La Sociedad de la Nieve - Movie Review [ES - EN]

A mediados de los 90' decidí ver "VIVEN", una película la cual no tenía conocimiento de su historia y pensaba que era una aventura de un grupo de personas que deberían sobrevivir en un duro viaje por montañas heladas; no estaba del todo equivocado en mi opinión, pero la realidad es que eso era una porción de una historia fuerte, basada en un hecho real y justamente esa importante característica la había obviado por no tener conocimiento de ese terrible accidente; eso me desconectó del film y del cual tengo vagos recuerdos; al pasar tantos años y de saber la historia de lo que ocurrido en Los Andes, es momento de ver este nuevo film basado en ese accidente, pero con una perspectiva diferente.

In the mid 90's I decided to see "VIVEN", a film which I had no knowledge of its history and I thought it was an adventure of a group of people who should survive in a hard journey through icy mountains; I was not entirely wrong in my opinion, but the reality is that it was a portion of a strong story, based on a real event and just that important feature I had ignored because I had no knowledge of that terrible accident; That disconnected me from the film and of which I have vague memories; having spent so many years and knowing the story of what happened in Los Andes, it is time to see this new film based on that accident, but with a different perspective.

"La Sociedad de la Nieve", producción original de Netflix, película la cual recibió la nominación a los Premios Oscars como Mejor Película Internacional en representación de España y que hace tan solo días fue proclamada ganadora hasta de trece Premios Goya, relata la historia de los hechos ocurridos en octubre de 1972, cuando en un avión donde viajaba el equipo de Rugby "Old Christians Club" de Montevideo, Uruguay, se estrella en Los Andes y desde ese momento la historia de un grupo de jóvenes se convertirá en drama, terror y desesperación, pero a pesar de todo grave obstáculo, deberán hacer lo imposible para mantener la esperanza de ser salvados o de salvarse a sí mismos.

"The Snow Society", a Netflix original production, a film which received an Oscar nomination for Best International Film on behalf of Spain and which just days ago was proclaimed winner of up to thirteen Goya Awards, tells the story of the events that occurred in October 1972, when a plane carrying the Rugby team "Old Christians Club" from Montevideo, Uruguay, crashes in Los Andes and from that moment the story of a group of young people will turn into drama, terror and despair, but despite all serious obstacles, they must do the impossible to maintain the hope of being saved or to save themselves.

Esta nueva película basada en el accidente aereo y sus sobrevivientes, fue dirigido por J. A. Bayona, quien tiene experiencia en dirigir películas basadas en hechos reales como por ejemplo fue "The Impossible" (2012); en este nuevo film tiene el esplendor de contar con hermosos y terroríficos escenarios para el relato de tan fuerte historia; Bayona nos muestra la dura situación de los sobrevivientes y su lucha contra la naturaleza que se convierte en un poderoso enemigo, pero no solamente es eso, también desde el lente de su cámara podemos observar el cambio radical de cada uno de los personajes de esta historia, cambio físico, psicológico, su obligada adaptación a un lugar y por supuesto los ataques que van recibiendo mientras transcurre los días sin ser salvados; es un trabajo formidable, poderoso, desesperanzador y a la vez lleno de esperanza y es que con sus imágenes potencia un relato profundo de esos acontecimientos.

El guion escrito por Bayona, junto a Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques y Nicolás Casariego, hace que quienes ven la película conozcan mejor a las víctimas y sobrevivientes; es un breve, pero justo uso del tiempo en escena de cada uno de los personajes los que nos hace que en momentos específicos mientras transcurre el film, tengamos ese sentimiento de conexión y los que nos hace parte de la necesidad, de pensar si está bien o no lo que hicieron, de ser parte de la perdida de la cordura, de su tristeza, desesperación, la perdida total de toda esperanza y por supuesto, de la hermandad entre todos; eso desde el punto de vista de algunos de los sobrevivientes lo cual con su relato hace magnífica está historia.

This new film based on the plane crash and its survivors, was directed by J. A. Bayona, who has experience in directing films based on real events as for example was "The Impossible" (2012); in this new film he has the splendor of having beautiful and terrifying scenarios for the telling of such a strong story; Bayona**_ shows us the harsh situation of the survivors and their struggle against nature that becomes a powerful enemy, but not only that, also from the lens of his camera we can observe the radical change of each of the characters in this story, physical, psychological change, their forced adaptation to a place and of course the attacks they are receiving as the days go by without being saved; it is a formidable, powerful, hopeless and yet full of hope work and is that with its images power a profound account of these events.

