Nimona - Movie Review [ES - EN]

En este año, la animación ha estado muy bien representada en las salas de cine en esta mitad del mundo, hago esa acotación más que nada por "Suzume" film japonés que junto a producciones americanas como "The Super Mario Bros." y "Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse", se estrenaron hace semanas y por supuesto meses, siendo aclamadas más que nada por su animación, sé que hay otras que lamentablemente no tuvieron un mejor desempeño en taquilla y por eso no serán consideradas como un éxito, pero hay una producción que llama la atención por lo que tuvo que luchar para que por fin sea estrenada; me refiero a una nueva película original de Netflix que es (en mi opinión) una de las sorpresas del 2023.

This year, animation has been very well represented in theaters in this half of the world, I make that remark mostly because of "Suzume" Japanese film that along with American productions such as "The Super Mario Bros." and "Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse", were released weeks and of course months ago, being acclaimed more than anything else for their animation, I know there are others that unfortunately did not have a better performance at the box office and therefore will not be considered a success, but there is a production that draws attention for what it had to fight to finally be released; I am referring to a new Netflix original movie that is (in my opinion) one of the surprises of 2023.

"Nimona" es un film animado, con elementos de fantasía, ciencia-ficción, aventura y comedia, estando basada en una novela gráfica del 2015, el cual lleva el mismo nombre y fue escrita por ND Stevenson; en este film veremos la historia de como un reino se hizo poderoso desde el momento en que su más grande y legendaria heroína, "Gloreth", derrotó a poderosos monstruos que querían invadir y destruir su hogar, eso originó que en futuros años, muchos otros se sientan influenciados y sé desde su herencia quieran ser parte de un grupo de soldados de elite que protege al reino de un mal que se ha mantenido alejado, pero justamente al momento de que un plebeyo luche contra todo obstáculo y se convierta en un soldado de élite, el terror se apodera del reino siendo "Ballister Boldheart" el señalado; él deberá huir y esconderse de enemigos y de quienes lo aman y en ese momento se encontrará a una extraña aliada, una sidekick llamada "Nimona" que le ayudará no solo a limpiar su nombre, sino a descubrir la verdad sobre el reino.

"Nimona" is an animated film, with elements of fantasy, science fiction, adventure and comedy, being based on a graphic novel of 2015, which bears the same name and was written by ND Stevenson; in this film we will see the story of how a kingdom became powerful from the moment in which its greatest and legendary heroine, "Gloreth", defeated powerful monsters that wanted to invade and destroy her home, that originated that in future years, many others will be influenced by her, many others feel influenced and I know from their heritage want to be part of a group of elite soldiers that protects the kingdom from an evil that has been kept away, but just when a commoner fights against all obstacles and becomes an elite soldier, the terror takes over the kingdom being "Ballister Boldheart" the one pointed out; He must flee and hide from enemies and those who love him and at that moment he will meet a strange ally, a sidekick named "Nimona" who will help him not only to clear his name, but also to discover the truth about the kingdom.

Como dije en el comienzo de la reseña, este film ha transitado un camino difícil para ser estrenada tanto en salas de cine como en un servicio de streaming; superó ser rechazada por Disney a por fin conseguir un lugar en donde poder terminar una producción que comenzó desde el 2015 y que experimentó cambios de productoras, estudio de animación, distribuidoras y de dirección; justamente ese rol lo obtuvo la pareja de directores Nick Bruno y Troy Quane, siendo este film su segunda vez dirigiendo un largometraje; su trabajo es excelente en dando continuidad a la historia de este reino el cual desde un lamentable suceso se originan una aventura que al final podrá revelar una dura verdad, las escenas son muy dinámicas y divertidas, la acción y la aventura son fáciles de asimilar porque son muy entretenidas y no solo las escenas de acción, también los diálogos los cuales se observa tanto la naturalidad sin importar que tan cómicos o dramáticos pueden ser; es un film bastante entretenido con buena edición.

La historia de este film, el guion de "Nimona" fue creado por Robert L. Baird y Lloyd Taylor; como también dije en anterioridad, este film es basado en una novela gráfica de ND Stevenson y primeramente debo decir que no es una copia textual, existe diferentes cambios del material original, nada radical, solo ciertas cosas que seguramente funcionará mejor en una producción filmica; para referirme mejor al guion, creo que es excelente, su historia es fascinante, muy bien escrita, con un muy buen relato sobre el prejuicio, el mal uso del poder, la desinformación, la imposición de una idea, de lo que genera el rechazo y por supuesto la soledad, pero también habla sobre la compasión, la necesidad de conectar con otras personas, de ser aceptado, de alcanzar sueños, de ser feliz; está historia abarca muchos temas, pero todo está muy bien relatado; es en mi opinión una sorpresa que me he llevado con esta historia.

