[ESP-ENG] Film Review: Dead Poets Society (1989)

Hola amigos de la comunidad de Movies & Tv, espero se encuentren muy bien el día de hoy. Hace mucho tiempo tenía pendiente ver la película La Sociedad de los Poetas Muertos, una película de culto que género muy buenas críticas en el año 1989, protagonizada por Robin Williams cómo un profesor que viene a cambiar el mundo de sus estudiantes y que les enseña que el arte es una de las formas más especiales para ver y aprender del mundo y de la vida misma. Es una película que vale muchísimo la pena verla y que simplemente te deja una sensación de liberación y de amor hacia ella. Así que te invito a leer mi reseña sobre La Sociedad de los Poetas Muertos.

Hello friends of the Movies & Tv community, I hope you are doing well today. A long time ago I had pending to see the movie Dead Poets Society, a cult movie that got very good reviews in 1989, starring Robin Williams as a teacher who comes to change the world of his students and teaches them that art is one of the most special ways to see and learn about the world and life itself. It is a movie that is very much worth watching and simply leaves you with a sense of liberation and love for it. So I invite you to read my review of The Dead Poets Society.

La historia comienza en el año 1959 con el nuevo año escolar en el instituto Welton, un lugar solo para jóvenes dónde la disciplina es la primera norma para formarse como jóvenes con un futuro brillante dentro de las reglas bastante ortodoxas y estrictas. En esta institución tenemos a un grupo de jóvenes dispuestos a aprender pero también llenos de muchos problemas de autoestima e inseguridades arraigado a el deseo de sus padres por verlos cómo adultos con una vida perfecta y un trabajo donde sean reconocidos. Pero las cosas empiezan a cambiar dentro de la institución cuando llega un ex alumno que ahora es profesor de literatura llamado John Keating, el tiene una idea totalmente diferente sobre dar sus clases y puede que esto no le sea de buen gusto al director y a los padres de los jovenes estudiantes.

The story begins in the year 1959 with the new school year at Welton High School, a place only for young people where discipline is the first rule to be formed as young people with a bright future within fairly orthodox and strict rules. In this institution we have a group of young people willing to learn but also full of many problems of self-esteem and insecurities rooted to the desire of their parents to see them as adults with a perfect life and a job where they are recognized. But things begin to change within the institution when a former student who is now a literature teacher named John Keating arrives, he has a totally different idea about teaching his classes and this may not be to the liking of the principal and the parents of the young students.

Keating (Robin Williams) es un hombre con un profundo amor por el arte y la vida, desde el comienzo de sus clases instó a los jóvenes a hablar sobre sus pensamientos y sentimientos sin miedo a ser juzgados, sus clases se convirtieron en unas horas para descubrir el por qué de la vida de cada uno de los jóvenes estudiantes y sus habilidades en el arte sobre todo les propuso crear poemas para hacer más dinámica la clase y no solamente guiarse por una vieja enciclopedia que les dirá solo la mitad de lo que realmente es el poder vivir desde tus convicciones y el amar las cosas que realmente llenen tu corazón. Obviamente la forma de enseñar del profesor Keating llamo la atención desde el principio del director y de los demás profesores quienes tienen una forma muy distinta de dar sus clases y una manera bastante antigua de ver el mundo.

Keating (Robin Williams) is a man with a deep love for art and life, from the beginning of his classes he urged the young people to talk about their thoughts and feelings without fear of being judged, His classes became a few hours to discover the why of life of each of the young students and their skills in art, above all he proposed them to create poems to make the class more dynamic and not only be guided by an old encyclopedia that will tell them only half of what it really is to be able to live from your convictions and love the things that really fill your heart. Obviously Professor Keating's way of teaching caught the attention from the beginning of the director and the other teachers who have a very different way of teaching their classes and a very old way of seeing the world.

