To Catch a Killer - Movie Review [ES - EN]

Cada cierto tiempo puedo leer en las redes sociales opiniones positivas sobre películas que por decisión propia no vería, pero en momentos en dónde no encuentro algún film que ver, retomo esa lista a la cual llamo "Cuando tenga oportunidad la veré" y tomo la que mejor captó la atención del público; en esta oportunidad hago reseña de un thriller criminal que creó críticas mixtas en su corta estadía en las salas de cine, pero con su estreno en Amazon Prime Video, parece que encontró un lugar donde se ha apreciado mucho más.

Every once in a while I can read on social media positive opinions about movies that by my own decision I would not see, but in moments where I can't find any movie to watch, I go back to that list that I call "I'll watch it when I have the chance" and I take the one that best caught the attention of the public; this time I review a criminal thriller that created mixed reviews in its short stay in movie theaters, but with its premiere on Amazon Prime Video, it seems to have found a place where it has been appreciated much more.

"To Catch a Killer", es un thriller criminal que narra como una agente de la policía, "Eleanor Falco" debe accionar cuando en la celebración del Año Nuevo, una serie de asesinatos ocurren; esta gran cantidad de muertos crea una situación de desespero en la cúpula gubernamental de la ciudad Baltimore que de manera constante presiona a tanto agentes del FBI como los policiales para resolver el crimen y es que el asesino es alguien que no dejó rastros y que es muy difícil de atrapar, eso hace que Eleonor, demostrando su inteligencia y entendimiento hacia el criminal, sea parte del equipo de investigación, liderado por el agente especial "Lammark" del FBI para cazar y poner fin al terror causado en esa ciudad.

"To Catch a Killer" is a crime thriller that tells how a police officer, "Eleanor Falco" must act when a series of murders occur on New Year's Eve; this large number of dead creates a situation of desperation in the government of the city of Baltimore that constantly pressures both FBI agents and police to solve the crime and that the killer is someone who left no trace and is very difficult to catch, that makes Eleanor, demonstrating her intelligence and understanding towards the criminal, be part of the investigation team, led by FBI Special Agent "Lammark" to hunt down and put an end to the terror caused in that city.

El film es dirigido por Damián Szifron, director argentino que anteriormente dirigió shows de TV argentinos y es por eso que esta película es la primera que dirige de habla inglesa. El trabajo de Szifron es correcto; tiene un buen sentido en las escenas llenas de tensión y suspenso, preferiblemente en lo que son los dos primeros actos del film; el uso de la cámara en toda la secuencia de las primeras escenas del film son muy buenas porque crean el impacto para que el público se adentre en la historia de una manera rápida y de una manera directa presenta a todos los protagonistas; lo que considero como negativo en el trabajo de este director, es de realizar tomas las cuales se pueden consideran artísticas y en mi opinión se ve muy forzado, no aportan absolutamente nada.

El guion co-escrito por Szifron y Jonathan Wakeham, presenta una excelente idea al unir la ficción con hechos reales, sé que no es original, pero funciona muy bien porque de esa manera le da profundidad a diferentes temas aunque el principal es la depresión y la inestabilidad mental; ambos escritores demuestran el peligro que existe cuando personas sufre de los padecimientos antes citados, esto es lo que me gustó de la historia la cual también presenta muchos temas como es la crítica hacia la burocracia, la imposición del poder, la necesidad de demostrar una normalidad cuando en cualquier momento puede hacer presencia el caos; está es una historia en dónde ocurre muchas cosas y las cual en su mayoría de tiempo está bien desarrollado, lamentablemente en lo que debería ser el clímax de la historia se entorpece porque prefirieron sobrexplicar algo que ya estaba más que desarrollado en la historia.

The film is directed by Damián Szifron, an Argentine director who previously directed Argentine TV shows and that is why this film is the first English-language film he has directed. The work of Szifron is correct; he has a good sense in the scenes full of tension and suspense, preferably in what are the first two acts of the film; the use of the camera in the whole sequence of the first scenes of the film are very good because they create the impact so that the audience gets into the story in a fast way and in a direct way presents all the main characters; what I consider as negative in the work of this director, is to make shots which can be considered artistic and in my opinion looks very forced, do not contribute absolutely nothing.