As I said at the beginning of the review, this film has traveled a difficult road to be released both in theaters and in a streaming service; it overcame being rejected by Disney to finally get a place where to finish a production that began since 2015 and experienced changes of production companies, animation studio, distributors and direction; just that role was obtained by the pair of directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, this film being his second time directing a feature film; their work is excellent in giving continuity to the story of this kingdom which from an unfortunate event originate an adventure that in the end may reveal a hard truth, the scenes are very dynamic and fun, the action and adventure are easy to assimilate because they are very entertaining and not only the action scenes, also the dialogues which are observed both naturalness no matter how funny or dramatic they can be; it is a very entertaining film with good editing.

The story of this film, the screenplay of "Nimona" was created by Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor; as I also said before, this film is based on a graphic novel by ND Stevenson and first of all I must say that it is not a verbatim copy, there are different changes from the original material, nothing radical, just certain things that will surely work better in a film production; to better refer to the script, I think it is excellent, its story is fascinating, very well written, with a very good story about prejudice, the misuse of power, misinformation, the imposition of an idea, what generates rejection and of course loneliness, but it also talks about compassion, the need to connect with other people, to be accepted, to achieve dreams, to be happy; this story covers many topics, but everything is very well told; it is in my opinion a surprise that I have taken with this story.

Después de ver el film, quería comparar el diseño no solo de los personajes sino del reino en sí y creo que como fue diseñada el personaje de "Nimona", puedo comparar con otros personajes como son "Mebh" del film "Wolfwalkers" (2020) y de la serie animada "She-Ra and The Princesses of Power" (2018-2020); me gustó mucho la actitud de este personaje, una niña que vaga por un lugar donde es conocida como un fenómeno, su rechazo y soledad la hacen unirse a "Ballister Boldheart", otro gran protagonista del film, el cual su diseño es bastante interesante, se viste de negro, cicatriz en el rostro, barba, en otra historia sería considerado como villano por esos clichés, pero justamente creo que todo lo referente al prejuicio es en parte al diseño de este personaje; lo otro que es fácil de notar y que me pareció muy agradable es el diseño del reino el cual mantiene la esencia de la época medieval, pero también muestra elementos futuristas muy influenciados en films cómo Blade Runner, muchas luces de neón, pantallas gigantescas, hologramas; es una excelente mezcla de dos mundos. Anteriormente, hice referencia a lo dinámico del film en muchas de sus escenas y eso es gracias a la animación.

After watching the film, I wanted to compare the design not only of the characters but of the kingdom itself and I think that as the character of "Nimona" was designed, I can compare with other characters such as "Mebh" from the film "Wolfwalkers" (2020) and the animated series "She-Ra and The Princesses of Power" (2018-2020); I really liked the attitude of this character, a girl who wanders around a place where she is known as a freak, her rejection and loneliness make her join "Ballister Boldheart", another great protagonist of the film, which his design is quite interesting, he dresses in black, scar on his face, beard, in another story he would be considered a villain because of those clichés, but I just think that everything about prejudice is partly to the design of this character; The other thing that is easy to notice and that I found very nice is the design of the kingdom which keeps the essence of medieval times, but also shows futuristic elements very influenced by films like Blade Runner, many neon lights, giant screens, holograms; it is an excellent mix of two worlds. Previously, I made reference to the dynamic of the film in many of its scenes and that is thanks to the animation.

Considero que Nimona es uno de los mejores films que he visto en este año, es un film con muchos temas, pero con un mensaje muy importante hacia la sociedad que está dispuesta a escuchar porque no es obligatorio que cada quien deba ver, leer o escuchar algo que no está dispuesto a aceptar, pero el asunto es que después esas mismas personas necesitan que impongan su punto de vista y justamente en este film, el cual no toma un bando, hace reflejo de eso, de la imposición de una idea, de un relato en dónde existe lo considerado como "normal" y lo que este fuera de ese parámetro sea considerado como un monstruo y crea un rechazo el cual puede llevar a alguien a tener un final lamentable, eso es algo que me pareció excelente de esta historia en dónde se demuestra que cualquiera, sin depender de género, raza o precedencia, puede hacer daño a otros y que solamente basta con un poco de entendimiento para demostrar primeramente empatía. Me sorprendió mucho esta película, es excelente, es un ejemplo de lucha y no lo digo por su historia, lo digo por la convicción de quienes trabajaron para que sea posible su estreno y eso también la hace que sea algo especial, si la quieren ver la pueden conseguir en Netflix, recomendada en un 100%.

I consider that Nimona is one of the best films I have seen this year, it is a film with many themes, but with a very important message to the society that is willing to listen because it is not mandatory that everyone must see, read or listen to something that is not willing to accept, but the thing is that later those same people need to impose their point of view and precisely in this film, which does not take a side, it reflects that, of the imposition of an idea, of a story where there is what is considered "normal" and what is outside that parameter is considered a monster and creates a rejection which can lead someone to have a regrettable end, that is something that I found excellent in this story where it shows that anyone, regardless of gender, race or precedence, can harm others and that only a little understanding is enough to show empathy first. I was very surprised by this film, it is excellent, it is an example of struggle and I do not say this because of its story, I say it because of the conviction of those who worked to make its release possible and that also makes it something special, if you want to see it you can get it on Netflix, 100% recommended.
