos de los diferentes periodos artísticos se encuentran en su tratamiento estético.
The film is about an inheritance that Maria received after the death of her aunt Oriana, who left her a hacienda in Venezuela, this leads her to travel from France to the tropical country. Maria's intention is to sell the hacienda, but everything changes when she visits the house, remembering the childhood shared with her aunt Oriana and the mystery that she brought with her, all this gives her a sentimental value, so she decides not to sell it and leave the house to its true owner, Oriana's son.
El largometraje se trata de una herencia que le toco recibir a María, tras la muerte de su tía Oriana, quien le dejo una hacienda en Venezuela, esto la lleva a viajar de Francia para el país tropical. La intención de María es vender la hacienda, todo cambia cuando recorre la casa, logrando recordar la infancia compartida junto a su tía Oriana y el misterio que ella traía consigo, todo esto le da un valor sentimental por lo cual decide no venderla y dejarle la casa a su verdadero dueño, el hijo de Oriana.
To advance further in the description of the film, it is important to note that the writer of this story was called Marvel Moreno, a friend of Fina Torres, who gave her this story developed in a Visit of Fina Torres.
Para avanzar más en la descripción de la película, es importante destacar que la escritora de esta historia se llamó Marvel Moreno, amiga de Fina torre, quien le regalo ese cuento desarrollado en una Visita de Fina Torres.
According to the director this story had to do with a Marvel house where she felt there were ghosts. As can be noticed from the creation of the story, this film has been created by women, an important point to delve a little deeper.
Según la directora esta historia tenía que ver con una casa de Marvel donde ella sentía que existían fantasmas. Como se puede notar desde la creación de la historia, esta película ha sido creada por mujeres, un punto importante para ahondar un poco más.
Feminist cinema is a category of cinema that is expanding more and more, like all the others that were not conventional and Oriana at the time of its premiere (1985) contributed to this expansive contribution. In the book "La mirada femenina en el cine venezolano" by Rosa Raydan, who comments:
El cine feminista es una categoría del cine que se está expandiendo cada vez más, como todas las demás que no eran convencionales y Oriana en su momento de estreno (1985) contribuyo en ese aporte expansivo. En el libro de “La mirada femenina en el cine venezolano” de Rosa Raydan, quien comenta:
It is a story with a strong female presence that uses the feeling of nostalgia as a stylistic resource.

If there is something we can observe in most of the films, it is the high presence of the male figure, unlike Oriana, where the female figure appears even to react to male comments, this decision of direction communicates a clear ideal that is to be communicated.
Si algo podemos observar en las mayorías de las películas es alta presencia de la figura masculina, a diferencia de Oriana, donde la figura femenina aparece hasta para reaccionar a los comentarios masculinos, esta decisión de dirección nos comunica un ideal claro que se quiere comunicar.
Evaluating the history of art, it can be found that there is no artistic period in which the appearance of women in the arts began, this is shown gradually; however, we can start with the Baroque period where Artemisia Gentileschi, was formed as a painter thanks to the teachings of his father.
Evaluándola historia del arte, se puede encontrar que no hay un periodo artístico en el cual se inició la aparición de la mujer en las artes, esta se muestra de forma gradual; sin embargo, podemos empezar con el periodo Barroco donde Artemisia Gentileschi, se formó con pintora gracias a las enseñanzas de su padre.
It is said that this painter was a pioneer in the representation of women in art, her paintings showed strong and independent women, as we see in the painting of Judith and her maid; on the other hand, she represents violence against women, this can be seen in the painting of "Susana and the old men" and also uses the female body as a tool of expression, the painting of "Aurora" can be a good example.
Se dice que esta pintora fue pionera en la representación de la mujer en el arte, sus pinturas mostraron mujeres fuertes e independientes, como lo vemos en el cuadro de Judit y su doncella; por otro lado, representa la violencia contra las mujeres, esto se puede ver la pintura de “Susana y los viejos” y también usa el cuerpo femenino como herramienta de expresión, la pintura de “Aurora” puede ser un buen ejemplo.

