Robot Dreams - Movie Review [EN - ES]

When in a film genre such as animation, monopolized by Pixar, Disney, DreamWorks and Sony productions, I think it is striking or attractive when certain films appear that seem to break the mold with attractive stories; These productions which I consider as independent, have certain notoriety when those who create them decide to show the world in a series of film festivals, hoping that luck smiles on them and they can have a national and international distribution, but I think there is no greater promotion when one of these films get the great recognition such as being nominated for the big prize of cinema, that promotion is what made me see a great story which I review in this publication.

Cuando en un género fílmico como es el de la animación, acaparado por producciones de Pixar, Disney, DreamWorks y Sony; creo que es llamativo o atractivo cuando aparecen ciertas películas que parece romper el molde con historias atractivas; estas producciones las cuales considero como independientes, tienen cierta notoriedad cuando quienes las crea deciden mostrar al mundo en una serie de festivales de cine, esperando que la suerte les sonría y puedan tener una distribución nacional e internacional, pero creo que no hay mayor promoción cuando uno de estos filmes obtienen el gran reconocimiento como es ser nominados al gran premio del cine, esa promoción es lo que me hizo ver una gran historia a la cual hago reseña en esta publicación.

"Robot Dreams", a Spanish-French production, premiered first at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, to be later released in theaters last December; film winner of the Goya Awards for Best Animated Film and Best Adapted Screenplay and currently nominated for Best Animated Film in the upcoming Academy Awards; this film takes place in the city of Manhattan in the 80's" and where we will see "Dog", a character who spends his time watching TV, playing video games and eating alone; precisely the loneliness makes him long and have what he sees from his window, I mean a friendship, a relationship that breaks the monotony and seeing a TV commercial, he knows he has the opportunity to have what he wants most, a friend, although not a conventional one, as it is a robot, which must teach the good of friendship, but unexpectedly, as is life itself, must also experience the trials of maintaining and strengthening a relationship.

"Robot Dreams", producción hispano-francesa, estrenada primeramente en el 76th Cannes Film Festival, para después ser estrenada en las salas de cine en el pasado mes de diciembre; película ganadora de los Premios Goya como mejor film animado y mejor guion adaptado y actualmente nominada a Mejor Film Animado en los próximos Premios a la Academia; este film se desarrolla en la ciudad de Manhattan de los 80" y en dónde veremos a "Dog", un personaje quien se la pasa viendo TV, jugar videojuegos y comer solo; justamente la soledad le hace añorar y tener lo que ve observa desde su ventana, me refiero a una amistad, una relación que rompa esa monotonía y al ver un comercial de TV, sabe que tiene la oportunidad de tener lo que más quiere, un amigo, aunque uno nada convencional, ya que es un robot, al cual deberá enseñar lo bueno de la amistad, pero inesperadamente, como es la vida en sí, también deberá experimentar las pruebas de mantener y fortalecer una relación.

My knowledge of this film was because of the nomination to the Oscars; while many people made reference to other films that should have been nominated, I thought this was an opportunity to see a film that was not part of a big production company and maybe they presented something different from the other nominees and yes it did, although in my opinion it is not so different or original; what I said before is not at all something negative, first the story is great, but what I want to refer first of all is the decisions taken in the design of the city of Manhattan and of course of the characters; the animation is excellent, the rhythm imposed to the city, the real New York of the 80's, the suburbs, the buildings, the train, the beach, everything I consider perfect, as well as the design of each character, for example "Dog" has of course the necessary reference of being a dog, but at the same time he has that particularity of being different from the others, it can be the color of his fur, his ears, his body, characteristics that you can't define for example what kind of dog he is, something already seen in other animated productions like "Snoopy" and "Scooby Doo"; I thought that was great and very correct for this story.

The story is amazing and I think it is due to the great decision of not using any words for the story of the friendship between "Dog" and "Robot"; everything that happens in this story that is divided into the points of view of its protagonists, uses between gestures, music and dreams what each one experiences in the relationship they have; This gives us moments where loneliness is a main motivator for the beginning and development of the history of both which can lead to dependence and possibly independence, shows us moments of happiness and the search for that happiness, which is an important theme in this film and what I think is excellent as it was handled, this because there is no need to look for a bad or a good in a relationship, at least not in this story.

Mi conocimiento de este film fue por la nominación a los Premios Oscars; mientras muchas personas hicieron referencia a que otros films debieron ser nominados, pensé que está era una oportunidad para ver un film que no era parte de una gran productora y tal vez presentaron algo diferente a las demás nominadas y sí que lo hizo, aunque en mi opinión no es tan diferente u original; lo antes dicho no es para nada algo negativo, primeramente la historia es genial, pero lo que quiero primeramente hacer referencia es a las decisiones tomadas en el diseño de la ciudad de Manhattan y por supuesto de los personajes; la animación es excelente, el ritmo impuesto a la ciudad, lo real que se ve esa Nueva York de los 80', los suburbios, las edificaciones, el tren, la playa, todo lo considero perfecto, así como el diseño de cada personaje, por ejemplo "Dog" tiene por supuesto la referencia necesaria de ser un perro, pero a la vez tiene esa particularidad de ser diferente a los demás, puede ser el color de su pelaje, sus orejas, su cuerpo, características que no puedes definir por ejemplo a qué clase de perro es, algo ya visto en otras producciones animadas como "Snoopy" y "Scooby Doo"; eso me pareció genial y muy correcto para esta historia.

