A story with sad undertones - Review: Corpse Bride | 2005 | [Eng/Esp]

A week ago I shared with you my review about Coraline and I really enjoyed watching a stop motion movie so much that I decided to do it once a week with different movies and I just happened to see one on Facebook (sometimes coincidences are scary), but it was not exactly the one I wanted to see, but that one made me remember another movie and that is the one I want to talk about today, I am sure many people have seen it because it is a complete classic, but for those who haven't, I hope you enjoy the review. I want to talk to you about the movie called "Corpse Bride", let's start.

This movie was released on October 21, 2005, it belongs to the stop-motion animation style and its theme is fantasy, it was directed by Tim Burton and Mike Johnson. The story that we will find here (which is based on a Russian-Jewish folk tale) can be summarized in a very simple way, we will meet a very talented artist with the piano who had an arranged marriage with someone he did not know, but by accident ends up marrying another woman, a dead woman who ends up taking him to the world of the dead to which she belongs.
Let's talk about what happens in the movie, it begins with a very interesting introduction of our protagonist named Victor making a drawing of a butterfly, which he caught to draw, but then without causing him any harm. We move forward and are introduced to a rather gray town, not only visually but also because of the mood surrounding it. We meet Victor's parents, who are singing and telling us about the wedding rehearsal they are about to hold, where Victor will be marrying a girl from a high society family apparently and this has Victor's parents in high spirits.

On the other hand, the bride's parents also sing a song, but they are not at all happy with the marriage of their daughter to a family below their own, but they have reasons to do so, because, although they (the bride's parents) are an aristocratic family they are bankrupt and have no money at all, so they consider that marrying their daughter will get them out of the deepest poverty, so both families are only interested in joining together for convenience. Victor and Victoria (the bride) meet for the first time at this rehearsal and seem to like each other.

The rehearsal turns out to be a total disaster, so Victor goes out ashamed, he needs to practice his vows better to be able to get married the next day. While he tries to repeat his vows over and over again without achieving perfection, he goes into what seems to be a forest, repeats several times and several times forgets what he should say, until he decides to focus, He breathes and advances through the forest repeating the vows to perfection and simulating each of the steps he must follow and doing everything to perfection he ends up placing the ring on a root that simulated a hand (or so he thought), this causes a skeletal hand to hold it and out of the earth comes the corpse of a bride who accepts his marriage proposal.

Victor runs away frightened by what he has witnessed, but the cadaverous woman chases him and assures him that he is now her husband and gives him a kiss and so Victor faints. When he wakes up, he finds himself in the world of the dead, where he is clearly surrounded by people or animals that have died, so he is frightened and clarifies that he should not be there, that it was all a mistake and he must return, but will he really be able to return to the world of the living or is he destined to stay forever in the world of the dead?

From here I will start with my opinion about the movie and I will do it talking about the story, honestly I found it an incredible story told in just 1 hour and 10 minutes, something that is short for what we are used to, but we are presented with a complete and interesting story, with a quite dark background, but really dark when you pay attention to all the things that happen, but focusing on the story fully and not its meaning, it really is very good from beginning to end with the presentation and the outcome it has, I think it is very well built so you do not get distracted at any time and it succeeds, it keeps you expectant to what happens.
The theme of the music is something that honestly on many occasions I do not end up liking, but this time I loved it, the way of narrating the events through the songs seemed sublime, perhaps the fact that the songs are really telling something and it is not just to fill was what really made me like them and not only the lyrics I liked, also the musical aspect as such I loved, also the way of animating these songs as they were singing seemed to me also very good, it is a film that I consider has many positive aspects and almost no negative.

I want to talk a little bit more about the dark background aspect of the movie, from the beginning you can appreciate how the town is, somewhat depressing, so the stories that are presented here are also depressing, some are tragic, others sad and some that leave a lot to think about, so it seems to me that the story as such is strong in certain aspects, but these same are told in a quiet way or even not told at all so if you don't pay much attention things can go unnoticed, but if you really pay attention you will notice some things that are quite sad if we take them to the real world clearly, many things that can make us think about life and death and all this in a very short movie.
Something that this movie has that I also loved is the sense of humor, although I certainly consider that there are sad stories, these are addressed in a very comical way so I consider that in certain aspects are amortized and we get several smiles, I was laughing with many "smart" jokes that usually do and really made everything much more enjoyable, at least I was constantly laughing with these jokes and I would say that it is an innocent humor, but also somewhat gloomy if you understand the context clearly.