Entre el grupo de jóvenes de la clase de literatura está Neil Perry (Robert Sean Leonard) un joven que desea profundamente dedicarse al mundo del teatro pero con un miedo muy grande hacia su padre quien espera que él sea el hijo perfecto, que vaya a la universidad y estudie medicina y que no tenga tiempo para pensar en tonterias como el hecho de querer dedicarse al arte, durante toda la película fue uno de los personajes principales y de los que más sufrió por el miedo a ser realmente quien queria ser. Tenemos a Todd Anderson (Ethan Hawke) quien es el compañero de habitación de Neil, además de ser nuevo en el instituto tiene una fuerte represión por mostrarse tal cual es y eso lo podemos notar en diferentes escenas dónde lucha contra la vergüenza de no poder tener una voz para luchar por sus propios ideales pero que con la ayuda del profesor Keating empezará a desenvolverse y a mirar a través del arte todas esas emociones que tiene reprimidas producto de las mismas exigencias de sus padres y de la época. También tenemos a Richard Cameron quien es disciplinado y aburrido y Knox Overstreet el cual ha descubierto el amor pero no sabe cómo conquistarlo. Mientras tanto los curiosos y aplicados Gerard Pitts y Steven Meeks construyen un radio para poder escuchar música.

Among the group of young people in the literature class is Neil Perry (Robert Sean Leonard) a young man who deeply wants to devote himself to the world of theater but with a great fear of his father who expects him to be the perfect son, to go to college and study medicine and not have time to think about nonsense like wanting to devote himself to art, throughout the film was one of the main characters and those who suffered the most for fear of being who he really wanted to be. We have Todd Anderson (Ethan Hawke) who is Neil's roommate, besides being new to the institute has a strong repression to show himself as he is and that we can notice in different scenes where he fights against the shame of not being able to have a voice to fight for their own ideals but with the help of Professor Keating will begin to develop and look through art all those emotions that have repressed product of the same demands of their parents and the time. We also have Richard Cameron who is disciplined and boring and Knox Overstreet who has discovered love but does not know how to conquer it. Meanwhile the curious and industrious Gerard Pitts and Steven Meeks build a radio to listen to music.

El profesor Keating les dice una frase que marcaría gran parte de la historia: Carpe diem que quiere decir "aprovechar el día", Robin Williams cómo siempre hizo a este personaje de manera magistral con la esencia de su personalidad y se sintió muy real su personaje, sobre todo en las escenas donde habla sobre la libertad de ser uno mismo y el poder encontrar tu lugar en el mundo a traves de el arte, el arte para el lo es todo y desea que los estudiantes entiendan que pueden escoger el camino que deseen para sus vidas siempre y cuando esto los haga felices, es un personaje con el que te sentiras identificado y que desearias haber conocido en los tiempos de estudios, para mi era una persona que mas alla del dinero que cobraba por su profesion, realmente se sentia vivo al enseñar en esa epoca tan difícil donde siempre estaba presente el pensamiento de llegar a ser mucho mas de lo que tus padres o amigos desean para ti.

Professor Keating tells them a phrase that would mark much of the story: Carpe diem which means "seize the day", Robin Williams as always made this character in a masterful way with the essence of his personality and felt very real his character, especially in the scenes where he talks about the freedom to be yourself and the power to find your place in the world through art, art for him is everything and he wants students to understand that they can choose the path they want for their lives as long as it makes them happy, he is a character with whom you will feel identified and that you wish you had known in the times of studies, for me he was a person that beyond the money he charged for his profession, he really felt alive when teaching in that difficult time where it was always present the thought of becoming much more than what your parents or friends want for you.

Realmente sentí que es una película que fue muy adelantada para su época, cada uno de los diálogos llenan de inspiración y ver cómo el hecho de querer hacer las cosas diferentes que las que hicieron tus padres podía ser motivo de desagrado y de castigos bastante duros que me hicieron sentir triste pero a la vez me llenaba de inspiración cada vez que los estudiantes tenían clases con el profesor Keating quien enseñaba desde el amor hacia su profesión y que realmente les importaba cada uno de esos adolescentes que se encontraban estudiando para ser muchas veces lo que sus padres esperaban de ellos y poder cumplir con lo que la sociedad dice que es lo aceptado. Es una película que tiene una duración de dos horas y aunque al comienzo fue un poco lenta luego que vamos conociendo a los personajes y sus historias podemos ver que la película fue hecha de manera en la que pudiera dejar un mensaje para la generación de los 80s y las siguientes.

