There are very few movies of yesteryear that have fascinated me to see as Back to the Future has managed to do. Moreover, it is one of those movies that I can literally watch every day without ever getting tired of it because of how excellent it is in terms of production, direction, performances, style of humor, drama, fiction and soundtrack. Aside from being a paean to the best era of all - the 80s - this film is a cinematic gem that has managed to hold up very well with the passage of time, being now (40 years later) an unsurpassed classic and perfectly preserved for current and future generations. Its impact and influence both in the world of cinema and in popular culture is so great that there is no one who has not seen it, and if you have not seen it yet it is because you have simply lived under a rock, you are too small or you simply do not have good taste for masterpieces. This is one of those movies you have to see at least once in your life, I assure you.

Como seguramente ya se habrán dado cuenta al principio de este post, si, soy un gran fanático de esta película, más bien de toda su trilogía, la verdad. Hay muy pocas películas de antaño que me han fascinado ver como lo ha logrado hacer Back to the Future. Es más, es de esas películas que literalmente puedo ver todos los días sin cansarme nunca por lo excelente que es en cuanto a producción, dirección, actuaciones, estilo de humor, drama, ficción y banda sonora. Aparte de ser un himno hacia la mejor época de todas -los años 80s-, esta película es una joya cinematográfica que ha logrado mantenerse muy bien con el paso del tiempo, siendo ahora (40 años después) un clásico insuperable y perfectamente conservado para las generaciones actuales y futuras. Starting with the story that this movie tells, I would like to mention how well set the fictional town of Hill Valley, California is for that time in the 80s. Our protagonist, Marty McFly is one of the best sci-fi movie main characters I've ever met. With a life not so pleasant for a young man of his age with dreams and hobbies that are not in line with the beliefs and ideals of his parents, Marty seeks support and companionship, not only with his girlfriend Jennifer Parker with whom he is madly in love, but also with his best and only friend, the "Doc". This doctor, for his part, proves to be an eccentric genius and even a bit of a lunatic (classic "mad genius") who has been working for the past 30 years on an experiment that will completely change both his own life and that of our protagonist. However, the decisions he makes to achieve this will cost him dearly, endangering the lives of both of them. It is here where our nervous and intrepid protagonist manages to flee with the DeLorean and, by ironies of life, travels to the past just to the date when his parents meet.

It is no exaggeration to mention how iconic they are, not only the movie itself, but all the main characters and some secondary characters it has. Both Marty and his best friend "Doc", his girlfriend Jennifer and his parents are such particular and unmistakable characters that many movies and series have tirelessly made references to them. And it is not surprising that this happens since both the actors and the direction of the film have led us to see some excellent performances and developments that have catapulted them to fame and worldwide recognition. Characters like Marty, who is the typical music-loving protagonist and seeks to be rebellious by charting his own path, leaving aside the humiliating legacy he has received from his father George McFly. Throughout the film we see how our protagonist's fate intersects with that of his father George in his youth, 30 years in the past. It is here where his decisions affect the image he has of his father figure, making it evolve while living an unforgettable experience.

This encounter will completely change his life, as well as everyone's in this movie, really. It is here that we realize how excellently developed not only the characters are, but also the relationships they have with each other. The way we see Marty's relationship with his father George evolve from a failed father to his best friend, his reunion with the Doc of the past and influence and even his unpleasant encounters with Biff are some of the most iconic and well done things in this film.

Another thing that fascinates me about this movie is how well distributed the roles are, being the main characters, the iconic mad scientist couple and their young and rebellious sidekick, the real protagonists of the story who would be Marty's parents and the antagonist or villain of the story, Biff, who is the typical bully and school bully who has made life miserable for his father George. Watching this plot evolve, with predictable yet unforgettable plot twists and an unbeatable ending, is one of the most rewarding things about this story. And all of this adds up to a style of humor that, even today -after 40 years- still gives a lot of laughs, to be honest. At least I personally think so, with jokes from various eras and tastes, famous phrases, chases, awkward and ironic moments and recurring jokes with situations that are simply hilarious. Mixing comedy with science fiction is something that has been done several times in the century-long history of the film world, but none has managed to impact more than one generation as much as this great classic did.