A curiosity that I would like to mention is the color aspect, at the beginning the film in the world of the living is completely in grayscale except for very few things, but the world of the dead is full of colors, I find it curious because I consider it a way to tell certain messages that are immersed in the film, for example in the world of the dead there is much happiness, but in the world of the living everything seems lifeless, perhaps it is the contrast that they wanted to show with their message that everything is not what it seems.
So far this review, I hope you liked it, honestly I loved writing it, I really enjoyed the movie, so if you haven't seen it, this is the sign you needed to discover it and watch it, it's really worth it and it's very entertaining and enjoyable if you are looking for a quiet story (if you don't think too much of the things that happen) to pass the time, this is your choice. Hace una semana les compartía mí reseña sobre Coraline y realmente me gustó tanto ver una película de stop motion que decidí hacerlo una vez a la semana con diferentes películas y justamente me salió una en Facebook (a veces las coincidencias dan miedo), pero no era exactamente la que quería ver, pero ésa me hizo recordar otra película y es de la que les quiero hablar el día de hoy, estoy seguro que muchas personas la han visto porque es un completo clásico, pero para aquellos que no, espero disfruten la reseña. Quiero hablarles de la película llamada “El cadáver de la novia”, comencemos.

Esta película fue estrenada el 21 de octubre del año 2005, pertenece al estilo de animación stop motion y su temática es fantasiosa, fue dirigida por Tim Burton y Mike Johnson. La historia que encontraremos aquí (que está basada en un cuento popular ruso-judío) puede ser resumida de una forma muy sencilla, conoceremos a un artista muy talentoso con el piano que tenía un matrimonio arreglado con alguien que no conocía, pero por accidente termina casándose con otra mujer, una mujer muerta que termina llevándolo al mundo de los muertos al que ella pertenece.
Hablemos de lo que sucede en la película, esta comienza con una introducción muy interesante de nuestro protagonista llamado Víctor realizando un dibujo de una mariposa, la cual atrapó para dibujar, pero luego sin causarle ningún daño. Avanzamos y se nos presenta un pueblo bastante gris, no sólo visualmente sino también por el animo que le rodea. Conocemos a los padres de Víctor, quienes cantan relatando sobre el ensayo de boda que están a punto de realizar, donde Víctor se casará con una chica de una familia de la alta sociedad al parecer y esto tiene a los padres de Víctor muy animados.

Por otro lado, los padres de la novia también cantan una canción, pero estos no están nada felices con el casamiento de su hija con una familia por debajo de la suya, pero tienen motivos para hacerlo, ya que, aunque ellos (los padres de la novia) sean una familia aristócrata se encuentran en bancarrota y no tienen nada de dinero, por lo que consideran que casar a su hija los sacará de la pobreza más profunda, por lo que ambas familias sólo les interesa unirse por conveniencia. Víctor y Victoria (la novia) se conocen por primera vez en este ensayo y parecen agradarse.

El ensayo resulta un total desastre, por lo que Víctor avergonzado sale, necesita practicar mejor sus votos para poder casarse al día siguiente. Mientras intenta repetir sus votos una y otra vez sin lograrlo a la perfección se va adentrando en lo que parece ser un bosque, repite varias veces y varias veces olvida lo que debe decir, hasta que decide centrarse, respira y avanza por el bosque repitiendo los votos a la perfección y simulando cada uno de los pasos que debe seguir y haciendo todo a la perfección termina por colocar el anillo en una raíz que simulaba una mano (o eso pensaba), esto ocasiona que una mano esquelética lo sujete y sale de la tierra el cadáver de una novia quien acepta su pedido de matrimonio.

