The Penguin: "There are different kinds of power" - Episode Review [ES - EN]

Posiblemente de todos los villanos que Batman debe enfrentar, es el Pingüino el que menos atracción me ha creado y es debido a la version live-action del personaje en la serie televisiva de los 60'; una versión contrarrestada por lo que hizo Tim Burton en "Batman Return", creando a un grotesco personaje que lo convirtió en un enemigo peligroso por sus motivos llenos de odio, pero de igual manera creía que no era tan digno y tal vez se necesitaba una versión más terrenal como pude observar en algunos films animados en dónde lo convirtieron en un jefe criminal, líder de la mafia, despiadado y cruel, siendo esa la versión a la que Matt Reeves decidió usar en su primer film del Caballero de la Noche y que ahora puede profundizar dándole una merecida y necesaria relevancia en la miniserie estrenada en HBO y MAX.

Possibly of all the villains that Batman has to face, the Penguin is the one that has created the least attraction for me and it is due to the live-action version of the character in the 60's TV series; a version counteracted by what Tim Burton did in "Batman Return", creating a grotesque character that turned him into a dangerous enemy because of his hate-filled motives, but I also thought he was not so worthy and maybe a more earthly version was needed as I could see in some animated films where they turned him into a criminal boss, that was the version that Matt Reeves decided to use in his first film of the Dark Knight and now he can deepen it by giving him a deserved and necessary relevance in the miniseries released on HBO and MAX.

El pasado jueves fue el estreno del primer episodio de esta serie el cual recibió el nombre de "After Hours", un título perfecto para dar comienzo a esta producción que funciona como una directa secuela de The Batman, ya que los acontecimientos que ocurren al final del film desencadenan lo que ocurre en el episodio y marcarán la pauta a los restantes. Siempre he pensado que aparte de "Bruce Wayne/Batman" y demás galería de villanos, la ciudad en dónde se desarrolla la historia es muy importante, es un protagonista más y así como sucede en el film dirigido por Revees, también sucede en esta serie, ya que es el motivo principal de cada personaje, en dónde algunos quieren salvarla y otros solo quieren controlar, hundir o destruir.

No puedo decir que la premisa de la serie es original porque en otra producción basada en Batman, ya se relató algo parecido en dónde la lucha por la ciudad envolvió a villanos y futuros protectores, pero la diferencia entre la serie "Gotham" y esta nueva, es que el relato es completamente desde el punto de vista de un villano y eso es lo fascinante porque profundiza en esta versión del personaje, el cual tiene un apellido que suena importante, pero que justamente esa importancia no existe en quienes son más poderosos que él y es eso lo que motiva aún más a un oportunista, mentiroso y vil personaje.

Last Thursday was the premiere of the first episode of this series which received the name of "After Hours", a perfect title to start this production that works as a direct sequel to The Batman, since the events that occur at the end of the film trigger what happens in the episode and will set the tone for the remaining episodes. I have always thought that apart from "Bruce Wayne/Batman" and other villains gallery, the city where the story takes place is very important, it is another protagonist and as it happens in the film directed by Revees, it also happens in this series, as it is the main motive of each character, where some want to save it and others just want to control, sink or destroy.

I can not say that the premise of the series is original because in another production based on Batman, already told something similar where the fight for the city involved villains and future protectors, but the difference between the series "Gotham" and this new one, is that the story is completely from the point of view of a villain and that is what is fascinating because it delves into this version of the character, which has a surname that sounds important, but precisely that importance does not exist in those who are more powerful than him and that is what motivates even more an opportunistic, lying and vile character.

Desde su aparición en The Batman, el actor Colin Farrell creó un gran impacto; el aspecto de "Oswald "Oz" Cobb", su voz, la presencia perfecta del personaje es perfecta; desde el primer momento en escena se nota que dependiendo con quién esté podemos ver una actitud diferente de lo que realmente es y es que en el film, es respetuoso, posiblemente alguien sumiso, pero la realidad es que es alguien a quien se le subestima y mucho lo cual parece ser el gran error que cometen varios enemigos. La actuación de Farrell es excelente, te hace olvidar que él interpreta al personaje y crees plenamente que ese es su aspecto, ese debe ser el gran logro del actor y lo que considero es uno de sus mejores trabajos; por momentos se puede notar algo infantil o poco inteligente, pero la realidad es todo lo contrario, ya que es meticuloso y un peligroso oportunista. Otro personaje y por supuesto actuación que me ha gustado, es la de Cristin Milioti quien interpreta a "Sofia Falcone", princesa del mundo criminal que por ciertas circunstancias buscará imponer su apellido para retomar el control de la ciudad, el problema estará en su disfunción mental lo cual podrá o no dar credibilidad; en esto creo que Milioti ofrece entre locura, rabia y belleza, a una gran contrincante para "Oz" y los demás que quieran controlar a la ciudad.

Since his appearance in The Batman, the actor Colin Farrell created a great impact; the appearance of "Oswald "Oz" Cobb", his voice, the perfect presence of the character is perfect; from the first moment in scene it is noticed that depending on who he is with we can see a different attitude of what he really is and is that in the film, he is respectful, possibly someone submissive, but the reality is that he is someone who is underestimated and much which seems to be the big mistake that several enemies make. The performance of Farrell is excellent, he makes you forget that he is playing the character and you fully believe that this is his aspect, that must be the great achievement of the actor and what I consider is one of his best works; at times you can notice something childish or unintelligent, but the reality is quite the opposite, as he is meticulous and a dangerous opportunist. Another character and of course performance that I liked, is that of Cristin Milioti who plays "Sofia Falcone", princess of the criminal world that for certain circumstances will seek to impose her name to regain control of the city, the problem will be in her mental dysfunction which may or may not give credibility; in this I think that Milioti offers between madness, rage and beauty, a great opponent for "Oz" and others who want to control the city.

El episodio piloto es un gran homenaje a anteriores producciones televisivas o del cine que se basen en el mundo criminal, esto es genial porque se puede transitar en el género dramático, en el de acción, ser un thriller con mucha tensión, lo cual creo que será la tónica de la temporada, una lucha de intelectos entre personas subestimadas por su físico o condición mental, lo cual será su primera arma contra quiénes los subestiman; eso es magnífico, es una lucha no entre el bien y el mal porque esta historia no existen los héroes, ni mucho menos la justicia, está es una lucha por el poder, una guerra por Ciudad Gótica.

The pilot episode is a great tribute to previous television or film productions based on the criminal world, this is great because it can move in the dramatic genre, in the action, be a thriller with a lot of tension, which I think will be the tone of the season, a struggle of intellects between people underestimated by their physical or mental condition, which will be their first weapon against those who underestimate them; that is magnificent, it is a fight not between good and evil because this story there are no heroes, much less justice, this is a struggle for power, a war for Gotham City.