The script written by Bayona, together with Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques and Nicolás Casariego, makes those who see the film get to know the victims and survivors better; It is a brief, but fair use of time in the scene of each of the characters that makes us, in specific moments during the film, have that feeling of connection and makes us part of the need to think if it is right or not what they did, to be part of the loss of sanity, of their sadness, despair, the total loss of all hope and of course, of the brotherhood among all; that from the point of view of some of the survivors, which with their story makes this story magnificent.

Las actuaciones son muy buenas, en especial las de Enzo Vogrincic quien interpreta a "Numa Turcatti", un joven hombre con mucho por vivir y por lo que se muestra en esta historia, pareciera que fue un hombre con convicción fuerte, con la necesidad de ayudar, de aportar a un grupo de personas muy unidas y que él puso ser considerado como un igual; la historia se relata desde su punto de vista por un buen tiempo y eso me pareció magnífico, correcto porque ayuda a tomar posición sobre todo lo que deben hacer para sobrevivir y de como deben vivir con eso. Otro personaje que toma el relevo de la narrativa es el de "Roberto Canessa" interpretado por Matías Recalt; un personaje que por su aspecto pareciera tener una definición de débil, pero la realidad es que es el más ágil y más centrado de todos; es un líder, aunque también da la sensación de pensar primero en él y después de los demás, pero creo que desde su vocación por la medicina, le hace pensar en ser directo y no crear falsas esperanzas; su narrativa es dura y seca, nada conciliatoria como la de Nando, pero de igual manera es la adecuada para un momento en específico de la película.

The performances are very good, especially those of Enzo Vogrincic who plays "Numa Turcatti", a young man with a lot to live for and from what is shown in this story, it seems that he was a man with strong conviction, with the need to help, to contribute to a group of very united people and that he put to be considered as an equal; the story is told from his point of view for a good time and that seemed to me magnificent, right because it helps to take position on everything they must do to survive and how they must live with that. Another character that takes over the narrative is that of "Roberto Canessa" played by Matías Recalt; a character that by his appearance would seem to have a definition of weak, but the reality is that he is the most agile and most focused of all; He is a leader, although he also gives the sensation of thinking first of himself and then of others, but I believe that his vocation for medicine makes him think about being direct and not creating false hopes; his narrative is hard and dry, not at all conciliatory like Nando's, but it is still the right one for a specific moment in the film.

La Sociedad de la Nieve me sorprendió mucho, superó mis expectativas al ser una historia que te engancha desde un primer momento; es una historia dura, desgarradora, triste, con muchos elementos de terror, drama y por supuesto de sobrevivencia; esas características son tan bien usadas en esta producción que la hacen magnífica y de por supuesto es una de las mejores películas que he visto en este año que apenas comienza. Sé que muchas personas ya han visto este film, pero sin ninguna duda quien no lo haya hecho debería darle oportunidad, es una historia tan bien relatada que a pesar de ser basada en un hecho real, lo importante es como usa el sufrimiento por el accidente, la desesperación, pero aún más primeramente por la culpa y después por ser víctima de la situación que están viviendo que le hace perder toda sanidad mental para hacer lo posible para sobrevivir; sé que existe dificultad en la competencia para ganar el Oscar a Mejor Película Internacional, pero si llega a obtener ese premio, solo puedo decir que sería justo ganador.

The Snow Society surprised me a lot, it exceeded my expectations as it is a story that hooks you from the first moment; it is a hard story, heartbreaking, sad, with many elements of terror, drama and of course survival; those characteristics are so well used in this production that make it magnificent and of course it is one of the best films I have seen in this year that has just begun. I know that many people have already seen this film, but without a doubt anyone who has not seen it should give it a chance, it is a story so well told that despite being based on a real event, the important thing is how it uses the suffering of the accident, the desperation, but even more firstly because of the guilt and then for being a victim of the situation they are living that makes them lose all mental sanity to do everything possible to survive; I know there is difficulty in the competition to win the Oscar for Best International Film, but if it gets that award, I can only say that it would be a fair winner.
