Elemental - Movie Review [ES - EN]

Por mucho tiempo, las producciones de Pixar eran esperadas por un gran número de fans que se deleitaban con sus originales y maravillosas historias junto a un diverso estilo de animación; en los últimos años, con la aparición de los servicios de streaming y en mi opinión, malas decisiones de Walt Disney Pictures, en decidir que película apoyar o no, el público pareciera perder interés en estas producciones, un claro ejemplo es el film a qué hago reseña en esta publicación y que al momento de ser estrenada en las salas de cine, pareciera que se convertirá en un nuevo fracaso de taquilla, pero así como sucede en estas historias motivadoras de esa casa de animación, el final fue maravilloso.

For a long time, Pixar's productions were awaited by a great number of fans who were delighted with their original and wonderful stories together with a diverse animation style; In recent years, with the emergence of streaming services and in my opinion, bad decisions of Walt Disney Pictures, in deciding which film to support or not, the public seems to lose interest in these productions, a clear example is the film that I review in this publication and that when it was released in theaters, it seems that it will become a new box office failure, but as happens in these motivating stories of this animation house, the ending was wonderful.

"Elemental" es la única producción de Pixar estrenada en este año; esta película relatas historia de las vivencias de diferentes elementos que residen en un lugar conocido como "Element City"; en específico de "Ember Lumen", una chica de Fuego que junto a sus padres dirigen un local enfocado para quienes son también de fuego y es que en esa gran ciudad, el único elemento que no termina de encajar muy bien es justamente el fuego y por eso son una comunidad muy unida, pero a la vez alejada de los demás; un día, esa separación será difícil de mantener y es que ver deberá unir fuerza con un inspector de la ciudad llamado "Wade Ripple" un sentimental, pero agradable sujeto que la ayudara en lo que pueda para salvar el local del padre de Ember, la única particularidad de Wade es que él es de Agua; esa gran diferencia no evitara la conexión entre ambos, una unión que traerá inconvenientes más que nada para Ember que por las creencias de su padre, deberá verse obligada a seguir sueños impuestos o alcanzar los propios.

"Elemental" is the only Pixar production released this year; this film tells the story of the experiences of different elements that reside in a place known as "Element City"; specifically of "Ember Lumen", a girl of fire that along with her parents run a local focused for those who are also of fire and is that in this great city, the only element that does not end up fitting very well is precisely the fire and so they are a close-knit community, but at the same time away from others; One day, this separation will be difficult to maintain and it is that Ver will have to join forces with a city inspector named "Wade Ripple" a sentimental but nice guy who will help her in any way he can to save the place of Ember's father, the only particularity of Wade is that he is Water; this great difference will not prevent the connection between the two, a union that will bring inconveniences more than anything for Ember that by the beliefs of his father, must be forced to follow imposed dreams or achieve their own.

En el primer párrafo de esta publicación hice referencia sobre el interés del público por ciertas producciones de Pixar y siendo sincero, no tenía muchas expectativas sobre esta historia que sé que iba a ver en algún momento y justamente por eso me mantuve alejado de ver trailers y de leer breves opiniones y reseñas para no arruinar mi experiencia con este film que en mi opinión, tenía el peso de hacerse fuerte en la taquilla local e internacional después del mal desempeño del film "Lightyear". Este film fue dirigido por Peter Sohn, es la segunda vez que cumple ese rol, la primera vez fue en "The Good Dinosaur", historia también con un trasfondo familiar y la necesidad de crecer y ser independiente; en mi opinión está película es sumamente sencilla, aunque no hay nada espectacular en las imágenes y eso no lo digo como algo malo; todo es muy cargado con los diferentes diseños característicos de cada elemento dentro de la ciudad, lo cual es necesario para el relato; posiblemente está de las pocas veces en dónde la animación es simple, pero para mí fue perfecta.

El guion fue escrito por el mismo Sohn, junto a John Hoberg, Kat Likkel y Brenda Hsueh y es magnífico, no me voy a cansar de escribir esto, pero la historia es simple y en mi opinión eso la hace mejor; me gusta que use elementos de drama familiar; las presiones o preocupaciones que pueden sentir nuestros padres y el reflejo que crea en los hijos; ese es un tema muy importante el cual abre camino para el desarrollo de la historia de Ember, la cual es un perfecto "Coming of Age" por todo lo que tiene que descubrir de sí misma mientras sin querer se aleja de su zona de confort y esos temas se complementan muy bien en una historia de amor, una muy bien relatada, muy cómoda y divertida de ver; el guion con el correcto balance de sus temas, es de lo mejor de esta película.