Another representation of baroque was the decoration of the house, we can see it in the wood carvings, the Frescoes, and ornate furniture.

The costumes are also shown with baroque aesthetics, characterized by dramatic lines, abundant ornaments and vibrant colors.

The Rococo period also makes life in the film in the feature film, one of its features is the representation of the social life of the time, exactly Oriana's story is dedicated to show how is the Venezuelan society at the time of the landowners, and the Venezuelan society that has family in Europe.
El periodo del Rococó, también hace vida en la película en el largometraje, uno de sus rasgos es la representación de la vida social de la época, exactamente la historia de Oriana se dedica a mostrar cómo es la sociedad venezolana en la época de los terratenientes, y la sociedad venezolana que tiene familia en Europa.
We can place this family in an upper middle class, which does not communicate much with everyone, they relate to each other, I could see a difference in communication between Maria and her husband, unlike when she communicated with Sanchez, she used to be a little colder. In the Rococo paintings we can see how the artists painted the daily life in the gardens of the house. I believe that Fina Torres took us not only to the gardens of the house, but also showed us the dances and parties that reflect the elegant and refined lifestyle of the colonial elite.
Podemos ubicar a esta familia en una clase media alta, la cual no se comunica mucho con todo el mundo, se relacionan entre ellos, pude ver una diferencia de comunicación entre María y su esposo, a diferencia cuando se comunicaba con Sánchez, solía ser un poco más fría. En las pinturas del Rococó podemos ver como los artistas pintaban la cotidianidad en los jardines de la casa, Considero que Fina Torres nos llevó no solo a los jardines de la casa, sino que también nos mostró los bailes y fiestas que reflejan el estilo de vida elegante y refinado de la élite colonial.

Venezuelan art, as in many Latin American countries, usually expresses a cultural mix, especially in this case when we are talking about cinema, an art that exists thanks to the link between many arts and sciences.
El arte venezolano como en muchos países latinoamericanos suele expresar una mezcla cultural, más en este caso que se está hablando desde el cine, un arte que existe gracias al vínculo de muchas artes y las ciencias.

Another characteristic of the Baroque that we find in the film is the cellar light, which is also known as Dutch chiaroscuro. In several scenes it was illuminated by simulating a main light source coming from windows or candles, this directional light is incised to the point of creating strong contrasts.
Otra característica del Barroco que encontramos en la película, es la luz de bodega, que también se conoce como claroscuro holandés. En varias escenas se iluminó simulando una fuente de luz principal proveniente de ventanas o velas, esta luz direccional incide hasta el punto de crear fuertes contrastes.
The feelings and secrets of Oriana's character are reflected in the house where she lives, as Maria walks through the corridors of the house, you can notice the depth generated by the cellar light, giving that touch of mystery that Maria manages to solve as she walks through the house.
Los sentimientos y secretos del personaje de Oriana se reflejan en la casa donde ella vive, al caminar María por los pasillos del hogar, se puede notar aquella profundidad que genera la luz de bodega, dando así, ese toque de misterio que María logra resolver a medida que recorre la casa.
The times and transitions in some scenes, were developed thanks to the use of the cellar light, who also provided the drama and suspense to give that touch of realism to the film. It can be said that the Baroque and Rococo are very well represented in this feature film, I am surprised that it did not show another period, this shows me that the film was very well done, I think the director was very clear in what she wanted to convey from her ideology, and Venezuelan cultural identity.
Los tiempos y las transiciones en algunas escenas, se lograron desarrollar gracias a la utilización de la luz de bodega, quien aporto también el drama y suspenso para dar ese toque de realismo a la película. Se puede decir que el Barroco y Rococó tienen se representan muy bien este largometraje, me sorprende que no mostró otro periodo, esto me demuestra que la película fue muy bien realizada, considero que la directora estaba muy clara en lo que deseaba trasmitir desde su ideología, e identidad cultural venezolana.
