This time I'm going to talk to you about one of the few films of this last decade that have caught my attention, even more for mixing several of my favorite genres in a story of no more than 1 hour and a half long. A film that presents us with one of the most dangerous, dark, terrifying and desolate post-apocalyptic worlds in the history of modern cinema. Directed by and starring John Krasinski himself, this film is co-produced by the great Michael Bay, among others. Meet one of the best science fiction, suspense and horror movies that exist today and that I recommend watching.

En esta ocasión les voy a hablar acerca de una de las pocas películas de esta última década que me han llamado la atención, más aún por mezclar varios de mis géneros favoritos en una historia de no más de 1 hora y media de duración. Una cinta que nos presenta uno de los mundos post-apocalípticos más peligrosos, oscuros, terroríficos y desolados que existen en la historia del cine moderno. Plot

The film begins by showing us a small town completely desolate and silent. In what appears to be a store there are several young people, a teenage girl, a boy and a boy who communicate with sign language while their mother is looking for pills and other supplies. The youngest tries to grab a toy airplane from a high part of a shelf which then falls and quickly his older sister catches it thus preventing it from making a noise when it hits the ground. Just at that moment the father of this discreet daughter, who by the way are all barefoot, appears. He tells the child by signs that he can't take the plane with him and removes the batteries and leaves it on a shelf in full view of the others before leaving. However, on the way back, just past an abandoned bridge in the woods the family hears (except for the young girl who is deaf) the toy airplane in the child's hand and, desperately running, the father tries to reach it... but a huge creature suddenly appears and carries the child away.

La película inicia mostrándonos un pequeño pueblo completamente desolado y en silencio. En lo que parece ser un negocio se encuentran varios jóvenes, una adolescente, un chico y un niño que se comunican con lenguaje de señas mientras su madre está en busca de pastillas y otras provisiones. El más pequeño intenta agarrar un avión de juguete de una parte alta de un estante que luego se cae y rápidamente su hermana mayor la atrapa evitando así que haga ruido al tocar el suelo. Justo en ese momento aparece el padre de esta discreta hija, que por cierto van todos descalzos. Este le dice por señas al niño que no puede llevarse el avión y le retira las pilas y lo deja en un estante a la vista de los demás antes de irse. Sin embargo, en el camino de regreso, justo pasando un puente abandonado en el bosque la familia escucha (a excepción de la joven que es sorda) el avión de juguete que tiene el niño a la mano y, corriendo desesperado el padre, intenta alcanzarlo… pero una enorme criatura aparece de repente y se lleva al niño.

Before I give you my opinion about this great film, I want to make it clear that, although I knew about it shortly after it was released, I never had the opportunity to see it in its entirety, only in parts and on television. However, that was enough to recognize how unique this film is in capturing the viewer's attention and generating a variety of emotions and tension that very few films manage to do today. At a time when cinema was in its decline in terms of quality and originality, an actor and director chose to develop a story that has never been told before, at least not on the big screen and in such a heartbreaking way. A film that puts us at the feet of a person unable to hear or make a sound, a world plunged into silence and darkness, a family plunged into pain and fear by dangerous and extremely terrifying creatures. All this and more is what this work manages to recreate in only an hour and a half.

Antes de darles mi opinión acerca de esta grandiosa película, quiero dejarles claro que, si bien la conocía desde poco después de haberse estrenado, nunca tuve la oportunidad de verla completa, solo en partes y por televisión. Sin embargo, eso fue suficiente como para reconocer lo única que es esta cinta para capturar la atención de su espectador y generar una variedad de emociones y una tensión que muy pocas películas logran hacer al día de hoy. En una época en la que el cine se encontraba en su declive a nivel de calidad y originalidad, un actor y director optó por desarrollar una historia que nunca antes se ha contado, al menos no en la pantalla grande y de esta forma tan desgarradora. Una película que nos pone en los pies de una persona incapaz de escuchar o hacer ruido, un mundo sumido en el silencio y en la oscuridad, una familia sumida en dolor y en temor por criaturas peligrosas y sumamente aterradoras. Todo esto y más es lo que esta obra logra recrear con solo una hora y media de duración.

