Jane Schoenbrun, dirigió y escribió esta película que más que ser completamente de terror, es un coming of age, con elementos psicológicos y sí, con episodios terroríficos; esa es la base de una historia que primeramente explora la adolescencia a mediados de los 90’, desde el punto de vista de dos solitarios personajes que consiguen refugio y la amistad en el momento en que una serie de TV les ofrece respuesta a preguntas a la que posiblemente ellos no estén tan preparados para hacer. Mi primera impresión en esta película es sobre los efectos de la soledad y aislamiento que padecen adolescentes los cuales les impulsa a generar una extraña conexión (en esta caso) con un TV Show; es un coming of age típico lo cual se hace algo tétrico mientras la soledad va haciendo estragos en la mente de los protagonistas, pero la realidad es que está historia ofrece más, en dónde a pesar de seguir el lineamiento de las películas de ese género, usa de muy buena manera, la nostalgia y la fantasía para relatar una terrorífica, dramática y real historia de adolescentes.

La fotografía así como la edición y dirección son excelentes, está película contiene imágenes melancólicas, muy coloridas con un uso de filtro que hace recordar a producciones televisivas y vídeo musicales de los 90’ y como es de esperar, la nostalgia se hace presente, en especial en los dos primeros actos del film; esas características me hace pensar que Schoenbrun planeó muy bien la creación de este film en dónde a pesar de que la historia prosigue en la época actual, de igual manera no pierde ese estilo de hacer shows televisivos hace 30 años, los cuales son la mayor influencia de esta película. La transición de la realidad y lo fantasioso es bastante crudo y muy notorio, en eso se recrea o posiblemente rinde homenaje a los "Fan Films" lo cual me pareció perfecto por el auge que tuvo entre los 90' y 2000; ese aspecto da una sensación de ser una "Película B” y seguramente es eso lo que se le puede relacionar al género del terror.

My first impression of this film is about the effects of loneliness and isolation suffered by teenagers which drives them to generate a strange connection (in this case) with a TV Show; it is a typical coming of age which becomes a bit creepy while loneliness is wreaking havoc in the minds of the protagonists, but the reality is that this story offers more, where despite following the line of films of that genre, it uses in a very good way, nostalgia and fantasy to tell a terrifying, dramatic and real story of teenagers.

The cinematography as well as the editing and direction are excellent, this film contains melancholic images, very colorful with a use of filter that reminds us of television productions and music videos of the 90's and as expected, nostalgia is present, especially in the first two acts of the film; These characteristics make me think that Schoenbrun planned very well the creation of this film where although the story continues in the present time, it does not lose that style of making television shows 30 years ago, which are the major influence of this film. The transition from reality and fantasy is quite crude and very noticeable, in that it recreates or possibly pays homage to the "Fan Films" which seemed perfect to me because of the boom it had between the 90's and 2000; that aspect gives a feeling of being a "B Movie" and surely that is what can be related to the horror genre.

Las actuaciones son buenas aunque la decisión de contar con los actores que protagonizan la historia puede crear cierta disyuntiva con respecto a la edad que deben representar en un momento en específico de la historia, el más notorio ejemplo de lo antes descrito es la interpretación de "Owen" por parte de Justice Smith, quien hace presencia en la historia cuando ese personaje debe tener al rededor de 14 años de edad; su interpretación de un adolescente bastante retraído, solitario, melancólico y deprimente puede no ser el adecuado por su aspecto, no importa que tan bajo y suave sea su tono de voz, parece ser que a muchas personas no sintieron agrado por su trabajo; ahora personalmente creo que el actor hace una buena interpretación, ya que las características de "Owen" siempre serán las mismas en diferentes etapas de su vida, es un personaje que rehusa de cambiar y esa es una o la gran característica de ese personaje en esta historia. Con respecto al desempeño actoral de Jack Haven como "Maddy", ella es todo lo contrario a Owen, aunque su valentía puede ser la causa de dolor o más soledad de la que ella puede sentir, en eso Hacen hace un buen trabajo, su actitud es la mejor, es alguien frontal, vulnerable, fuerte y extrañamente independiente, eso lo digo por su deseo de ayudar para que otros no sufran lo que ella está padeciendo.

Regarding the acting performance of Jack Haven as "Maddy", she is the complete opposite of Owen, although her bravery may be the cause of pain or more loneliness than she may feel, in that Hacen does a good job, her attitude is the best, she is someone frontal, vulnerable, strong and strangely independent, I say that because of her desire to help so that others do not suffer what she is suffering.

I Saw the TV Glow es de esas películas que son mal definidas y promocionadas; encasillar está producción en simplemente el género del terror es erróneo, ya que la considero un drama juvenil, con elementos psicológicos y por supuesto de terror, es un excelente conglomerado que me dejó pensando por largo tiempo después de verla y que me hizo investigar su más de sus protagonistas y de quién creó toda esta historia; justamente eso me hizo entender su verdadero significado con respecto a la transición de niño a adolescente, así como el de definir su identidad; todas esas sensaciones pueden causar alejamiento, soledad, dolor y tristeza, se crea un vacío en donde no sabes quién en realidad eres y en búsqueda de una respuesta puedes aceptar cualquier ayuda venga de dónde venga, un lugar de confort que podrá funcionar como un salvavidas, pero que nunca será algo definitivo, creo que es eso lo que también hace que esa historia pueda lidiar con el terror al ser algo real sin importar que tanta imagen distorsionada o terrorífica sirva en su relato. Pude leer que esta película no es para todo público y no creo que sea algo pretencioso decirlo, pero si quien decida verla, debe saber que esta es una película que no inventa nada en el género de los coming of age, aunque sí diré que es una de las mejores películas que he visto en este año.

I Saw the TV Glow is one of those movies that are poorly defined and promoted; to pigeonhole this production in simply the horror genre is wrong, since I consider it a youth drama, with psychological elements and of course horror, it is an excellent conglomerate that left me thinking for a long time after watching it and that made me investigate more about its protagonists and who created all this story; precisely that made me understand its true meaning regarding the transition from child to teenager, as well as defining your identity; all those feelings can cause alienation, loneliness, pain and sadness, a void is created where you don't know who you really are and in search of an answer you can accept any help wherever it comes from, a place of comfort that may work as a lifeline, but that will never be something definitive, I think that's what also makes this story can deal with the terror of being something real no matter how much distorted or terrifying image serves in its story. I could read that this movie is not for all audiences and I don't think it is something pretentious to say, but if whoever decides to watch it, should know that this is a movie that does not invent anything in the coming of age genre, although I will say that it is one of the best movies I have seen this year.