Por otro lado, conocemos también a personajes como el “Doc” que, al encontrar su sueño de inventar algo que sí funciona -después de un pequeño accidente-, este logra inventar el viaje en el tiempo. Al lograrlo, su afán por conseguir hacer realidad sus sueños lo llevan a tomar decisiones que lo pondrán en peligro en el presente. Es aquí donde nuestro protagonista viaja por primera vez al pasado, llevándolo a conocer a su mejor amigo, el Doc, en una época en la que era solo un fracasado doctor sin ningún invento que funcione y completamente decepcionado de sí mismo. Y todo esto se suma con un estilo de humor que, aún al día de hoy -luego de 40 años- sigue dando mucha risa, la verdad. Al menos en lo personal opino que es así, con chistes de varias épocas y gustos, frases célebres, persecuciones, momentos incómodos e irónicos y chistes recurrentes con situaciones que simplemente son hilarantes. Mezclar la comedía con la ciencia ficción es algo que se ha hecho varias veces en el siglo de historia que tiene el mundo del cine, pero ninguna ha logrado impactar tanto a más de una generación como lo hizo este gran clásico.

In a time as popular and significant for history as the 80s, we meet a work that teaches us lessons such as the teaching of charting your own path, without being influenced by the traditions or influences of your family or your past generations. Of course, we must not forget the issue of time travel, being this form that we see in the film a theory that has been discussed for all these decades both on the internet and in the same cinema. But no matter how illogical or confusing the travel theme can be, we have to admit that this movie (as well as its sequels) is so well done that it is hard to see any mistakes.

Last but not least, we must talk about the technical aspect of this film. With a budget of a little less than 20 million dollars and a very good use of practical and computer-made visual effects for its time, this film managed to become one of the highest grossing and best rated films of its time. Even today it is still impressive how good this film looks with such visual effects, as well as showing us a very 80s style, with its type of clothing, music and culture. The practical effects work as well as the costumes and make-up are excellent. The same can be said of the filming style we see in the movie, being a Steven Spielberg classic the use of fixed cameras, basic transitions and cameras with panoramic views or with little movement. But the best of all, surely, is both the sound effects that the film has, which are very well done -especially with those used for the DeLorean when they travel in time-; as well as its soundtrack, which is an anthem both for the time and for the Rock genre (Rock N' Roll at the time) and its father, the Blues (who dominated the 50s). In short, this film is a perfect work for every lover of classics, nostalgia and the best of sci-fi cinema.

Personally, I give it a well-deserved 10/10 rating for the sci-fi/comedy genre.

En una época tan popular y significativa para la historia como lo fue los años 80s, conocemos una obra en la que nos enseñan lecciones como la enseñanza de trazar tu propio camino, sin dejarte influenciar por las tradiciones o influencias de tu familia o tus generaciones pasadas. También vemos el significado de la toma de decisiones y las consecuencias que traen en tu vida. Por supuesto, no hay que olvidar el tema de los viajes en el tiempo, siendo esta forma que vemos en la película una teoría que se ha discutido durante todas estas décadas tanto en internet como en el mismo cine. Pero sin importar lo ilógico o confuso que puede llegar a ser el tema de los viajes, hay que admitir que esta película (al igual que sus secuelas) está tan bien hecha que es difícil ver algún error.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hay que hablar del apartado técnico que tiene esta película. Con un presupuesto un poco menor a 20 millones de dólares y un muy buen uso de efectos visuales prácticos y hechos a computadora para su época, esta cinta consiguió convertirse en una de las más taquilleras y mejor valorada de su época. Aún a la fecha de hoy es impactante lo bien que se ve esta cinta con dichos efectos visuales, además de mostrarnos un estilo muy de los 80s, con su tipo de vestimenta, música y cultura. Tanto el trabajo de efectos prácticos como el de vestimenta y maquillajes son excelentes. Lo mismo se puede decir del estilo de grabación que vemos que tiene la película, siendo un clásico de Steven Spielberg el uso de cámaras fijas, transiciones básicas y cámaras con vistas panorámicas o con poco movimiento. Pero lo mejor de todo, seguramente, es tanto los efectos de sonido que tiene la película, que están muy bien hechos -sobre todo con los que se usan para el DeLorean cuando viajan en el tiempo-; como también su banda sonora, que es un himno tanto para la época como para el género del Rock (Rock N’ Roll en su momento) y su padre, el Blues (quien dominó los años 50s). En resumen, esta película es una obra perfecta para todo amante de los clásicos, la nostalgia y lo mejor del cine de ciencia ficción.

Personalmente, le doy una merecida calificación de 10/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción y la comedia.