Víctor sale corriendo y espantado por lo que ha presenciado, pero la mujer cadavérica le persigue y le asegura que ahora él es su marido y le da un beso y así Víctor se desmaya. Cuando despierta, se encuentra en el mundo de los muertos, donde claramente está rodeado de personas o animales que han muerto, por lo que se asusta y aclara que no debería estar allí, que todo ha sido un error y debe regresar, pero ¿realmente podrá regresar al mundo de los vivos o está destinado a quedarse por siempre en el mundo de los muertos?

A partir de aquí comenzaré con mi opinión sobre la película y lo haré hablando de la historia, honestamente me pareció una historia increíble contada en apenas 1 hora y 10 minutos, algo que es corto para lo que se está acostumbrado, pero nos presentan una historia completa a interesante, con un trasfondo bastante oscuro, pero realmente oscuro cuando le prestas atención a todas las cosas que ocurren, pero centrándome en la historia plenamente y no su significado, reamente es muy buena de principio a fin con la presentación y el desenlace que tiene, considero que está muy bien construida para que no te distraigas en ningún momento y lo logra, te mantiene expectante a lo que ocurre.
El tema de la música es algo que honestamente en muchas ocasiones no me termina de gustar, pero en esta ocasión me ha encantado, la forma de narrar los acontecimientos a través de las canciones me pareció sublime, quizás el hecho de que las canciones realmente están contando algo y no es sólo para rellenar fue lo que realmente hizo que me gustaran y no sólo la letra me gustó, también el aspecto musical como tal me ha encantado, además la forma de animar estas canciones según lo que iban cantando me pareció también muy bueno, es una película que considero tiene muchos aspectos positivos y casi ninguno negativo.

Quiero hablar un poco más sobre el aspecto del trasfondo oscuro de la película, desde un principio se aprecia el cómo es el pueblo, un tanto deprimente, por lo que las historias que se presentan aquí también lo son, algunas son trágicas, otras tristes y algunas que dejan mucho que pensar, por lo que me parece que la historia como tal es fuerte en ciertos aspectos, pero estos mismos son contados de una forma tranquila o incluso no se cuentan por lo que si no prestas mucha atención pueden pasar cosas desapercibidas, pero si realmente prestas atención notarás algunas cosas que resultan bastante tristes si los llevamos al mundo real claramente, muchas cosas que pueden hacernos pensar sobre la vida y la muerte y todo esto en una película muy corta.
Algo que tiene esta película que también me encantó es el sentido del humor, aunque ciertamente considero que hay historias tristes, estas son abordadas de una forma muy cómica por lo que considero que en ciertos aspectos son amortizadas y nos sacan diversas sonrisas, yo me estuve riendo con muchos chistes “inteligentes” que suelen hacer y realmente hacían que todo fuera mucho más ameno, por lo menos yo me estuve riendo constantemente con estos chistes y diría que es un humor inocente, pero también un tanto tétrico si se entiende el contexto claramente.

Una curiosidad que me gustaría mencionar es el aspecto del color, al principio la película en el mundo de los vivos está completamente en escala de grises a excepción de muy pocas cosas, pero el mundo de los muertos está lleno de colores, me parece curioso porque considero que es una forma de contar ciertos mensajes que están inmersos en la película, por ejemplo en el mundo de los muertos hay mucha felicidad, pero en el mundo de los vivos todo parece sin vida, quizás es el contraste que quisieron mostrar con su mensaje de que todo no es lo que parece.
Hasta aquí la reseña, espero que les haya gustado, honestamente me encantó escribirla, disfruté mucho de la película por lo que, si alguno no la ha visto, esta es la señal que estaban necesitando para descubrirla y verla, realmente vale totalmente la pena y es muy entretenida, además de disfrutable si buscas alguna historia tranquila (si no le das vueltas a muchas de las cosas que suceden) para pasar el rato, esta es tu elección. ¡Muchas gracias por pasarse por aquí!

Es curioso, me gusta el stop motion, he visto muchas películas realizadas con esta técnica y me gusta el trabajo de Tim Burton; y sin embargo, no he visto esta película aún, así que tu reseña será mi señal para verla pronto.
