Hello movie fans. Today I want to talk to you about another Disney animated movie that is also one of my favorites, with a very similar style to the previous "Tarzan" movie, combining traditional animation with CGI. For being the first time that Disney brings out an animated project in the science fiction genre, they did it very well, although what I don't agree with is the failure it had at the box office, which doesn't do it justice considering how cult this work ended up becoming nowadays. Produced directly by Walt Disney Animation Studios, this animated feature film is one of the first to move completely away from the typical fantasy films, fairy tales and musicals, which caused it to receive mixed reviews at the time of its release. The film has a great voice cast, including Michael J. Fox, Cree Summer, James Garner, Leonard Nimoy, Don Novello, among others. I invite you to stay and remember one of the best animated works that the great mouse franchise dared to release in its best days.

Plot

The film opens with an incredible event that happened thousands of years before Christ, with a huge tsunami that completely wiped out an entire civilization, the great Atlantis. Or so it was to happen but for their leader, King Kashekim protected his people and his daughter, Princess Kidágakash from the enormous flood, gathering in the "Heart of Atlantis", where there is a powerful blue gem that protected the city. However, the queen is consumed by the crystal to later generate a dome-shaped sphere to cover Atlantis just when it is completely flooded, remaining at the bottom of the ocean during all this time. The millennia pass and between the years 1910 a cartographer and linguist named Milo Thatch presents his project concerning Atlantis to the Council of the Smithsonian Institution Museum in Washington D.C.

The board rejects Milo's proposal to fund an expedition to search for the "Shepherd's Journal", which is an ancient manuscript containing all the information needed to reach Atlantis, the lost empire. While our protagonist is marginalized, a mysterious woman takes him to an eccentric millionaire named Preston B. Whitmore, who in the past was a great friend of his grandfather, Thadeus Thatch. He gives her the famous diary, after financing an expedition to find it and thus return the great favor his friend asked of him before he passed away. Now, his grandson, Milo Thatch with his great knowledge in cartography and linguistics, along with the information on how to get to Atlantis, will be part of another great expedition that Whitmore will finance to visit the lost empire along with a great team of experts.

La película inicia con un increíble acontecimiento que sucedió miles de años antes de Cristo, con un enorme tsunami que arrasó por completo con toda una civilización, la gran Atlántida. This is one of those movies that make you think about how great Disney was at the time when they dared to bring out projects that were far away from the usual fairy and fantasy stories and created incredible stories with a level and style that are incomparable. This film deserves to be remembered as a cult film because of the impact it had on an entire generation, in addition to bringing to the animated screen one of the most popular and iconic stories in the industry, written by the great Jules Verne. Beyond being a simple story with a beautiful soundtrack and funny characters, this film is one of the best you can find in the genre of science fiction and adventure together. A work that brings the best of traditional animation together with the best of CGI and cinema of the time. I can't remember the absurd amount of times I've seen this movie since I was a kid, the way it fills you with emotion and makes you want to watch it from start to finish is something that is very difficult to achieve in many movies nowadays.

Esta es una de esas películas que te hacen pensar en lo grandiosa que era Disney en aquella época cuando se atrevía a sacar proyectos que se alejaban por completo de la temática de las historias de hadas y fantasía de siempre y creaban historias increíbles con un nivel y un estilo que son incomparables. Esta cinta merece ser recordada como una película de culto por lo mucho que impactó en toda una generación, además de traer a la pantalla animada una de las historias más populares e icónicas de la industria, escrita por el gran Julio Verne. Más allá de ser una simple historia con una banda sonora hermosa y con personajes graciosos, esta cinta es de lo mejor que te puedes encontrar en el género de la ciencia ficción y la aventura juntos. Una obra que trae lo mejor de la animación tradicional junto con lo mejor del CGI y del cine de aquel entonces. Milo is one of those protagonists who do not stand out for being strong, famous or very good looking. His intelligence is everything but his reputation and popularity is not the best, being a mockery for the world of science of his time. However, his dreamer's spirit and his research concerning Atlantis takes him far away, getting to know the great lost empire. Along with this, Milo meets Kida, who we could say is the closest thing to a "Disney Princess", being the daughter of the King of Atlantis. This title makes her carry a destiny, a legacy that, like her mother, she has to fulfill, giving her life to protect her people. However, this is not what she wants, since her dream is to know what exists in the outside world, which attracted her to Milo, who comes from that unknown world. But their meeting will not be entirely fortuitous, which makes this movie a roller coaster of emotions. The perfect blend of love, adventure, humor and drama in this film is fantastic.