In the first paragraph of this publication I made reference to the public's interest in certain Pixar productions and to be honest, I did not have many expectations about this story that I know I was going to see at some point and that is precisely why I stayed away from watching trailers and reading brief opinions and reviews so as not to ruin my experience with this film that in my opinion, had the weight to become strong at the local and international box office after the poor performance of the film "Lightyear". This film was directed by Peter Sohn, it is the second time he plays this role, the first time was in "The Good Dinosaur", story also with a family background and the need to grow up and be independent; in my opinion this film is extremely simple, although there is nothing spectacular in the images and I don't say that as something bad; everything is very loaded with the different characteristic designs of each element in the city, which is necessary for the story; possibly this is one of the few times where the animation is simple, but for me it was perfect.

The script was written by Sohn himself, along with John Hoberg, Kat Likkel and Brenda Hsueh and it is superb, I won't get tired of writing this, but the story is simple and in my opinion that makes it better; I like that it uses elements of family drama; the pressures or worries our parents may feel and the reflection it creates in the children; that is a very important theme which paves the way for the development of Ember's story, which is a perfect "Coming of Age" for all that she has to discover about herself as she unwittingly steps out of her comfort zone and those themes complement each other very well in a love story, a very well told, very comfortable and fun to watch; the script with the right balance of its themes, is one of the best of this movie.

La animación me ha encantado, sé que escribí que no existe paisajes o imágenes a exaltar, pero en esta oportunidad voy a referirme al diseño de los personajes; me gustó la diferencia entre cada uno de los elementos, algo muy válido, ya que sus diferentes características son fundamentales aunque en esta oportunidad la historia se enfoca más en los elementos del Agua y Fuego, siendo vistos muy brevemente los demás. El diseño de Ember y Wade, posiblemente tengan referencia a otras animaciones de Pixar, pero para mí fue inevitable no comparar como por ejemplo a la animación que usa "Cartoon Saloon" y a otras como de "Snoopy"; por ejemplo el diseño de Ember y de las demás representantes del Fuego, es alejado al típico diseño que observamos en los films de Pixar, no parece que se usa la animación digital, sino la convencional; algo diferente con Wade, el cual es el típico personaje de Pixar y en dónde encontré el parecido en sus gestos y hasta diseño con los personajes de Snoopy; ambos personajes son perfectos, muy bien diseñados y escritos.

I know that I wrote that there are no landscapes or images to exalt, but this time I will refer to the design of the characters; I liked the difference between each of the elements, something very valid, since their different characteristics are fundamental, although this time the story focuses more on the elements of Water and Fire, being seen very briefly the others. The design of Ember and Wade, possibly have reference to other Pixar animations, but for me it was inevitable not to compare as for example to the animation used in "Cartoon Saloon" and others like "Snoopy"; for example the design of Ember and the other representatives of Fire, is far from the typical design that we see in Pixar films, it does not seem that digital animation is used, but the conventional one; something different with Wade, which is the typical Pixar character and where I found the resemblance in his gestures and even design with the characters of Snoopy; both characters are perfect, very well designed and written.

Que grata sorpresa me lleve con "Elemental"; esta es una historia que estoy seguro de que la premisa de ser un romance entre diferentes elementos posiblemente pudo no motivar en un principio al público; la realidad es que el romance es importante porque motiva a quien considero la principal protagonista, a Ember, de descubrir al mundo, de tomar riesgos, de no vivir en frustración, sino descubrir quién en realidad es, ese es el verdadero mensaje del film, el estar abierto a diferentes opciones, a arriesgar para alcanzar algo que no esperabas obtener, lograr lo que se considera imposible; este es un gran éxito de Pixar, una historia muy bien escrita, aunque algo lenta de captar porque su primer acto podrá confundir a los espectadores, pero desde el segundo hasta el final, en mi opinión se hace perfecta; de lo mejor del año.

What a pleasant surprise I had with "Elemental"; this is a story that I am sure that the premise of being a romance between different elements could possibly not motivate the audience at first; the reality is that the romance is important because it motivates who I consider the main protagonist, Ember, to discover the world, to take risks, not to live in frustration, but to discover who she really is, that is the true message of the film, to be open to different options, to risk to achieve something you did not expect to get, to achieve what is considered impossible; this is a great success of Pixar, a very well written story, although a little slow to grasp because its first act may confuse viewers, but from the second to the end, in my opinion it becomes perfect; one of the best of the year.