If you are a person who is uneasy about silence, this film will give you reason to completely fear it. Very few films have managed to perfectly imbibe that sense of tension, unease, fear and disturbance with few sounds and a silence that seems desolate. Now, add to this the fact that you are with your family, your older sister who is deaf, your father who seeks to protect others while trying to communicate with any survivors and a mother who is pregnant and about to give birth. All of this is what we see in this film.

Knowing now the situation and what we will see in this movie, it is normal to feel some empathy or uneasiness with this family, which are the protagonists of this story that, as you already read, began in a very heartbreaking way. Now, it is normal that the first thing anyone would ask is: how can a family live in a world where you can not make the slightest noise while overcoming a painful loss together and are about to have a baby? Well, that is what we are going to find out, as we see how they stick together and overcome every adversity. However, as we get to know each character, each strength and weakness, it's only natural that we feel completely troubled every time they face these horrible and dangerous creatures from another world. The way they internalize each other's feelings after loss and having been in uncertainty and fear for over a year now as everything becomes more and more tense is something I love about this film.

Hay que empezar hablando de la historia que nos cuenta esta película y para esto quiero destacar lo que les describí arriba. Esa trama que acaban de leer son solo los primeros 10 minutos de la película. 10 minutos que sirven para ser la introducción y a la vez el resumen perfecto de lo que veremos a continuación en el resto de cinta. 10 minutos que son completamente desgarradores luego de verlos y que nos muestra de forma perfecta este peligroso y desolado mundo post-apocalíptico que a su vez está sumido en el silencio. Si eres una persona que te inquieta el silencio, esta película te dará razones para temerle por completo. Muy pocas películas han logrado impregnar de manera perfecta esa sensación de tensión, inquietud, miedo y perturbación con pocos sonidos y un silencio que parece desolador. Ahora, sumemos a esto el hecho de que estés con tu familia, tu hermana mayor que es sorda, tu padre que busca proteger a los demás mientras intenta comunicarse con algún sobreviviente y una madre que se encuentra embarazada y que está a poco de parir. Todo esto es lo que vemos en esta película.

Sabiendo ahora la situación y lo que veremos en esta película, es normal sentir algo de empatía o inquietud con esta familia, la cual son los protagonistas de esta historia que, como ya leyeron, empezó de una forma muy desgarradora. Ahora, es normal que lo primero que cualquiera se pregunte sea: ¿cómo puede vivir una familia en un mundo donde no se puede hacer el más mínimo ruido mientras superan una dolorosa pérdida juntos y están a punto de tener un bebé? Pues es lo que vamos a descubrir, a la vez que vemos cómo se mantienen unidos y superan cada adversidad. Sin embargo, al conocer a cada personaje, cada fortaleza y debilidad, es normal que nos sintamos completamente preocupados cada vez que se enfrentan a estas horribles y peligrosas criaturas de otro mundo. La forma en la que interiorizan los sentimientos de cada uno luego de la pérdida y de llevar ya más de un año en incertidumbre y temor mientras todo se vuelve más y más tenso es algo que me encanta de esta película.

They practically put us in her role with moments of complete silence while we don't know when she is making noise and when she is not. Not far from putting a character like this in a world where it is mandatory not to make any noise in order to survive, what is more ironic is the fact that her hearing problem is the origin of the way she fights with these creatures. In order not to go into details or give any unnecessary spoilers, I'll just mention that what seems to be his greatest weakness ends up being his strength. And this is what I like, that the plot plays quite well with the details related to sound, frequencies or silence itself. Being its greatest potential the perfect use of silences and sound effects, it is also worth mentioning the way in which the characters interact and help each other while finding ways to protect themselves. But, in the end, what makes this story special is how realistic it can feel to include those heartbreaking moments of loss.