I really felt it was a movie that was way ahead of its time, each one of the dialogues filled with inspiration and to see how the fact of wanting to do things differently than what your parents did could be a reason for displeasure and quite harsh punishments that made me feel sad but at the same time filled me with inspiration every time the students had classes with Professor Keating who taught from the love towards his profession and that he really cared about each one of those teenagers who were studying to be many times what their parents expected of them and to be able to comply with what society says is the accepted thing to do. It is a movie that has a duration of two hours and although at the beginning it was a little slow after we get to know the characters and their stories we can see that the movie was made in a way that it could leave a message for the generation of the 80s and the following ones.

En ella podemos encontrar conflictos con las reglas de la época, el miedo a no ser capaz de cumplir con los estándares de buen estudiante, el hecho de que fueran castigados de forma humillante y que nadie dijera nada al respecto, también el deseo de uno de los estudiantes por querer vivir del arte y la rabia que sentia su padre cada vez que le mencionaba el tema. También tiene un final que puede ser para algunos bastante triste, podemos ver cómo el estar rodeado de reglas hasta el punto de sentirse ahogado llevan a un joven a tomar una decisión drástica contra su vida y es algo que me impacto mucho aunque sabía que podría pasar, pero luego ver que debido a este acontecimiento empezaron a investigar al profesor Keating y su forma de dar las clases me lleno de mucha rabia, al final el fue quien realmente comprendio a sus estudiantes mucho mas que sus propios padres.

In it we can find conflicts with the rules of the time, the fear of not being able to meet the standards of a good student, the fact that they were punished in a humiliating way and no one said anything about it, also the desire of one of the students to want to live from art and the anger that his father felt every time he mentioned the subject. It also has an ending that can be for some quite sad, we can see how being surrounded by rules to the point of feeling drowned lead a young man to take a drastic decision against his life and it is something that impacted me a lot although I knew it could happen, but then see that because of this event began to investigate Professor Keating and his way of giving classes filled me with much anger, in the end he was the one who really understood his students much more than their own parents.

Es una historia que podemos ver cómo una forma en la que el cine tuvo un gran acontecimiento y que abrió la mente de muchas personas de esa época en cuanto a las restricciones y normas fuera de lo normal. Durante la película hay varias frases que te hacen reflexionar y que deseas poder ver la película una vez más como si fuera la primera vez, en mi opinión cada uno de los actores lo hicieron fantástico, también la dirección por parte de Peter Weir estuvo impecable cada toma y escena reflejaban la crudeza de la historia lo que hizo que me enganchara más dentro de ella y que quisiera saber por qué a tantas personas les gustó esta película. Ahora entiendo lo especial que fue para muchos verla, simplemente con tener a Robin Williams dentro de la historia ya sabes que vas a tener a alguien que te enseñara una o varias lecciones y que además te hará sentir parte de su propio mundo y también del valor que tiene el arte en todas sus formas, cómo en La Sociedad de los Poetas Muertos

It is a story that we can see as a way in which the cinema had a great event and that opened the minds of many people of that time in terms of restrictions and standards out of the ordinary. During the movie there are several sentences that make you think and wish you could watch the movie one more time as if it was the first time, in my opinion each of the actors did fantastic, also the direction by Peter Weir was impeccable each shot and scene reflected the rawness of the story which made me get more hooked into it and wanted to know why so many people liked this movie. Now I understand how special it was for many to see it, just by having Robin Williams in the story you know you are going to have someone who will teach you one or more lessons and who will also make you feel part of his own world and also the value of art in all its forms, like in The Dead Poets Society.
