The Iron Claw - Movie Review [EN - ES]

In the world of sports and entertainment, legacy has an importance that at certain times is difficult to understand; this is mostly because of the pressure that comes with being part of a family which has a unique relevance mostly linked to success, but what happens if a family name or a legacy is not synonymous with victory or triumphs but quite the opposite and I think it is Professional Wrestling, the one that we can cite more examples of how successful and tragic a legacy can be.

En los mundos del deporte y del entretenimiento, el legado tiene una importancia que en ciertos momentos es difícil de entender; esto es más que nada por la presión que conlleva ser parte de una familia la cual tiene una relevancia única mayormente ligada al éxito, pero que sucede si un apellido o un legado no es sinónimo de victoria o de triunfos sino de todo lo contrario y justamente, creo que es la Lucha Profesional, la que más ejemplos podemos citar de lo exitoso y trágico que puede ser un legado.

"The Iron Claw", a biographical sports film distributed by "A24", tells the story of the "Von Erichs" family, formed by the father "Jack "Fritz" Von Erich" and his four sons: "Kevin", "David", "Kerry" and "Mike"; all professional wrestlers, all victims of a supposed curse that accompanies their surname, which will be the only and regrettable answer to all the tragedies they will have to suffer.

"The Iron Claw", película biográfica, deportiva, distribuida por "A24"; relata la historia de la familia "Von Erichs" conformada por el padre "Jack "Fritz" Von Erich" y sus cuatro hijos: "Kevin", "David", "Kerry" y "Mike"; todos luchadores profesionales, todos víctimas de una supuesta maldición que acompaña a su apellido, lo cual será la única y lamentable respuesta a todas las tragedias que deberán padecer.

Possibly, this film enters in that list in which its first images are not attractive or hopeful enough to be a quality production, but as has happened on numerous occasions, the seal of "A24", generates confidence that in one way or another, this film is better than expected and yes it is. This is the first work I see of the director and screenwriter, Sean Durkin, who I could read is a faithful follower of professional wrestling and that motivated him to make this film; I must say that his knowledge about this type of entertainment is noticeable and that is because he captures in a good way what refers to the fights, the perspectives of those scenes are excellent, as well as demonstrating everything that happens both in front and behind the camera.

The script written by Durkin is heartbreaking, it is a family drama although it is also a Greek tragedy; it is a story as seen in other films of the sports genre, where physical strength, motivational message, victory and defeat are present, being just that, the hard defeats what creates a wrong motive that pushes to tragedy; in that I think it makes it very different from other films and where the factor of being based on the life of a group of brothers makes it more impacting; the story to tell the life of this family and the supposed curse of which they are victims is what I liked most about the film.

Posiblemente, este film entra en esa lista en que sus primeras imágenes no sean lo suficientemente atrayentes o esperanzadoras en ser una producción de calidad, pero como ha sucedido en numerosas ocasiones, el sello de "A24", genera confianza en que de una manera u otra, este film sea mejor de lo esperado y sí que lo es. Este es el primer trabajo que veo del director y guionista, Sean Durkin, quien pude leer es un fiel seguidor de la lucha profesional y eso le motivó al realizar este film; debo decir que se nota sus conocimientos sobre este tipo de entretenimiento y eso es debido a que capta de una buena manera lo referente a los combates, las perspectivas de esas escenas son excelentes, así como demostrar todo lo que sucede tanto al frente como detrás de cámara.

El guion escrito por Durkin es desgarrador, es un drama familiar aunque también es una tragedia griega; es un relato como se ha visto en otras películas del género deportivo, en donde la fortaleza física, el mensaje motivador, la victoria y la derrota están presentes, siendo justamente eso, las duras derrotas lo que crea un motivo erróneo que empuja a la tragedia; en eso creo que lo hace muy diferente a las demás películas y en donde el factor de ser basada en la vida de un grupo de hermanos lo hace más impactante; el relato para contar la vida de esta familia y la supuesta maldición de la cual son víctimas es lo que más me ha gustado del film.

There is no doubt that a good script must be accompanied by a good performance and in this film there is that important factor; each of the protagonists has his moment to show relevance, but in my opinion there are two actors with a lot of weight in the story; the first one is Holt McCallany as "Fritz Von Erich"; a man who lives under the shadow of the frustrated dream of being a champion; the performance of Holt I can consider as the perfect villain, but the reality is of someone selfish blinded by a success that he will never have, his presence on stage makes his character become a dark cloud that overshadows the positive of his children; The second actor of great importance in this film is Zac Efron as "Kevin Von Erich", the older brother, the protector, dependent on his siblings; all this story is told from Kevin's point of view and I can only say that Efron does a great job, it is not only the physical aspect, but it is the development of his character, the need to be a counterpart to the image of his father makes him part of the most difficult fight he will face and this actor, object of ridicule for his appearance in this film, reverses that situation with possibly the best performance of his career.

No hay duda que el buen guion debe ser acompañado por una buena interpretación y en esta película existe ese importante factor; cada uno de los protagonistas tiene su momento de mostrar relevancia, pero en mi opinión existen dos actores con mucho peso en la historia; el primero es Holt McCallany como "Fritz Von Erich"; un hombre que vive bajo la sombra del sueño frustrado de ser campeón; la actuación de Holt la puedo considerar como la de un perfecto villano, pero la realidad es de alguien egoísta cegado por un éxito que nunca tendrá, su presencia en escena hace que su personaje se convierta en una nube oscura que opaca lo positivo de sus hijos; en eso demuestra lo relevante de su actuación; el segundo actor de mucha importancia en este film es Zac Efron como "Kevin Von Erich", el hermano mayor, el protector, dependiente de sus hermanos; toda esta historia está relatada desde el punto de vista de Kevin y solo puedo decir que Efron hace un gran trabajo, no es solamente el aspecto físico, sino que es el desarrollo de su personaje, la necesidad de ser una contraparte a la imagen de su padre le hace ser parte del combate más difícil que deberá enfrentar y este actor, objeto de burlas por su aspecto en este film, revierte esa situación con posiblemente la mejor actuación de su carrera.

As with the story of the "Von Erich" family in The Iron Claw; I'm sure many other families within the Pro Wrestling industry can relate to this tragic story and watching this film it was impossible not to think of other stars in the sport or entertainment who have suffered irreparable losses, destroyed careers, siblings, sons and daughters who must live in the shadow of a legacy, meet the expectations of bosses and fans in order to achieve even brief success; that in part makes this story show crudeness with respect to how the show must always go on, but I think the family element transcends and is what makes the most impact in the end; which makes it better because I think that Sean Durkin, makes a tribute with much respect, to the unfortunate tragedy that this family lived; in my opinion an excellent biographical film that could have had more recognition than it got.

Así como sucede con el relato de la familia "Von Erich" en The Iron Claw; estoy seguro de que muchas otras familias más dentro de la industria de la Lucha Profesional pueden sentirse identificadas con esta historia trágica y es que viendo este film se me hizo imposible no pensar en otras estrellas de este deporte o entretenimiento que han padecido perdidas irreparables, carreras destruidas, hermanos, hijos e hijas que deben vivir bajo la sombra de un legado, llenar las expectativas de los jefes y fans para poder alcanzar así sea brevemente el éxito; eso en parte hace que esta historia muestre crudeza con respecto a cómo el show siempre debe continuar, pero creo que el elemento familiar trasciende y es lo que al final causa más impacto; lo que la hace mejor porque pienso que Sean Durkin, hace un homenaje con mucho respeto, a la lamentable tragedia que vivió esta familia; en mi opinión un excelente film biográfico que pudo tener más reconocimiento del que obtuvo.
