Damsel - Movie Review [EN - ES]

In the past, it was common to see how an actress or actor, after achieving fame in a television production, made the leap from the small screen to the big screen; nowadays, it is the productions of streaming services that have the possibility to promote and give fame to certain actors preparing them for a possible film career, being the difference, the "ease" in which they can move in a comfort zone created by the same streaming platform, without the need to know if they are a movie star that can generate large amount of revenue just by appearing their name in a production; in my opinion a great example is the actress Millie Bobby Brown who in her young, but fruitful career, her work is based on what she has done on Netflix.

Anteriormente, era habitual ver cómo una actriz o actor después de alcanzar la fama en alguna producción televisiva, realice el salto de la pantalla chica a la grande; en el tiempo actual, son las producciones de servicios de streaming que tiene la posibilidad de promocionar y dar fama a ciertos actores preparándolos para una posible carrera cinematográfica, siendo la diferencia, la "facilidad" en que puede transitar en una zona de confort creada por la misma plataforma de streaming, sin la necesidad de saber si es una estrella del cine que puede generar gran cantidad de recaudación con tan solo aparecer su nombre en una producción; en mi opinión un gran ejemplo es la actriz Millie Bobby Brown quien en su joven, pero fructífera carrera, su trabajo se basa en lo que realizado en Netflix.

"Damsel" is the new Netflix production, a fantasy film that tells the story of Princess "Elodie", who along with her sister, father and stepmother, are the rulers of a small kingdom which is hit by drought and famine and will soon have to face the cold of winter; Among so many problems, the visit of a messenger from the kingdom of Aurea seems to be the salvation that "Lord Bayford" was waiting for, because the prince of Aurea has chosen Elodie to be his wife and in the future rule together a great kingdom full of riches; until now everything is happiness and perfection, but the kingdom of Aurea hides a serious secret, which will make Eloide must show strength and courage to survive and save his family.

"Damsel" es la nueva producción de Netflix, una película de fantasía que narra la historia de la princesa "Elodie", quien junto a su hermana, padre y madrastra, son los gobernantes de un pequeño reino el cual es golpeado por la sequía y hambruna y que próximamente se deberá enfrentar al frío del invierno; entre tantos problemas, la visita de un mensajero del reino de Aurea parece ser la salvación que estaba esperando el "Lord Bayford" y es que el príncipe de Aurea, ha elegido a Elodie para que sea su esposa y en un futuro gobernar juntos un gran reino lleno de riquezas; hasta este momento todo es felicidad y perfección, pero el Reino de Aurea esconde un grave secreto, lo cual hará que Eloide deba demostrar fuerza y valentía para poder sobrevivir y así salvar a su familia.

This film is one of those that I did not want to see, but if you are given the choice between "Madame Web" and this film, there is no doubt that I would choose this film which I had not seen negative or positive opinions and that made me create the expectation that at least meets to be entertaining and I can say that at the moment it is, more specifically, its second act is entertaining, the cost of production is noticeable and it is more than anything by a correct use of CGI, something very contrary to what was seen in the third act and final, where the scenery, animation and lighting are very poor, you can see the false and anticlimactic.

The main theme of the story, refers to do whatever it takes to achieve a goal; whatever the way to achieve it; the script offers that definition of the story from its main scenes and its handling in the story is what I liked the most, the other thing is that weak transit in relation to the horror genre which I would have liked to develop more, to have more weight with respect to the pagan, the offering, the sacrifice, that madness for the sacrifice, that would have given more maturity to this story that tries to cover the narrative holes with very simple and boring resolutions.

Esta película entra en ese grupo de las que no quería ver, pero si te dan a elegir entre "Madame Web" y este film, no hay duda que iba a elegir este film el cual no había visto opiniones ni negativas, ni positivas y eso me hizo crear la expectativa de que al menos cumpla con ser entretenida y puedo decir que por los momentos lo es, más especifico, su segundo acto es entretenido, se nota el costo de la producción y es más que nada por un correcto uso del CGI, algo muy contrario a lo visto en el tercer acto y final, en donde las escenografías, animación e iluminación son muy pobres, se nota lo falso y es anticlimático.

El tema principal de la historia, hace referencia de hacer lo posible para obtener un cometido; sea cual sea la manera de lograrlo; el guion ofrece esa definición de la historia desde sus escenas principales y su manejo en la historia es lo que más me agradó, lo otro es ese débil transitar en lo referente al género del terror lo cual me hubiera gustado que se desarrollara más, que tuviera más peso con respecto a lo pagano, la ofrenda, el sacrificio, esa locura por el sacrificio, eso hubiera dado más madurez a esta historia que trata de tapar los hoyos narrativos con resoluciones muy sencillas y aburridas.

I have a theory or opinion about the decision that Millie Bobby Brown starred in this film and it is that Netflix needed her to be active in the view of their fans and everything related to the entertainment world waiting for the premiere of the final season of "Stranger Things", this is something understandable on the part of Netflix, since Millie is a great project for the company, but this specific role where she plays a young woman, does not stop showing characteristics of a teenager, she is not perceived as someone adult and I do not blame her at all, but the script does not offer a better interpretation and I say this because her performance in the sequel of "Enola Holmes" her character is showing elements of maturity corresponding to her age; I hope that Netflix and herself as an actress will take the risk to take different jobs, get out of that comfort zone and prove herself as an actress.

Tengo una teoría u opinión sobre la decisión de que Millie Bobby Brown haya protagonizado este film y es que Netflix necesitaba que ella estuviera activa en la vista de sus fans y de todo lo referente al mundo del entretenimiento esperando el estreno de la temporada final de "Stranger Things", esto es algo entendible por parte de Netflix, ya que Millie es un gran proyecto para la empresa, pero este rol en específico en donde interpreta a una joven mujer, no deja de mostrar características de una adolescente, no se percibe como alguien adulto y no la culpo en todo a ella, sino que el guion no ofrece una mejor interpretación y esto lo digo porque su actuación en la secuela de "Enola Holmes" su personaje va mostrando elementos de madurez correspondiente a su edad; ojalá que Netflix y ella misma como actriz se arriesgue a tomar diferentes trabajos, salir de esa zona de confort y probarse como actriz.

I found Damsel to be an average to bad film; it's repetitive what I will say regarding a Netflix film, but it's another example where they don't know how to end a story and I think this film should be taken as a direct example of the above; another element that is also repeated in many Netflix films is the potential to be a better production, but it misses an opportunity to do something better and it is not only for not delving into the horror genre, but it could have done better action scenes to turn Millie Bobby Brown, into an excellent Final Girl and why not, into a new action heroine, instead it is something generic, boring and predictable; another Netflix film that will be immediately forgotten.

Damsel me pareció un film de regular a malo; es repetitivo lo que diré con respecto a un film de Netflix, pero es otro ejemplo en dónde no saben cómo terminar una historia y creo que esta película debería ser tomada como un ejemplo directo de lo antes descrito; otro elemento que también se repite en muchas películas de Netflix es el potencial de ser una mejor producción, pero se pierde oportunidad de hacer algo mejor y no solo es por no profundizar en el género del terror, sino que se pudo hacer mejores escenas de acción convertir a Millie Bobby Brown, en una excelente Final Girl y porque no, en una nueva heroína de acción, en cambio es algo genérico, aburrido y predecible; otra película de Netflix que sera olvidada de manera inmediata.
