Boy Kills World - Movie Review [EN - ES]

It seems that the action genre is being forced to follow the trend imposed by films such as the "John Wick" franchise; I think it is mandatory to create characters that are lethal, invincible and at the same time attractive machines, that have or create a mandatory connection with the audience and make them unforgettable; this description may be seen as something easy to achieve, but the reality is that not everything that tries to meet these requirements, will be successful because sometimes many depend on different factors which if not met, possibly these productions become a failure without deserving it and I think that happened with the film I am reviewing.

Parece que género de la acción se está obligando a seguir la tendencia impuesta por films como por ejemplo la franquicia de "John Wick"; creo que es obligatorio crear personajes que sean una máquina letal, invencible y a la vez atractiva, que tenga o que cree una obligatoria conexión con el público y hacerlos inolvidables; esta descripción podrá verse como algo fácil de alcanzar, pero la realidad es que no todo lo que tratan de cumplir esos requisitos, tendrán un éxito porque algunas veces muchos dependen de diferentes factores lo cuales a no cumplirse, posiblemente esas producciones se conviertan en un fracaso sin merecerlo y creo que eso ocurrió con el film a que hago reseña.

"Boy Kills World" is a dystopian, comedy and action film, which tells the story of "Boy" who from an early age has been prepared by "Shaman" to become a lethal weapon and fulfill the revenge against the family "Van Der Koy" led by "Hilda" who rules with an iron fist to a city that annually must provide a person to fulfill a sacrifice for their mandatary and thus "Keep the Peace" of the city, One of those sacrifices was Boy's mother and little sister, who were killed in front of him and that is why all this time he fed on the hatred created by those who took everything from him and that is why now they will have to pay.

"Boy Kills World" es un film distópico, comedia y acción, que relata la historia de "Boy" que desde temprana edad ha sido preparado por "Shaman" para convertirse en un arma letal y cumplir con la venganza contra la familia "Van Der Koy" liderada por "Hilda" quien gobierna con puño de hierro a una ciudad que anualmente debe proveer una persona para cumplir con un sacrificio para su mandataria y así "Mantener la Paz" de la ciudad, uno de esos sacrificios fue la madre y pequeña hermana de Boy, las cuales fueron asesinadas al frente de él y es por eso que todo este tiempo se alimentó del odio creado por quienes le quitaron todo y es por eso que ahora ellos deberán pagar.

Revenge stories will always have my attention and even more if there is a big influence in Asian films where martial arts are a main reference and that's what this film offers which is the first feature film made by the German director and screenwriter, Moritz Mohr; at the beginning of the review I named the influence of John Wick in how to make impressive action scenes, but I think Mohr will have seen films directed by Gareth Evans and will have taken something and generated good and funny action scenes, just the element of comedy and its introduction in that kind of sequences I liked because they do not burst, it does not feel out of place, much less forced, they have a purpose and that's the positive thing about the work of Mohr as a director.

The screenplay was co-written by Tyler Burton Smith and Arend Remmers, from a story created by Mohr along with Remmers; For the most part, revenge stories are repetitive and I personally don't have a problem with that, especially when the important thing about the film is to generate action scenes, which the story works as a simple excuse, but if I try to delve into a script that tells a revenge story about a group of people who took everything from a poor boy who now as a man will seek justice, I think that just by focusing on the protagonist and how he must deal with a revenge, it seems appropriate to point out the treatment of the disorder experienced by "Boy" as a character, as a victim and as defined, an instrument, a deadly weapon, I think that is perceived much more at the end when the good use of humor gives way to a great final fight. I won't say that the script is worthy of great accolades, but I think it is appropriate for this style of film.

Historias sobre venganzas siempre tendrán mi atención y más si existe una gran influencia en películas asiáticas en dónde las artes marciales son un principal referente y eso ofrece este film el cual es el primer largometraje que realiza el director y guionista alemán, Moritz Mohr; al principio de la reseña hice nombramiento a la influencia de John Wick en como hacer impresionantes escenas de acción, pero creo que Mohr habra visto films dirigidos por Gareth Evans y habrá tomado algo y generado buenas y divertidas escenas de acción, justamente el elemento de la comedia y su introducción en ese tipo de secuencias me gustó porque no irrumpen, no se siente fuera de lugar, ni mucho menos forzado, tienen un propósito y eso es de lo positivo del trabajo de Mohr como director.

