The Penguin: "Cent'Anni" - Episode Review [ES - EN]

El pasado domingo se estrenó el cuarto episodio de la sorprendente miniserie basada en uno de los villanos de Batman, me refiero a El Pingüino; este episodio cierra la encrucijada de esta historia en la cual con los otros tres episodios anteriores formaron una fuerte base para lo que será los últimos cuatro restantes y lo que pondrán fin a esta producción de HBO y MAX; personalmente no tenía pensado hacer más reseñas sobre este spin-off hasta el momento de su conclusión, pero este cuarto episodio me ha sorprendido al ser una trágica historia de una princesa que a causa de una traición cayó un mundo de terror que le arrebató todo.

Last Sunday was released the fourth episode of the amazing miniseries based on one of Batman's villains, I mean The Penguin; this episode closes the crossroads of this story in which with the other three previous episodes formed a strong basis for what will be the last four remaining and what will end this production of HBO and MAX; I personally did not plan to do more reviews on this spin-off until the time of its conclusion, but this fourth episode has surprised me by being a tragic story of a princess that because of a betrayal fell a world of terror that took everything away from her.

"Cent'Anni"… Este brindis tiene como significado "100 Años de Buenos Deseos" y es lo da nombre a este gran cuarto episodio que se enfoca en el personaje de "Sofia Falcone"; en esta oportunidad desde el momento en que es traicionada por "Oz", retomamos a lo sucedido hace 10 años cuando Sofia fue acusada de ser la asesina conocida como "the Hangman", lo cual la llevo al "Arkham Asylum" al ser diagnosticada con una deficiencia mental hasta el momento de realizar un juicio que nunca se llevó a cabo; 10 años padeció Sofia en ese nefasto lugar lo cual la convirtió en una mujer que no dejará que nadie más le haga daño.

"Cent'Anni".... This toast means "100 Years of Good Wishes" and it is what gives the name to this great fourth episode that focuses on the character of "Sofia Falcone"; in this opportunity from the moment she is betrayed by "Oz", we go back to what happened 10 years ago when Sofia was accused of being the murderer known as "the Hangman", which took her to the "Arkham Asylum" when she was diagnosed with a mental deficiency until the time of a trial that was never carried out; 10 years Sofia suffered in that nefarious place which turned her into a woman who will not let anyone else hurt her.

Así como sucedió en el tercer episodio enfocado en el pasado de "Victor", me gustó que en esta oportunidad debemos tener la obligada historia de este importante personaje para esta historia, lo cual no quiere decir que se deje a un lado el protagonismo de "Oz" Cobb, sino que veamos el poder y la influencia de ese personaje en la trama de otros como en este caso con Sofia. El episodio que dictaminó el fin de la primera parte de este episodio en mi opinión está creado desde la narrativa de una fábula, veremos como una princesa se le arrebata toda su vida de lujos y protección lo cual la llevo a convertirse en algo que nunca debió ser, creando un ser lleno de resentimiento contra quienes le hicieron daño, pero que todavía faltaba un motivo más para hacerlos pagar y una nueva traición fue suficiente para recordar una vida no tan pasada y llenarse de fuerza para hacer justicia.

Los recuerdos de la estadía en el Asilo de Arkham fue lo primero que me gustó del episodio; el terror y miedo que expresó Cristin Milioti en su actuación fue excelente y demuestra los elementos de terror en este cuarto episodio, lo indefensa, vulnerable de Sofia, son características necesarias para convertirla en una predilecta víctima, la cual va evolucionando en algo más, en alguien diferente y eso se nota en su mirada, su voz, su actitud, pero de igual manera sigue siendo una víctima y eso la aleja de su final transformación y en eso está la importancia de Oz que con su poca presencia en este episodio, se convierte en el ingrediente más importante para la decisión que debe tomar Sofia.

Just as it happened in the third episode focused on the past of "Victor", I liked that this time we must have the obligatory history of this important character for this story, which does not mean that the protagonism of "Oz" Cobb is left aside, but we see the power and influence of that character in the plot of others as in this case with Sofia. The episode that dictated the end of the first part of this episode in my opinion is created from the narrative of a fable, we will see how a princess is snatched all her life of luxury and protection which led her to become something she should never have been, creating a being full of resentment against those who hurt her, but that still lacked one more reason to make them pay and a new betrayal was enough to remember a life not so past and be filled with strength to do justice.

The flashbacks to the stay at Arkham Asylum was the first thing I liked about the episode; the terror and fear expressed by Cristin Milioti in her performance was excellent and demonstrates the elements of terror in this fourth episode, how helpless, vulnerable Sofia is, are necessary characteristics to turn her into a favorite victim, which is evolving into something else, in someone different and it shows in her look, her voice, her attitude, but still remains a victim and that keeps her away from her final transformation and that is the importance of Oz that with his little presence in this episode, becomes the most important ingredient for the decision that Sofia must take.

Si esta historia de más de 60 minutos no estuviera dentro de una producción basada en un comic, creo que hubiera funcionado de igual manera por como fue relatada; posiblemente con anexos como por ejemplo hacer una historia independiente desde un inicio, definiendo o mostrando brevemente el pasado del personaje principal, en este caso Sofia, para después dar paso a los insultos, desprecios y traiciones lo cual afecta nuevamente a una mujer que estuvo recluida en un sanatorio y que está reacia a ser alejada del lugar que a ella le pertenece y por eso debe hacer lo necesario para evitarlo; en mi opinión eso convierte a este personaje en una perfecta Final Girl, alguien que consigue la fuerza en traumas pasados para obtener el valor y enfrentar a los verdaderos monstruos, eso me convence de que este episodio en particular ha funcionado mejor que los anteriores por tener esa necesidad de encontrar a un héroe o a alguien a quien apoyar, pero quiero recordarles que, a pesar de mi admiración por la historia relatada de este personaje en ese episodio, en esta miniserie no hay héroes, eso no existe, ni existirá, todos son víctimas y villanos, todos deben pasar por esas etapas y lo cual para mí es fascinante y que a su vez me crea expectativas para los cuatro episodios finales.

If this story of more than 60 minutes was not within a production based on a comic book, I think it would have worked just as well for how it was told; possibly with annexes such as making an independent story from the beginning, defining or briefly showing the past of the main character, in this case Sofia, and then give way to insults, scorn and betrayals which again affects a woman who was confined in a sanatorium and is reluctant to be removed from the place that belongs to her and therefore must do what is necessary to avoid it; in my opinion that makes this character a perfect Final Girl, someone who draws strength from past traumas to get the courage to face the real monsters, that convinces me that this particular episode has worked better than the previous ones for having that need to find a hero or someone to support, but I want to remind you that, despite my admiration for the story told of this character in that episode, in this miniseries there are no heroes, that does not exist, nor will exist, they are all victims and villains, everyone must go through those stages and that for me is fascinating and that in turn creates expectations for the final four episodes.