Empecemos hablando de la historia, la cual fue inspirada por los cuentos de Julio Verne, a su vez que nos muestra por primera vez en este siglo la grandiosa ciudad de Atlántida. Los primeros minutos de la película son suficientes para que te quedes hasta el final, con una demostración impresionante de poder y grandeza, una civilización avanzada que posee un poder incalculable y que por obras del destino fue desterrado del mundo, hundiéndose y quedando en el fondo del océano por milenios. Está historia está repleta de drama, amor y nostalgia al conocer lo que en un pasado fue una de las civilizaciones humanas más antiguas y avanzadas de la historia. El secreto de la vida eterna, el poder, el futuro de la humanidad, todo esto se menciona en esta historia repleta de acción y aventura. Con personajes con los que fácilmente nos podemos identificar, siendo Milo Thatch, el protagonista, uno de ellos.

Milo es de esos protagonistas que no se destacan por ser fuertes, famosos ni de muy buen aspecto. Su inteligencia lo es todo pero su reputación y popularidad no es de lo mejor, siendo una burla para el mundo de la ciencia de su época. Sin embargo, su espíritu de soñador y su investigación referente a Atlántida lo lleva lejos, conociendo el gran imperio perdido. Junto con ello, Milo conoce a Kida, quien podríamos decir que es lo más cercano a una “Princesa de Disney”, al ser esta la hija del Rey de Atlántida. Este título la hace cargar con un destino, un legado que, al igual que su madre, ella tiene que cumplir, entregando su vida para proteger a su pueblo. Sin embargo, esto no es lo que ella quiere, ya que su sueño es conocer lo que existe en el mundo exterior, lo cual la atrajo ante Milo, quien viene de dicho mundo desconocido. The technical work of this film is impressive, being one of the best animated works I have seen in its time, which has the artistic collaboration of the great Mike Mignola (creator of the Hellboy comic book) along with a great computer animation studio, or CGI. The mixture of this with such a fluid and impeccable artistic style made it receive multiple accolades at the time. Even now it remains one of the best animated works Disney owns in the science fiction genre. Its soundtrack, on the other hand, is worthy of being praised and remembered by all due to the great work done by James Newton Howard. All in all, a very well made animated film, with a beautiful story full of action, adventure, drama and comedy; besides having characters of all kinds that you can easily love or hate for a lifetime. A way of painting the great world of Atlantis with a way of seeing the world and today's society, leaving us clear messages and an admiration that deserves this audiovisual wonder that I recommend to see, if you haven't done it yet (and if you have already seen it, then I invite you to see it again).

Personally, I give it a 9.5/10 rating for the genre of science fiction, action, adventure and comedy.

El trabajo a nivel técnico que tiene esta película es impresionante, siendo de las mejores obras animadas que he visto en su época, lo cual cuenta con la colaboración artística del gran Mike Mignola (creador del cómic de Hellboy) junto con un gran estudio de animación a computadora, o CGI. La mezcla de esto con un estilo artístico tan fluido e impecable hizo que recibiera múltiples elogios en su época. Aún ahora sigue siendo una de las mejores obras animadas que Disney posee del género de la ciencia ficción. Su banda sonora, por otro lado, es digna de ser alabada y recordada por todos debido al gran trabajo que realizó James Newton Howard. En fin, una película animada muy bien hecha, con una hermosa historia repleta de acción, aventura, drama y comedia; además de tener personajes de todo tipo que fácilmente puedes amar u odiar por toda la vida. Una forma de pintar el grandioso mundo de Atlantis con una forma de ver el mundo y la sociedad actual, dejándonos mensajes bien claros y una admiración que merece bastante esta maravilla audiovisual que recomiendo ver, si aún no lo has hecho (y si la viste ya, entonces te invito a que lo vuelvas a ver).
