Scrooged - Movie Review [ES - EN]

Cada persona en algún momento decide cuál es su película navideña favorita; por mucho tiempo tanto "Mi Pobre Angelito" (Home Alone) como los episodios animados de "Snoopy" y "Ziggy's Gift" serían mis especiales navideños favoritos, pero por un buen tiempo y por lo repetitivo que era su transmisión en canales nacionales y de cable en esta época navideña, decidí que el film de 1988, "Scrooged" sería mi film favorito de navidad, se convirtió por mucho tiempo en una excelente tradición y es por eso que en esta publicación hago reseña de esta gran y divertida película sobre el efecto de la navidad.

Everyone at some point decides what their favorite Christmas movie is; for a long time both "Home Alone" and the animated episodes of "Snoopy" and "Ziggy's Gift" would be my favorite Christmas specials, but for a long time and because of how repetitive they were broadcast on national and cable channels during this Christmas season, I decided that the 1988 film, "Scrooged" would be my favorite Christmas film, it became for a long time an excellent tradition and that is why in this publication I review this great and funny movie about the effect of Christmas.

"Scrooged" film estrenado hace 35 años que está basado en la novela "A Christmas Carol" de Charles Dickens y que en esa versión moderna relata la historia de "Frank Croos" un egoísta, malhumorado y tacaño alto ejecutivo de un canal televisivo quien aborrece la Navidad, sus prácticas hacia empleados y familiares son malas y justamente por eso, en vísperas de la Noche Buena, Frank será visitado por tres fantasmas de la Navidad que le harán ver su pasado, su presente y lo que será su futuro si no llega a cambiar completamente su vida.

"Scrooged" a film released 35 years ago that is based on the novel "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens**_ and that in this modern version tells the story of "Frank Croos" a selfish, grumpy and stingy senior executive of a television channel who hates Christmas, His practices towards employees and relatives are bad and precisely for that reason, on the eve of Christmas Eve, Frank will be visited by three ghosts of Christmas that will make him see his past, his present and what will be his future if he does not completely change his life.

Este film fue dirigido por Richard Donner, mítico director que nos dio "The Omen", "Superman", "The Goonies" y las cuatro películas de la franquicia de "Lethal Weapon"; en esta oportunidad este director realiza una producción en dónde la comedia es el principal género de la historia, pero también se nota influencia del género del terror, romance y breves secuencias de acción, más que nada por lo físico del humor lo cual es lo que considero perfecto del film; este film tiene muchos cambios de escenas que se llevan a cabo en diferentes años y la transición dependiendo del fantasma que visita a Frank es natural, es un trabajo bien realizado porque función con el humor, ya que por momentos, el protagonista debe sentir que lo que sucede proviene de su imaginación.

El guion es excelente, es una versión rápida de "Un Cuento de Navidad"; historia muy enfocada en su protagonista y no tanto en otros personajes de esta historia, aunque de igual manera tiene una relevante presencia, más que nada al final, para ser el perfecto complemento. El humor es sumamente importante, es un género muy bien representado por la actuación de Murray, pero ¿qué tal es este film como una historia de Navidad? Debo decir que es de lo mejor, la influencia de como traumas del pasado puede arruinar la perspectiva de un evento o en este caso una época muy festiva como la Navidad, es importante para esta historia y lo que funciona como base, para lo que debe experimentar el protagonista para así curar y ser testigo de un milagro de Navidad; existe otro elemento más y es el tema sobre la explotación de la Navidad desde el punto de vista comercial, posiblemente se note en crear una producción en vivo en la noche de navidad, pero creo que más que nada se da en la importancia o el verdadero significado sobre los regalos y estoy convencido que el mejor ejemplo es en la escena entre los dos hermanos, otra de mis escenas favoritas del film.

This film was directed by Richard Donner, mythical director who gave us "The Omen", "Superman", "The Goonies" and the four films of the franchise of "Lethal Weapon"; this time this director makes a production where comedy is the main genre of the story, but also shows the influence of the horror genre, romance and brief action sequences, mostly because of the physicality of humor which is what I consider perfect of the film; this film has many changes of scenes that take place in different years and the transition depending on the ghost that visits Frank is natural, it is a job well done because function with humor, since at times, the protagonist must feel that what happens comes from his imagination.

