Snowpiercer - Netflix Series Review

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Name - Snowpiercer TV Series
Released - 2020
Creators - Graeme Manson & Josh Friedman

It was a couple of months back since my review of the Snowpiercer film that I absolutely loved and I have now finished the 3rd series of the netflix TV series of the same name.

I love the idea of there being some extinction level event and boarding a train sounds pretty feasible in an old fashioned sort of way. If you have been on the Shinkansen in Japan, you can imagine what could be possible on a futuristically built train.

I am watching quite a few post-apocalyptic films these days and this is one of the good ones, however, it started off very slow and looked like a badly scripted BBC series in the beginning, mostly because of some poor acting and storylines.

The bad acting is mostly from Daveed Diggs who is just awful in the role of Andre Layton and just cannot carry this role. He looks most of the time ridiculous and out of sorts for the situations he finds himself in. Not only that, he is very cringe and even though you should like him as the hero, you just can't, which is a shame.

Many of the men in the series are just made weird or act strange or beta to some of the series alpha women, which is the current trend in Hollywood. This doesn't help in the first series to catch onto some characters that you like. The strong acting from Jennifer Connelly as Melanie Cavill and Alison Wright who is brilliant as Ruth, still can't keep you glued on their own.

However, that all changes when the brilliant Sean Bean joins the fray and then the real fun begins and we see some awesome storylines and acting. I am a huge Sean Bean fan and love his on-screen presence. Who better to lead the charge on Snowpiercer than the King o-the North himself, Eddard Stark.

We don't see the kind and wise king of the north this time, we get to see him as the smart engineer Mr Wilford, who has a pretty mean and cruel side. It is a side that Sean Bean pulls off, but you still can't help but like him with his swagger and inner knowledge that he should be king and unite the 7 kingdoms. Only the Kingslayer would be a match for Sean.

Together with the northern lass Alison Wright, you can't help enjoy seeing them on screen. The action and storylines are a little up and down, but mostly ok. You need to set your imagination aside for quite a few things, but it doesn't detract too much from the show.

My favorite scenes are usually when Sean is on and giving quips and jibes to the rest of the cast. He appears as the king of the castle and it is pleasant to watch most of the time. My only detraction from the show was the need to be so graphic and show the horrible cutting scenes and it was almost some weird sort of blood fetish ritual thing. I would recommend to skip that scene. I was surprised Sean agreed to film it.

The most annoying character goes to the daughter of Melanie Cavill who just gets on your nerves with her moody emotional baggage and chatting with her mum, it somehow doesn't resonate and you want her to get on with whatever she is doing, usually related to repairing the train or finding out whats wrong with it.

Although there are some things to moan about, mostly the series is enjoyable to watch and I can recommend it, if not only to see Sean and Ruth in action.

I totally get what you mean about Snowpiercer starting off slow. But once Sean Bean joins, it's like a whole new show. His charisma really elevates the series. What an awesome series good friend. Happy you shared this one

Charisma, that is the word I was looking for. He really does being life into the show.

avatar

That's the perfect word path 😂😂😂🥰🥰 Charisma indeed

I haven't seen either the movie or the series, but after your review, I think I'll look for the movie and watch it first and then I'll see if I give the series a chance ;)

avatar

I would watch the movie first. The main attraction of the series is the performance of Sean Bean. He is great to watch.

avatar

Don't you hate it when one bad actor ruins a whole show? My wife and I were just watching something the other day and she was like dang this is bad. I think it was an episode of the equalizer.

avatar

Yeah, I was shaking my head wondering how they choose this guy. Then people wonder why the ratings are bad.

avatar

Still have my doubts about this one maybe this just tipped the balance anyway lets !PIMP !PIZZA and promote this post as you solved my riddle!

avatar

Thanks man. It has its up and down moments for sure. More scenes with Ned Stark would have improved it. I think I need to watch some reruns of Sharpe!

avatar

I haven’t seen this movie before
I may get to see it later
Who knows?

avatar

I have seen the season one. To be honest it had those beautiful wow moments, but at the end I feel it didn't have that nerve wrecking full-on characteristics of an apocalyptic story, but it was good to some extent, not to range of series like walking Dead though.

I have to agree, in some places it lets you down. As a fan of the genre, I kept watching plus Sean gets better in the later seasons!

They characters eventually evolved and got better throughout the series.

Well, thanks to Sean bean who with fray provided you entertainment otherwise I thought david is gonna ruin your mood throughout the movie... Haha

avatar

Yeah, it was lucky he was a good bad guy and kept things entertaining.

avatar

It's one I never watched, I'll have to give it a chance. Connelly is a good actress in just about everything!

She is lovely to watch. More of her with Sean would be good.

I really enjoyed snowpiercer - and Sean Bean was the best in it - he really plays that character well. I wonder if there will be another series or not - I guess they have maybe left it a little too long now. I've still not seen the film, so will have to try and find it somewhere.

He was really great. There were a few stellar performances in the show, but also a few really dire ones. Overall though, I quite enjoyed it. The film is worth watching, certainly more condensed and another perspective so to say.