El guion fue co escrito por Tyler Burton Smith y Arend Remmers, de una historia creada por Mohr junto a Remmers; en su mayoría, las historias de venganzas son repetitivas y personalmente no tengo problemas con eso y más cuando lo importante del film es generar escenas de acción lo cual la historia funciona como una simple excusa, pero si trato de profundizar en un guion que relata una venganza sobre un grupo de personas que le arrebataron todo a un pobre niño que ahora de hombre buscará hacer justicia, creo que justamente al enfocarme en el protagonista y el cómo debe lidiar con una venganza, me parece adecuado señalar el trato al trastorno que experimenta "Boy" como personaje, como víctima y tal como se define, un instrumento, un arma mortal, eso creo que se percibe mucho más al final cuando el buen uso del humor da paso para un gran combate final. No diré que el guion sea digno de grandes reconocimientos, pero creo que es adecuado para este estilo de películas.

Being completely honest, what motivated me to see this film was that the actress, Jessica Rothe, was one of the main characters of the film and her interpretation of "June 27" is excellent, she is lethal, tough, very dynamic and committed in the action scenes, a great and important rival for "Boy" who is played by Bill Skarsgård, which this is his first of two action films that counts as the main actor; I liked his performance in the action scenes, I think his commitment in the many fight scenes and gunfights are good, but I think I would have liked more expression in his face, as his character suffers from deafness and is mute, but I think the "Inner Voice" of his character makes it better. I want to mention the brief work of Andrew Koji who I had trouble recognizing at first with his interpretation of "Basho", he is my favorite character in the film and does a great job; likewise, the interpretation of Yayan Ruhian as "Shaman" is very good creating an immediate impact the moment he enters the scene.

Siendo completamente sincero, lo que me motivó a ver este film fue que la actriz, Jessica Rothe, era una de las protagonistas del film y su interpretación de "June 27" es excelente, es letal, ruda, muy dinámica y comprometida en las escenas de acción, una gran e importante rival para "Boy" quien es interpretado por Bill Skarsgård, el cual este es su primero de dos films de acción que cuenta como actor principal; me gustó su desempeño en las escenas de acción, creo que su compromiso en las muchas escenas de combates y tiroteos son buenas, pero creo que me hubiera gustado más expresión en su rostro, ya que su personaje padece de sordera y es mudo, pero creo que la "Voz Interior" de su personaje lo hace mejor. Quiero mencionar el breve trabajo de Andrew Koji a quien me costó reconocer en un principio con su interpretación de "Basho", es mi personaje favorito del film y hace un gran trabajo; de igual manera, la interpretación de Yayan Ruhian como "Shaman" es muy buena creando un inmediato impacto al momento de entrar a escena.

I liked Boy Kills World and I regret that it did not have the support from critics and who was in charge of the distribution of the film, which is the opposite of what happened with the action film, "The Beekeeper" which in my opinion is a bad and boring production, nothing to do with what is this film that if it is true, has cartoonish characters, exaggerated performances, but I just think that for that kind of production could not be done otherwise, but despite that I understand that it did not become a success at the box office because possibly it would not attract large masses and only focuses on a certain audience and I am sure that when it is released on a streaming platform it will possibly have a recognition, perhaps the acceptance it deserves because it is an entertaining, fun, dynamic, comic, a nice story of revenge, unoriginal, but with good action scenes especially the final fight; I can say that this film exceeded the few expectations I had before watching it.

Me gustó Boy Kills World y lamento que no tuvo el apoyo por parte de críticos y quién se encargó de la distribución del film, cosa contraria que si sucedió con el film de acción, "The Beekeeper" el cual en mi opinión es una mala y aburrida producción, nada que ver con lo que es este film que si es cierto, tiene personajes caricaturescos, actuaciones exageradas, pero justamente creo que para ese tipo de producción no pudo hacerse de otra manera, pero a pesar de eso entiendo que no se convirtiera en un éxito en la taquilla porque posiblemente no atraería grandes masas y solo se enfoca a cierto público y es que estoy seguro de que cuando sea estrenada en alguna plataforma de streaming posiblemente tenga un reconocimiento, tal vez la aceptación que merece porque es un film entretenido, divertido, dinámico, cómico, una agradable historia de venganza, poco original, pero con buenas escenas de acción en especial la pelea final; puedo decir que este film supero las pocas expectativas que tenía antes de verla.