If I already like movies with post-apocalyptic worlds and invading aliens, I like it even more when you add that level of suspense and drama that generates so much tension that it even raises your heart in your throat. This way of mixing several genres in a tragic story that at the same time has many apparently calm and quiet moments is something that I love very much. And there is nothing better than watching a quiet scene where, instead of calm, you feel tension and worry about what is about to happen. This way of playing with your mind and your feelings is fascinating, although tragic at the same time for obvious reasons. But the best part of it all is having a dangerous version of a creature that is frightening and difficult to defeat. A race of aliens that, while we are not told anything in this first installment about their origin, we know they have super sensitive hearing and that makes them very dangerous.

Otro detalle relevante que me gusta mucho es cómo el desperfecto que tiene la hermana mayor afecta su forma de ver el mundo. Prácticamente nos ponen en su papel con momentos completamente en silencio mientras no sabemos cuándo hace ruido y cuándo no. No lejos de poner a un personaje como este en un mundo donde es obligatorio no hacer ningún ruido para poder sobrevivir, lo que es más irónico es el hecho de que su problema de audición sea el origen de la manera de combatir con estas criaturas. Pero, al final, lo que hace especial a esta historia es lo realista que puede llegar a sentirse al incluir esos desgarradores momentos de pérdida.

Si de por sí me gustan las películas con mundos post-apocalípticos y extraterrestres invasores, me gusta más cuando a esto se le añade ese nivel de suspenso y drama que te genera tanta tensión que hasta te sube el corazón a la garganta. Esa forma de mezclar varios géneros en una historia trágica que a su vez posee muchos momentos aparentemente tranquilos y silenciosos es algo que me encanta muchísimo. Y es que no hay nada mejor que ver una escena tranquila donde, en vez de calma, sientes tensión y preocupación por lo que está por suceder. Esta manera de jugar con tu mente y tus sentimientos es fascinante, aunque trágico a la vez por obvias razones. Pero lo mejor de todo esto es tener a una versión peligrosa de una criatura espantosa y difícil de vencer. Una raza de extraterrestres que, si bien no nos dicen nada en esta primera entrega sobre su origen, sabemos que tienen una audición súper sensible y que los hacen muy peligrosos.

Starting with what made it win an Oscar (although these awards now seem to be worthless with the absurd way of valuing and rating films), the sound effects of this film is what stands out the most and has the best to offer. His way of setting the scenes with a silence full of natural and almost unpredictable sounds is something he does very well. And the best part is when, in moments of making noise, the tension completely takes over the viewer and those horrendous creatures appear out of nowhere. The sound they make is something very original as well. And speaking of these creatures, the design they have is fantastic, being a perfect use of computer effects. I also really like the camera style, fixed shots and background focus. The soundtrack, although not abundant in this film, manages to set the mood and generate emotion in those key moments. In short, this is a perfect film for lovers of suspense, post-apocalyptic worlds and silence.

Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in the genre of science fiction, suspense and horror.

Para finalizar, hablemos del lado técnico de esta película. Empezando por lo que la hizo llevarse un Oscar (aunque estos premios ahora parecen no valer nada con la forma tan absurda de valorar y calificar las películas), los efectos de sonido que tiene esta cinta es lo que más se destaca y mejor tiene para ofrecer. Su forma de ambientar los escenarios con un silencio lleno de sonidos naturales y casi impredecibles es algo que hace muy bien. Y lo mejor es cuando, en momentos de hacer ruido, la tensión se apodera por completo del espectador y aparecen esas horrendas criaturas de la nada. El sonido que hacen es algo muy original también. Y hablando de estas criaturas, el diseño que tienen es fantástico, siendo un perfecto uso de los efectos hechos a computadora. También me gusta mucho el estilo de cámaras, planos fijos y enfoques en segundo plano. La banda sonora, si bien no abunda en esta cinta, consigue ambientar y generar emoción en esos momentos claves. En fin, esta es una película perfecta para los amantes del suspenso, los mundos post-apocalípticos y el silencio.

Personalmente, les doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción, suspenso y terror.