The script co-written by Szifron and Jonathan Wakeham, presents an excellent idea by joining fiction with real facts, I know it is not original, but it works very well because in that way it gives depth to different themes although the main one is depression and mental instability; both writers show the danger that exists when people suffer from the aforementioned conditions, this is what I liked about the story which also presents many issues such as criticism towards bureaucracy, the imposition of power, the need to demonstrate normality when at any moment chaos can be present; this is a story where many things happen and which in most of the time is well developed, unfortunately in what should be the climax of the story is hindered because they preferred to overexplain something that was already more than developed in the story.

La actuación de Shailene Woodley, como la policía "Eleanor Falco" es de lo destacable en el film; he visto su trabajo en otras producciones dramáticas y en esta oportunidad hace un buen trabajo Interpretando a una mujer perturbada por un pasado problemático; su sufrimiento silencioso la hará ser parte importante en la resolución de este importante caso porque en los breves momentos de confianza, no teme demostrar sus sentimientos, sus pensamientos que posiblemente le hagan conectar con el asesino. Otra buena actuación es por parte de Ben Mendelsohn, el Interpreta al agente especial "Lammark" y aunque es el típico líder de un grupo de investigación, en mi opinión cumple con ese rol, es mentor para bien y para mal, un personaje fuerte, enfocado en hacer su trabajo, aunque también es víctima de las circunstancias impuestas por quién tiene la necesidad de enseñar poder; ambos actores tienen buena química y eso ayuda mucho al relato del film.

The performance of Shailene Woodley, as the policewoman "Eleanor Falco" is one of the highlights of the film; I have seen her work in other dramatic productions and this time she does a good job playing a woman troubled by a troubled past; her silent suffering will make her an important part in the resolution of this important case because in the brief moments of trust, she is not afraid to show her feelings, her thoughts that may possibly make her connect with the murderer. Another good performance is by Ben Mendelsohn, he plays the special agent "Lammark" and although he is the typical leader of an investigation group, in my opinion he fulfills that role, he is a mentor for better and for worse, a strong character, focused on doing his job, although he is also a victim of the circumstances imposed by who has the need to show power; both actors have good chemistry and that helps a lot to the story of the film.

Entiendo el porqué de la aceptación de este film desde su estreno en Amazon Prime Video, es un film entretenido y bien dirigido y escrito en sus dos primeros actos, pero en mi opinión, es el final en dónde no se desarrolla de la mejor manera y cae, es por eso que considero que "To Catch a Killer" es un film regular; porque se extiende mucho en explicar los sentimientos y motivos del asesino esperaba que la historia terminara de una mejor manera; estoy convencido de que los guionistas no querían que su historia presentará tantos clichés del género, pero al final cumplen con todos aunque el gran problema es que no consiguieron un verdadero clímax que cerrara esta historia, es hasta un poco decepcionante y eso es debido a qué no existe conexión entre los actores que comparten las escenas finales, esa característica que según el guion debería existir conexión entre ambos, eso no se aprecia y se nota forzado; lamentablemente este es otro ejemplo en dónde una gran idea, no se cierra bien y se pierde en realizar una producción que expone una gran crítica a como se maneja este tipo de situaciones que observamos en este film.

I understand why the acceptance of this film since its premiere on Amazon Prime Video, it is an entertaining film and well directed and written in its first two acts, but in my opinion, it is the end where it does not develop in the best way and falls, that is why I consider "To Catch a Killer" is a regular film; because it extends a lot in explaining the feelings and motives of the murderer I expected the story to end in a better way; I am convinced that the screenwriters did not want their story to present so many clichés of the genre, but in the end they comply with all of them, although the big problem is that they did not get a real climax to close this story, it is even a little disappointing and that is because there is no connection between the actors who share the final scenes, that characteristic that according to the script there should be connection between them, that is not appreciated and it feels forced; Unfortunately this is another example where a great idea is not well closed and is lost in a production that exposes a great criticism of how this type of situations that we see in this film are handled.