La historia es sorprendente y creo que es debido la gran decisión de no usar ninguna palabra para el relato de la amistad entre "Dog" y "Robot"; todo lo que sucede en esta historia que se divide en los puntos de vista de sus protagonistas, usa entre gestos, música y sueños lo que experimentan cada uno en la relación que tienen; esto nos brinda momentos en dónde la soledad es un motivador principal para el comienzo y desarrollo de la historia de ambos lo cual puede llevar a la dependencia y posiblemente independencia, nos muestra momentos de felicidad y de la búsqueda de esa felicidad, lo cual es importante tema en esta película y lo que me parece excelente tal como fue manejado, esto porque no hay necesidad de buscar un malo o un bueno en una relación, por lo menos no en esta historia.

The loneliness of "Dog" motivates a wonderful story that makes just that character have some courage or bravery to do things outside his comfort zone or rather, expand that comfort zone, I think Dog can make a number of public can identify with their attitudes although at some point feel or be seen as someone who is not ready to have a purely stable relationship, but that does not prevent him from doing his best not to feel alone again; With respect to "Robot", he has a certain similarity with his counterpart, his naivety makes him exploit new experiences, do his best to be at par with his partner and friend even if that means being dependent; his only point in favor is that at first he does not experience loneliness although some time later the longing and dependence makes him hope to recover good times; feelings that possibly do not have full demonstration because in the end he is a robot, but frustration and depression are shown in an excellent way; there is nothing more to say that "Robot" is my favorite character.

La soledad de "Dog" motiva una historia maravillosa que hace que justamente ese personaje tenga cierto coraje o valentía de hacer cosas fuera de su zona de confort o mejor dicho, expandir esa zona de confort, creo que Dog puede hacer que una cantidad de público puede sentirse identificado con sus actitudes aunque en algún momento sienta o se haga ver cómo alguien que no está preparado para tener una relación netamente estable, pero eso no evita que pueda hacer lo posible por no sentirse nuevamente solo; con respecto a "Robot", tiene cierta similitud con su contraparte, su ingenuidad le hace explotar nuevas experiencias, hacer lo posible para estar a la par de su compañero y amigo aunque eso signifique ser dependiente; su único punto a favor es que en un principio no experimenta la soledad aunque tiempo después la añoranza y la dependencia hace crear esperanza de recuperar buenos momentos; sentimientos que posiblemente no tienen demostración plena porque al final es un robot, pero la frustración y la depresión son demostradas de una forma excelente; no hay más que decir que "Robot" es mi personaje favorito.

I didn't expect much from Robot Dreams, directed and written by Pablo Berger, based on a 2007 comic of the same name and written by Sara Varon; this is one of the best movies I've seen this year, its simple narrative, its beautiful animation and the excellent use of music are the great features of this production that surely won't win the award for best animated film, but I think it is a story that everyone can see and enjoy; the way of using its characters to tell a story about the behavior in a relationship, the reasons to look for and maintain a relationship is what I liked, as well as the personal story of each of its characters and the best thing about the film is that it shows us the experience from the point of view of each one and we can understand behaviors and decisions they will take in order to find the happiness they long for. I hope you have the opportunity to see such a good and positive story, one of those that may go unnoticed in the eyes of the world because of famous or little known awards.

No esperaba mucho de Robot Dreams, dirigida y escrita por Pablo Berger, basada en un comic del 2007, que lleva el mismo nombre y fue escrito por Sara Varon; está es una de las mejores películas que he visto en este año, su simpleza en la narrativa, su hermosa animación y el excelente uso de la música es las grandes características que tiene esta producción que seguramente no gane el premio a mejor film animado, pero creo que es una historia que cada quien puede ver y disfrutar; la manera de usar a sus personajes para relatar una historia sobre el comportamiento en una relación, los motivos para buscar y mantener una relación es lo que me ha gustado, así como la historia personal de cada uno de sus personajes y es que lo mejor del film es que nos va mostrando la experiencia desde el punto de vista de cada uno y así podemos entender comportamientos y decisiones que tomarán para poder encontrar la felicidad que tanto anhelan. Espero que tenga la oportunidad de ver tan buena y positiva historia, una de esas que no sé por premios famosos o pocos conocidos, tal vez pase desapercibida a los ojos del mundo.