The script is excellent, it is a quick version of "A Christmas Carol"; story very focused on its protagonist and not so much on other characters of this story, although in the same way it has a relevant presence, mostly at the end, to be the perfect complement. Humor is extremely important, it's a genre very well represented by Murray's performance, but how is this film as a Christmas story? I must say it is one of the best, the influence of how past traumas can ruin the perspective of an event or in this case a very festive season like Christmas, is important for this story and what works as a basis, for what the protagonist must experience in order to heal and witness a Christmas miracle; there is one more element and it is the theme about the exploitation of Christmas from a commercial point of view, possibly it is noticeable in creating a live production on Christmas night, but I think more than anything else it is given in the importance or the true meaning about the gifts and I am convinced that the best example is in the scene between the two brothers, another of my favorite scenes of the film.

No hay duda que sin Bill Murray, esa película no hubiera funcionado y puedo decir que si no se cuenta con ese actor y se espera mucho más, tal vez Jim Carrey quien justamente protagoniza esa misma historia casi 20 años después, pero volviendo al protagonista de "Scrooged"; Bill es excelente, tiene la particularidad de mantener la estabilidad de la locura que es de personaje; trataré de explicarme mejor, "Frank Croos" está completamente loco, su manera de percibir el entretenimiento no es normal, busca crear un impacto inmediato sin importar las consecuencias y la necesidad de dejar un legado, nubla su mente y eso lo convierte en alguien detestable; es por eso que cuando es visitado por los fantasmas de las navidades, veremos porque llega a esta etapa de su vida y de como terminará; con esto digo que la actuación de Murray nos hace viajar por todas esas facetas, de odio, rechazo, desconfianza a una en dónde todo es amor, esperanza y la necesidad de sentir felicidad, justamente esa etapa del personaje es la que más me gusta, ese monólogo final es mi favorito, es de lo mejor del film.

There is no doubt that without Bill Murray, that movie would not have worked and I can say that if you don't count on that actor and expect much more, maybe Jim Carrey who justly stars in that same story almost 20 years later, but going back to the protagonist of "Scrooged"; Bill is excellent, he has the particularity to maintain the stability of the madness that is of character; I will try to explain myself better, "Frank Croos" is completely crazy, his way of perceiving entertainment is not normal, he seeks to create an immediate impact regardless of the consequences and the need to leave a legacy, clouds his mind and that makes him someone detestable; That's why when he is visited by the ghosts of Christmas, we will see why he reaches this stage of his life and how it will end; with this I say that Murray's performance makes us travel through all those facets, from hate, rejection, distrust to one where everything is love, hope and the need to feel happiness, just that stage of the character is the one I like the most, that final monologue is my favorite, it is the best of the film.

Scrooged es mi película favorita de Navidad, me gustó volver a verla después, me parece que es genial tanto como comedia así como un film navideño; tiene un excelente protagonista y una historia entre los demás personajes que a pesar de no tener tanto tiempo en escena como "Frank", eso no quiere decir que están mal desarrollados, en realidad tiene un camino que transitan de manera adecuada y cuando llega un momento en específico, tiene un gran impacto en la historia y lo cual genera una de mis escenas favoritas en todas las películas que he visto, es algo simple, pero funciona muy bien para la época en dónde este film está desarrollado. Hay muchas opciones de films de Navidad, pero creo que a finales de los 80' hubo un estilo, en donde se alejó de lo habitual en la manera de hacer películas de navidad y por eso películas como "Die Hard", Home Alone, "Batman Return", "Lethal Weapon" y "Scrooged" tienen ese estilo crudo, divertido y navideño que pocas veces he visto en la actualidad y es por eso que ese grupo de films sean mis favoritos de esta época.

Scrooged is my favorite Christmas movie, I enjoyed watching it again afterwards, I think it's great both as a comedy and as a Christmas film; It has an excellent protagonist and a story between the other characters that despite not having as much time on stage as "Frank", that does not mean that they are poorly developed, actually has a path that they travel properly and when a specific moment comes, it has a great impact on the story and which generates one of my favorite scenes in all the movies I've seen, it is something simple, but works very well for the time where this film is developed. There are many options of Christmas films, but I think that in the late 80's there was a style, where they moved away from the usual way of making Christmas movies and that's why films like "Die Hard", Home Alone, "Batman Return", "Lethal Weapon" and "Scrooged" have that raw, funny and Christmas style that I have rarely seen nowadays and that's why that group of films are my favorites of this time of the year.
